I'm starting to think Huberdeaus 115pt season was a fluke. He goes from 61pts the season before, to 115pts the next, then back to 64pts the year after.
The 61 point season was the 55 game covid year. The 115 pt season was an outlier, but he was well over a ppg player the previous 3 seasons and I'm sure the Flames were expecting that guy.

Calgary is facing paying the full freight of Huberdeau's Franchise-crushing Mega contract for years to come.

Would any team take Huberdeau's contract @ 50% retained or would the Flames still have to add a sweetener?

What would it take to move him besides a miracle?

Anthony Mantha for Huberdeau @50%!!! Book it 5,4,3,2,1

Just thinking outside the box, but I wonder if you could ever get Johnny Gaudreau back for Huberdeau? Johnny Hockey doesn’t seem to be taking to Columbus this year either.

Would a team take him? Almost certainly. he's struggled these past 2 seasons but I think the idea of potentially getting Huberdeau back to his Panthers form and having him at a huge discount would be too enticing for teams to pass up on. Would the Flames ever retain 5+ mil for the next 7 years? Absolutely not, isn't even worth talking about.

People thinking Florida would take him when Zito trying to re-sign Forsling, Montour, and Reinhart are out to lunch. Not only do we not have room, I’m pretty sure he’s not wanted back here. By management at least. His recent player wouldn’t have anyone rushing to get him at all.

Huberdeau to the Oilers at full cap hit for Campbell and Kane.

Oilers get a winger that would fit with McDavid or Draisaitl. The long term contract won't matter in a few years if the Oilers don't win a cup.

Calgary gets 2 short term contracts with nothing retained. Maybe if there a bigger deal to be done we include a goalie in there and add something else

Columbus would take Huberdeau, probably, but Johnny wouldn't approve going back the other direction. He came east and back to the US for a reason, even if Columbus wasn't his first choice.

So the oilers trade a winger making 5.25 mil for the next 2 years that's producing 0.81 pts/game with their current team for a winger that makes 10.5 mil for the next 7 years and producing 0.67 pts/game just to dump Campbell giving up zero cap space...that's a bold strategy

Not that they can get rid of him anyway but they should just keep him. He clearly hates being there, and they have to rebuild anyway, so why not torture him by forcing him to either stay or retire. Poor guy can sulk in his pile of money.

Not a fan of either team, but just looking at season stats, would a trade like Huberdeau + for Gaudreau be a possibility? Gaudreau obviously had his best years in Calgary, gives Huberdeau a fresh start. The plus for the Flames would be to make the difference in salary and term.
Gaudreau's wife isn't going to let him go back to Calgary

Whenever somebody on this forum says something like “every team in the league”, it’s pretty much guaranteed not to be true.

Unless someone is getting healthy scratched or waived there probably isn't many players in the league that all teams wouldn't take at 50%.

Vlasic and Reaves maybe and I'm sure a few people would take Reaves

You don't think Huberdeau points jump playing with McDavid or Draisaitl? Might as well trade them now if they can't make their winger better

Yeah, Huberdeau would do well in Edmonton. McDavid and Draisaitl create space and he makes some passes to set them up. Huberdeau set Lindholm up for about 5 tap ins against the Leafs and he fanned on them on all

History would tell you that Calgary does not do large retentions on contracts. It’s likely an ownership thing and I really can’t blame Edwards on this one. If the GM screws up then they should live with their own mistakes (unless they’ve already abandoned ship, in which case the new GM has to live with the old GM’s screwups).

Edit: In the past decade, the only time the Flames retained salary that I can see was on the trade of David Rittich, who didn’t have a large cap hit and also had an expiring contract. So yeah, pretty much no way Huberdeau gets dealt.

Though, living with their own mistakes may mean not being competitive for the full life of Huerdeau's contract.

Can a Fan base wait 8 years for ownership to make what amounts to a business decision?

They’re not going to be competitive with or without Huberdeau, so what does it matter? If they get a bunch of high picks and become competitive in 4-5 years, Huberdeau’s salary doesn’t really matter a ton, especially if the cap goes up.

If they get to a point where they desperately need the cap room, then sure maybe they bite the bullet and retain. But there’s absolutely no reason to do it now. They might as well enjoy the tank and pile up some prospects.
