You can't really ignore age and contract status here, as that will greatly affect which player is a better fit for a particular hockey club.

This is the first season I've seen Matthews struggle with his release and he has clearly been playing through some type of injury through various parts of the season. But he won the Rocket, Hart, and Lindsay just last year. He's still over a PPG while playing respectable hockey defensively. Stutzle is a great player, but this is his first year producing at that type of clip.

Yep slightly ahead of Matthew’s at that age. Stutzle just turned 21 , 2 months ago.

I voted yes but could change depending how big his next contract is. I like Matthews but I dunno if Id trade Stutzle for him if Matthews is going to cost 15m
but 8x12-13m Id have to think long and hard

I wish I could change my vote to I dont know

I don't think it's so much about the player as much as it's about the contract, especially the upcoming one.

Outside of McDavid and perhaps a few goalies, why would anyone take a player on a 1 year deal over a player with 7 years of control at a fair cap hit.

Just doesn't make sense. Maybe McDavid wins this poll because he could legitimately win you a Cup, but I take Stutzle over every expiring contract out there.

In a vacuum, I think Matthews is the better player. Factor in the age difference, contracts, and the cloud of where Matthews may go after this deal, and I think I'd keep Stutzle if I had him.

How anyone is saying no is absurd. Matthews is a close generational talent. Stutzle is nice, but hes no Matthews.

Matthews is the better player overall right now, but i think Stutzle will be in the same conversation by the time he is Matthews' age. Biggest difference here is one is signed for the next 8 years as a highway-robbery price of $8.35M - Matthews makes $11.6 next year with a full NMC kicking in on July 1 (so no guarantees you get anything in return for him if he doesn't want to stay), and will be looking for over $13M next summer. Even if Matthews is still clearly the better player in 2-3 years, he won't be good enough to justify the $4-5M extra per year. He would have to put up at least 15-20 more goals to make it close.

This year is clearly an off year for Matthews, I have him as a consistent 45-60 goal scorer, with 40-55 assists (85 points in a down year, 115 points in a great year).

Tim is probably going to be 35-50 goals, with like 45-60 assists. So also a point per game guy in a down year, but a lower ceiling with the goals.

The answer is Timmy.

In a vaccum you can say this, sure. But once you factor in age and contract, it's a real debate and I take the younger, slightly less good player who will cost 2/3rds or even less than what Matthews costs.

Think about this - in 24-25 the Sens will have a 1C in Stutzle and and 1D in Chcyhrun for a total cap hit that will be less than Matthews' cap hit. What would you take? Stutzle+Chych or Matthews?

I mean Matthews with term is a way better player. But Stutzle has the control. I'd take the 5 years of control for Stutzle over the 1 year of control with Matthew. If Matthews had equal term it's not even a conversation.

Matthews. Chychrun is not a 1D.

So you think he's not a Top 32 defenceman in the NHL? That's questionable IMO. Watch him play one full game and you'll likely change your mind.

You can argue the injury history/availability isn't ideal, but his on-ice play is certainly Top 32 in the league when he's healthy and he's just hitting his prime at 24.

I don't know. He has spelt it every way but correctly in the past.

This being my favorite

Methot is apart of the clown show along with Anthony Stewart, Sid Sexeiro, Jack Edwards, Craig Button etc. Probably the dumbest ex-pro I have ever seen

Everyone who posts here has seen him play. Being in the West I'm sure I've seen him more than you. He'd be our #4 in Calgary ahead of Z and Weegar, behind Andersson, Tanev and Hanifin. Maybe even behind Weegar.

Sometimes we lose sight of how much better the top 3-5 players in the league are relative to even the remainign stars.

Stutzle is unbelievable, but if Matthews is under contract - its him. Hes better offensively and scores more goals, and hes lightyears ahead defensively.

That's the only reason there's a serious poll. He isn't under contract.

Would you take one season of Connor McDavid over eight seasons of Tim Stutzle?

No, you wouldn't.

It doesn't say anything about how good or bad McDavid is, just the reality of the financial situation.
