No one is arguing that point. We are just laughing at those that said that Monahan wouldn't get a 1st. Be lucky to get a 2nd with retention and probably will just get a 3rd. You know the knowledgeable HF posters.
I figured, even before the Lindholm trade, that the Jets would send back the Habs 2nd and a solid young player like Barron which is arguably a better package than the 1st. I guess I'm one of they few HF members that don't overrate 1st rounders, and don't underrate established middle 6 C's with a bargain contract.

yes, because the ++ fans were asking for were a conditional 3rd if we win the cup lol...

Jets fans believed the Habs would be lucky to get a 1st because Monahan is slow and bad defensively, he will see less pp time and overall toi in Wpg. Also, Wpg doesn't need another player who is often injured nor one that is not a good fit for the system Wpg plays.

Fans arguing about what other fans were asking for in made up trade scenarios.

What a world we live in. So much time wasted arguing over pointlessness.

In a vacuum, the 1st round pick is late and is by no mean a slam dunk. Habs fans were right that Monahan would fetch a first round pick and those saying Winnipeg overpaid are out to lunch. It is a fine trade for both teams. There is no guarantee that this late first round pick will amount to anything, but in the Habs position, it is a gamble worth taking. In Peg's position, having better depth before the playoffs is more important than taking a gamble on a late first round pick that may pay off when their core is old and done.

Everyone should be happy. Why can't we be friends?

A while back I thought Monahan would bring a 2nd with a B prospect, maybe someone drafted in the 3rd or 4th round.

Then his play improved, he didn't get hurt and remained a significant presence. So I started thinking of a conditional 1st.

Then the Lindholm trade happened and I started dreaming that the lack of center rentals left could yield a prospect taken in the 1st and maybe a 2nd round pick. Say the habs pick Jets got in the Dubois trade.

Ultimately, very happy with a firm 1st now, avoiding potential injuries in the last stretch. I think he fits what the Jets are looking for.

Great job to the Jets for snatching him before the very eyes of the other teams, without losing one of their current great prospects in the process. A 1st was fair for everyone.

Maybe he will be the perfect fit for Winnipeg but yes a first seems steep for Sean at this stage of his career.
After the trade^
Before the trade
I honestly don't know if Lindholm is going to get traded and regardless it doesn't really change the value for Monahan which simply isn't that high and since he won't make much of a difference why would a team give up any more or even a second rounder for him is beyond me.

The backtracking is so hilarious.

I agree. I see a lot of posters saying that the Jets overpaid, and that the most they would of given up is a 2nd and a b prospect. The only 2nd the Jets have is Montreals (acquired in PLD trade). It will probably be in the 33rd to 40th range overall. The Jets 1st will most likely be in the 25th to 32nd range. The small difference between the two picks is not a B prospect. In fact its not much of a difference at all. The fact the Jets have what will be a pretty high second is what made giving up a pretty late 1st all the more doable. The Jets did well and the Habs did well. Its a win/win in my books.

If Money survives the remainder of the season and post-season without injury, then i agree - the Jets did well and the cost to acquire him was ok.

The primary is with Money is potential for injury. Relieved he made it in tact to the point of the trade.

and habs fans wanted a 1st + a top prospect...
Nope - only 1 or 2 Habs fans wanted that. They greater majority measured Money's value to a 1st.

Whereas, the entire HFBoards hab-hating universe ridiculed Habs fans for having the audacity of suggesting Money was worth a 1st round pick! LOL

100%. Chest pumping saying I told you so is beta and weak.

Yet it is well deserved given the copious amounts of ridicule Habs fans face for having the audacity of suggesting a 1st for Money.

Re-read the Monahan thread....

The negativity towards Money perculated into the Jets forum. You guys are ridiculous in your takes on Money. Clueless. Listen to Habs fans who watched him all season.

MTL did well on Monahan, but it wasn't free. They paid alot of cash and gave alot of cap space for those picks. This is how the game is played.

In theory maybe, but in reality, he was injured for the most part of last season and his salary was paid by his assurances and he was on LTIR for cap purposes. But for Montreal I guess it didn't matter either way as they're not going anywhere anytime soon and they're filthy rich. No matter how we put it, getting 2 x 1st is quite impressive.
