GDT: WJC, Jan 2 QF, Cesko vs Canada, 8:30 EST

I think this Canadian team was competitive vs. anyone, but didn’t dominate games the way some Canadian teams do. Like it would be reasonably 50/50 against any of the top nations, and when that’s the case, you need to win three 50/50-ish elimination games in a row. They didn’t even win one, but even if they’d made it past the Czechs, it would’ve been tough sledding. One of the weaker recent Canadian teams IMO.

Oh well, cheering for Sweden now!

Pretty hard to cheer for a team that started in 1996 with the sole purpose to win international tournaments.

Get rid of the USNTDP and pick a team from the USHL, NCAA and other junior leagues and see what happens?
Without the NTDP, the USHL eventually gets better with more US teams winning Cups and more kids in other markets starting to play hockey at competitive levels. But you have a point, no NTDP means more MN & MA/New England kids stay home to play HS/HS-Prep, more MI kids going to the O. The NTDP does strengthen talent level and competition level significantly for the top NCAA route US guys.

Congrats to the Czechs, did enough to deserve the win.

Canada was better for the majority of the game, but not by enough to make the result particularly egregious. Not enough intensity, too much lackadaisical play. This was a tournament where things never really got going - and the team would have been in tough even if they had. Not impressed with how the team was coached in that the team in general seemed content with mediocre play and was not forceful enough in trying different things. Rousseau wasn't the main problem but he also wasn't near good enough to justify how the coaches just gave him the net, too many forwards seemed content to float around looking for the nicest pass, and the defencemen just weren't that good.

Ultimately it is a failed tournament, which is not acceptable. Hopefully Hockey Canada finds lessons to be learned (take the full 25 player allotment for one) and the team is better prepared for next year

Celebrini is only 17.
It's a 19 yr old tournament .

I love the USNTDP, wish we could do that in Canada. But business is business.
Hopefully other countries will do it but they won't get the funding from the NHL like USAhockey does.

What cups are you talking about? The SC, which hasn't been won by a Canadian team in 30+ years??

Good for the Czechs. Did really well to hold off Canada who dominated the last 30 minutes. Of course Canada shot themselves in the foot by missing so many opportunities but Czechs should get a lot of credit for that.

Feel like coaching was a significant part of the problem for Canada. Didn’t utilize players playing well enough and let shifts go far too long for players that aren’t clicking. Why are your lines that aren’t producing anything going back for a third zone entry when they’ve already been on the ice for what feels like two minutes?

I'm saying that every time a US team wins the Cup, especially in less traditional markets, more kids in that market start playing hockey and some of them play at higher levels of minor hockey and make it further.

Be careful what you wish for where the USNTDP is concerned. I think it's played a role in some of the U.S. success at the junior level, but overall, it's underperformed (IMO) given all of the resources that goes to it. It's very political, suffers from questionable leadership, and doesn't really generate much support for senior level tournament participation.

Definitely I agree with you. It's one of the reasons I'd like to see QC back in the NHL. and a second team in southern Ontario.

True and it's for a full year pre-draft, not just a particular tournament participation.
