World cup is better than Olympics

This tourney is awesome but at the same time crippled. The level of hockey is incredible and amount of fans from all over the world is the most positive surprise for me so far.On the downside USA and Canada couldnt pick all players they want while others were allowed to... ??? I dont mind if some neutral fans are entertained, this should not happen. Slovak fans chanting Slovakia while team Czech Republic is under heavy preassure of Hossa-Kopitar- Zucarello line. Funny and entertaining for somebody, for me not. Only made me looking forward more to real match between CZ and SK because this is not valid guys....

Both canada and the states have enough players to take the loss of not taking their kids. Doubt canada would of taken anyone this year and usa just made stupid picks to play torts hockey.

Usa has the depth tho they just send college players to the whc so lots of euros probably don't know how good usa players are but they sent a team to beat on canada.

This can not happen in Olympics. You choose players without any limitation or speculation which of them you need or not....

No it's not it's maybe a threat. If they wanted to replace the Olympics it would be exactly the same. If the IOC pays they will go if they don't they will change this to just national teams

This best on best is better then the Olympics in excitement but not presitige. I don't think there is any doubt to that. Sochi had maybe 3 good games where you were on edge of your seat. Yesterdays game between Russia and NA was probably at worst maybe behind 2 games in Sochi.

But in matter of prestige, this world cup doesn't even come close in being compared to winning an Olympic gold. We can all agree upon that.

So with that being said, if you don't want to watch the world cup, no problemo, Dont

It didn't work already otherwise the world cup would of kept going when the nhl let it's players go to the Olympics. They need to be different the gimmick teams do that and keep the Olympics important.

They've never tried to establish the World Cup as a format. Sorry but holding the tournament at random intervals of 8 and 12 years, and holding one right before the lockout isn't trying. The gimmick have nothing to do with keeping the Olympics important as the NHL has no incentive to keep the Olympics important.

Not in the same realm as the Olympics (which are hundreds if not thousands of years old). Yeah...they're corrupt and weird ....but making up your own 8/12 year/posturing tourney just because it was a good idea during the cold war doesn't really do much for me.

It's always a debate but when it's been payed for the nhl has stopped it's season and let it's players go every year. This time the IOC doesn't wanna pay and the world cup is back? Pretty sure they will go if the IOC pays this is just saying hey we can do it too and take away your biggest winter event.

300,000 people watch the USA/Europe game in the states. That's less than an average regular season game on NBC. Canada-USA pre tournament was about 700k in Canada, which is about what an average Leaf game draws.

Yeah most leaf games only compete against basketball not football.

Weird time for hockey for a lot of people. And yes Olympics will always be higher because you can't find a channel that isn't showing the Olympics unless you want to watch cartoons.

The NHL began presenting this tournament as a replacement for NHL participation in the Olympics over one year before the IOC issue emerged. If the NHL does continue going to the Olympics, this meaningless tournament becomes far more palatable though.

And if the IOC doesn't pay blame them. The nhl has no reason to pay to have their players go get injured and stop their season.
