Taints my perception of Chevy a bit. Always thought of him as a shrewd negotiator that clutches onto 1st rounders like they were pearls but it almost looked like he panicked a bit after the Lindholm trade.
Habs fans should rightly feel vindicated.

I stated in my other post, max I wanted to pay was Habs 2nd (while stating Lindholm was my 1st choice), so the Jets 1st is a bit more then I wanted to pay (but not huge difference, depending where the Jets & Habs finish this year). Having said that, how I view this trade (outside if he can stay healthy) is more so how Chevy uses our cap space now. If Monahan is our only TDL trade, that would be hugely disappointing, a big part of Monahan's value is his tiny cap hit so Chevy better use the rest of our cap space otherwise big part of Monahan trade was pointless. IMO
Trying to explain away being wrong??

Well Habs fans... I'm eating hypothetical crow. I hope he's as good as you all hyped him up to be

He has 35 points in 49 games. Our leading scorer has 42 points, second is 39 and Monahan was third on our team in scoring. He will be fine.

Agreed. I was ok with Sean with Habs 2nd, but I was hoping for a bigger fish using our 1st+. This is a touch more than what Jets fans wanted but also a touch less than what Habs fans expected, so that pretty well is the definition of a fair trade.
The reality is that the difference between the Jets 1st vs Habs 2nd isn’t much and should get closer after the deadline when Montreal moves more out. Especially with the drop of quality after pick 20 or so.
I’m still hoping that Chevy pulls out a blockbuster surprise for a big RD, someone with team control. Ryan Pulock, come on down lol

I expect Hughes to use that pick as a trade asset at the draft.
Yup, I think some of the guys considered in other deals, for players like Barron, might end up being available for a 1st.

Heck, Winnipeg's first and PIT's 2nd next year would be similar in value to what we paid for Newhook. Who out there is similar to Newhook a year ago ?

If Monahan doesn't get injured, a late first is a cheap price for Monahan. He's a second line center (on pace for 60pts), plays two ways, is big, skates well, master at face offs and is a real leader. He's exactly what team should trade for for a cup run.
We know. They'll find out in due time exactly HOW WRONG their ridiculous takes were. A 1st was the minimum market value for him. And especially in light of the Lindholm trade (Monahan has been better than him this year), a 1st + a 3rd is a fair trade. Mony will be a difference maker in WPG. He's a helluva player and a great teammate.

You have to give them credit for getting a 1st, no matter how low the pick might be in the round. I certainly never would’ve paid the price, but the Jets are a team with the perfect set-up to pay that price, and had to be very concerned what they’ll look like (up the middle) in a 7 game series, against these teams in the West.

Edmonton, Vancouver, Kings and the Knights specifically, all have what they need up the middle. With that being the case, the Jets couldn’t allow the season they’ve had to go to waste, without rewarding their players and fans, by trying to compete in that gauntlet. So good on them for rewarding their players.

Still tough to think there’s been any shift of power in the West though, as Vegas, if healthy, is still too deep on the blue line, and have a lineup of forwards who wear opponents down.

If one of those teams lands Hanifin or Larsson, then it’s game-on. Until then, second best thing they can do, is be deep down the middle. Lindholm for example, is a very strategic player for the Canucks now, as he’ll take certain face offs in the d-zone, etc, etc. He’ll help the Canucks D-Core not to be worn down as quickly in a 7 game series, with possession numbers.

Still find it tough to see anyone beating Vegas in a playoff series, as things stand. They can literally avoid the extended play (in their own zone) 20 minutes a night more, than any team in the West, with Theodore and Pietrangelo carrying play like they’re capable of, and they haven’t made a move yet.

Watch Vegas land Hanifin, or someone like him.. It would solidify against injury, and take him away from anyone else acquiring him. Making it even tougher to carry play against them.

It’s a good move for the Jets. Whether they overpaid or not, that’ll be up for debate later. It’s a great message to their players from management though.

Great asset management by our GM

For those flummoxed by the return now vs 1 years ago, I think you forget that Monahan was 6.3M at rhe time and had been dealing with a bit of injuries and underperformances.

Habs took a flyer on him twice now - they traded for him, the signed him despite being injured most of the year.

His actual performances over the past 74 games aren't bad - 52 pts on a trash team. Only 2M, great attitude guy apparently. Still at risk of injuries.

I am surprised that theres no confition on the first, but I guess not many teams had veteran Cs available?
