No one knows what his new contract will be, and he is only 25 and not like he is old... This thread is saying I will take the average first liner and 4M in cap space over a player who has been collecting trophies since his rookie season.

This also, like most people here, ignores the complete game Matthews brings and his size. Like I said, this is HFboards where the 21 year old might become Matthews and the in the prime Matthews is chopped liver. This is going to be a thread that is bumped over the next few years like when people did the same things with Pettersson, Barzal, Laine, and many others.

Of course. Providing the Sens knew AM was extending with them. Is the summer the Leafs either extend AM or risk losing him as a UFA in July 2024?

I chose Stutzle. Nothing against Matthews and no way I’d make my decision based on a down season from Matthews, I just prefer my 1C to be a playmaker or a hybrid as opposed to a goal scoring center. I think it makes for a better team make-up.

I find that hard to believe. He signed his extension mid season, any talk of an offersheet was premature at that point.

Matthews holds all the cards on his next contract. He managed a 5 year deal at 11M AAV with next to no leverage, you’re kidding yourself if you think it’s a marginal raise as a pending UFA.

Which is why the Sens would only trade Stutzle for AM if they knew AM was going to extend with them. I think AM wants to test the free agent market July 1, 2024. He signed a deal that took him to free agency. So no way the Sens would make that trade.

He's watched the cap limit the potential of the roster and is already rich. I don't think he is going to take the Leafs to the cleaners like HF fantasizes about

What has become very apparent, and quite frankly a surprise to me as a Sens fan, we've probably reached a point where we can start legitimately comparing the two players.

I think prior to this season we'd all have a laugh. Now Stu routinely looks like the best player on the ice.

Nothing more needed than to review the year AM34 had last year . We know for a fact Matthews is the MvP and rocket winner ...what did Tim do last year ? How many rockets and mvps does he have? In a mcdavid era how many players right now have a legit shot at a mvp or a rocket besides AM34? Maybe one or two for the rocket...Thompson and DP from Boston...thats it...common sense rules

MacKinnon said he was going to take less again and now he will make 100k more than McDavid starting next season.
If Leafs fans really believe that Matthews will take less than Nate, they are IMO delusional. He will be the highest paid player in the league once his next contract starts. By how much will depend on his priorities and on the team he will be playing for when he gets that contract.

Matthews got that monster contract hoping he would be this good and Dubas crumbled. Now that Matthews has proof you are expecting him to not use that to get a significant raise?

Matthews is about Matthews. That Hart Trophy is his Stanley Cup and his Salary is his respect. He's going to be the highest paid player. Possibly also the highest ch%.
