A very, very late 1st seldom nets a regular NHL'er. This is not a big deal. We can argue as to whether SM is the right guy for the Jets, but given their trade decsions and moves recently, i'll be inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt.

MTL did fine, too. Win, win?

Monahan was worth a 1st. Maybe we can load that 1st with something else to move down in the draft or go after a young player/prospect.

I don’t think this is a bad move for Winnipeg at all. Solid player, low first, cheap contract that they can re-up on… what’s not to like here? It’s a solid depth move for a team that’s trying to win.
Agreed. I get that Jets fans didn't want to give up their 1st, but given it'll be a 25-30 pick the cost wasn't huge. Monahan's a smart player who will make their team better. Win-win.

Is the bottom of first round that bad in this years draft??? Meant as a question not a statement.

Seems like teams in that position in the upcoming draft are quite willing to deal their first. Don't think Winnipeg was the only team considering this type of trade for Monahan.

Teams with late 1sts are almost always willing to move late 1sts, regardless of the perceived value of the draft. Even historically great drafts have more misses than hits in the late 1st round.

The 3rd is if the Jets win the cup this year.

So, unlikely but I wouldn't be upset if they won AND my Habs got an extra pick.
Rather see them lose in the 1st rd. They get to keep their 3rd and that 1st drops down to the early 20's. Win win for both teams.

There you go with the "big warts" again. Are you his doctor? Because unless you're talking warts in the medical sense, that we may not be aware of...you fail to list what this BIG warts are. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more solid all round player than Monahan, including major intangibles like character and leadership. You're damn lucky your team obtained him. Frankly, if we weren't rebuilding, we'd def have no interest in losing him if he'd resign.
How is his defensively this season? I am trying to figure out how he will look like with Ehlers and Perfetti, which it sounds like he is starting. I need him to be at least solid defensively to play on this line.

Its not really about the 1st, its more about the team and fans didn't get the guy all of us wanted for our big push. Currently factoring in % of points won IIRC the Jets are 3rd in the NHL even having sat out their 1C for a while now and multi other injuries, still 3rd OA. In that situation its disappointing get a plan B guy, not your plan A guy. Cost isn't huge as you say, but the 1st isn't the main part IMO, its the disappointment of not getting our plan A, not to mention Monahan's significant injury risk.

Do I hate the trade? No

Do I love the trade? No

Do the Jets pay a bit more then I would of paid? Yes, but not much more, I said 2nd was my max.

Is the trade a bit disappointing? Yes, not bc of the 1st, but bc we didn't get who we wanted. Lindholm is the better player and we wanted to resign him as a longer term solution, can't see the Jets resigning Monahan with his injury history so its purely a rental only which isn't ideal. If it wasn't for his injury history might be more appealing to resign him & more interesting trade for me. Fingers crossed Monahan doesn't get injured and I hope the Jets use the rest of the cap space to get 1-2 more trades done.

I think the pick will be used in a trade for a young player.

Some of you are professional goalposts movers.

For what it's worth, Monahan was healthy through most of his career, minus a couple of seasons. He's looked strong this entire season; no reason he can't keep it up for the remainder and through the playoffs.

He's not Lindholm, but he's a very good leader, which is especially valuable in the playoffs. He might surprise you.

Good work for Montreal all the way around in trading for and then trading Monahan.

Thought they would get their 2nd back from Winnipeg. If Montreal "tanks" and the Jets say end up in the 27-28 range that difference won't be that much between those 2 picks.
I thought Montreal would get a 2nd and a middling prospect they did slightly better than that.

What does that even mean? The guy hasn’t missed a game this year and he is healthy.

Which one
What I mean is that while he provides good offence and transition, he has lost a step defensively and unless he has another gear he hasn’t been using, has missed several defensive assignments causing in GA

He's been very good defensively. Maybe his role changed with us vs CGY, but he was usually PK1 and 5v5 could usually be found as deepest forward down low in our end. And his elite IQ made him good at blocking passing lanes over 200ft. Add to all that, he's awesome in the dot. You won't be disappointed.
