I'd much rather use the money paid to Giroux and add $4M or so and upgrade him with someone younger and faster. Though I guess with the difficulties we have in signing free agents maybe that's not a realistic idea.

That's really dumb. This team has a core in place - #1 power forward, #1 D, #1 C, lots of depth down the middle, #1 goalie and a future stud in net. You can fill the roster around those players without needing a top notch prospect pool. When this team is healthy it looks like a contender.
When the team is healthy, we're clearly a playoff team, but nowhere near a contender.

I mean even with Giroux's contract we can still get an Ehlers type of free agent with the cap space assuming Ehlers signs.

Hamonic isn't even a #7 anymore. Especially not on a playoff team.

I wouldn't call a #7 a true NHL D. It's someone who if the wind blows the wrong way could end up n waivers. But a #7 D still has trade value in the right circumstance, usually that is that a team has injuries and doesn't have anybody in their system to cover because expansion has watered down the kind of talent depth each team has at D.

There is a reason Brannstrom got 28 games earlier in the year with Vancouver, it's because there isn't depth around the league to

You also have to consider that Hamonic is right handed, and the depth around the league is even worse on the right side. A team will possibly give up a late pick for a veteran RHD who is a known quantity, is somewhat physical, and can kill penalties.

Coaches also seem to have a bias to known quantities on D. A coach can play a fringe NHL winger for 6-8 minutes a game and it probably won't have any effect on things, but a 6th D is going to have to play at minimum 15 minutes a night to not shorthand the team. Ideally, a bit more.

We can’t. I crunched the numbers quickly just re-signing Giroux, Kleven, and Matinpalo, and using Merilainen as the backup and we’d basically have room for nothing. Maybe they can add a 2 mil dollar player. The Sens want a cushion so you have to assume their cap is basically 91-92 million.

Basically someone needs to be moved if there are to be any real changes this off-season.

How much money are the other 3 making? Even if all of them had a caphit of at least 2 mill, we don't even hit 90 mill, and let's be honest, none of them have the leverage to go anywhere near that high. Would not surprise me if they all come below 1 mill each. Maybe an Ehlers is too rich, but we definitely have the space for a $6mill cap hit forward.

I had them at 1.5 and 1.2, no idea what they’d actually make.

Then you need 13F, 7D. I got to 89 million, which again, leaves almost no room if you factor in that they don’t want to spend to the cap. If we assume they want a 3-5 million cushion, they can’t spend anything more than 92, and could go as little as 90.

Someone probably has a spreadsheet breakdown somewhere that’s more accurate.

When the team is healthy, we're clearly a playoff team, but nowhere near a contender.

Think the Tampa and Florida games made that abundantly clear.

It's possible we get there within the next 3 seasons, but we're definitely not there yet, which is why Staios needs to keep his powder dry and not make any expensive short-term acquisitions at the deadline.

Prospect pool needs replenishing, if for no other reason than we need expendable young pieces as trade ammo to potentially push this team into legit contending status in coming years, if all goes well.

Um assuming Giroux is 4.5, that's around 20 for the top line. The 3rd line isn't near 13.9, it's not even 10, and all have guaranteed contracts next season.

The draft picks in the next 3 drafts will not likely improve our team significantly during the next 3 seasons. If the objective is to try to make this team a true SC contender now, then better players need to be added now. Trading future draft picks is one way of acquiring better players now. Yes, it's a tradeoff of improving the team now (next 3 years: 2025-26 to 2027-28) versus in the future (2028-29 and beyond).

4.5M for Giroux is fair. I hope that’s the deal.

I will say though that we need to do a better job of managing his minutes. He’s currently our top forward in PK ice time, and that’s a lot to ask of a 37 year old.

I know the value he brings in the faceoff dot and how that helps shorthanded, but I’d rather keep him fresh for offensive situations.

Im Not sure this is how it works or else the big teams would just sign all stars for 1 million and MASSIVE bonus’s.

There would be like 3 super teams and everyone else would be shit
Nope. Bonuses cause Salary Cap issues in future seasons! They only circumvent the Cap for the current season but have to be added to the Salaries paid for the next season.

It's not really dumb; a GM should always be considering what his player assets are worth now and what he might be able to get in a trade. I don't know what other teams such as NYR and the Panthers or L.A. or Vegas might be willing to pay for Tkachuk, but it could be significant and maybe an "over-payment". BUT I would not ever go public with the private trade discussions if I were the GM or owner.

$4.5M for Giroux who would play on the 1st or 2nd line? OK. But if he is on the 3rd our 4th line, that would be too much.

I would dump Perron and his $4M contract plus Forberg to UFA to gain another $1.75 ($2.75M- $1M replacement) plus Cap Ceiling increase dollars if I could to gain $8M Cap Space to help sign a top 6 F at $8M.

It's a poor craftsman that blames his tools... ah crap...

Draft Day Trade

:sens
  • Jack Hughes (5 years, 8M)
  • Luke Hughes (RFA, likely in line for 5M-8M on a long term extension)

:devils
  • Brady Tkachuk (3 years, 8.2M, NMC in July 2025)
  • Josh Norris (5 years, 8M)

Context:
  1. Sens make the playoffs and do alright, but don't go on a deep or substantial run.
  2. Tkachuk hasn't asked out, and the Senators aren't explicitly shopping him, but there is some blood in the water and they feel a bit uneasy about the power that a member of the Tkachuk family having a NMC could grant them.
  3. Tom Fitzgerald sniffs out the situation because he is an avid follower of Brady's wife's Instagram, and one too many "no where like home" memes lead him to believe that Keith Tkachuk may have put her up to convincing Brady to ask for a trade. It's a full press family effort. Matthew Tkachuk even liked the posts.
  4. Fitzgerald calls up Steve Staios. He knows the Senators aren't shopping Tkachuk, and aren't in a position to trade him without a real big name superstar coming back. With the falling Canadian dollar, he seduces Steve with spreadsheets showing the front loaded nature of Hughes contract. Hughes has less salary than Tkachuk, more term, and most of all he has almost no trade protection.
  5. The final addition is that the Devils will take the Norris contract and send the Senators Luke Hughes. The Devils have tremendous depth on defense, and they need to make room for a bigger role for Simon Nemec. Luke is in line for a big money extension, which makes the trade close to cap in/cap out.
