I recall an instance when Tie Domi took it upon himself to sucker punch Ulf Samuelsson right in the beak; I have never heard a cheer so loud across Canada.

Was it excusable? No.

Was there a secret side of me that grinned with pleasure watching the man that ended the career of a hero like Cam Neely fall to the ice like a rag doll? You bet.

Jack Johnson's role on Team USA is a little different from Tie Domi's. That is why nobody on either side is smiling.

In regards to the hockey game:

I'm really upset with Jack Johnson. I like the physicality, but that was clearly not necessary, and the type of play that this great game can do without.

If I were a Canadian, I'd be proud of my team. They got the Americans to play right into their hands. I don't buy the "Even game" thing - I think this was a Canadian victory both on the ice and on the scoreboard. Not a blowout, but a victory. Team USA needs to learn from this loss and move forward.

I still think Phil Kessell's future position in the NHL is on the wing. Rob Schremp should definitely be on the wing if he makes the Oil next year (which I suspect he will.)

I'm not sure about this, but Sutter seems incredibly vindictive in regards to dishing out ice time to his players; I'd be playing with one eye on the bench if I were on that team, paranoid of making a mistake.

Since the tie did the USA no good, going for the win makes sense. It was a bit bizarre seeing a goalie pulled that early though...

Cogliano and Schremp will make a great combo for the Oilers in the future; they have much different games, but the two should compliment each other very well.

This thread:

Of course, as usual, there are the morons coming out in full force.

A few people on this board make me laugh...Turning a spirited game into a nationalistic pissing match.

Some of you should be ASHAMED of yourselves. Get the American/Canadian flags out of your butts and put your thumbs back to their usual positions. :shakehead

Agreed.

I just wanted to show that it really IS all about perspective.

I wouldn't be surprised either if a couple of Spitfires aren't shrugging and saying, "Oh well . . ."

Nationalism is stupid. No need to get all worked up about some sports fans chanting USA sucks, or whatever. It's pretty tame compared to soccer fans.

I remember hearing the Canadian anthem booed (in NY, I think). My reaction: Big deal. Bunch of drunk hicks. I was at an Expos game where they booed the Canadian anthem. My thoughts: young lemmings following the crowd and doing what's popular at the time to appear "cool". These don't upset me even though I'm a proud Canadian.

I guess that I'm secure in my belief that Canada is a great place to live that if Americans or Quebecers boo the anthem I just feel those individuals don't know how good we have it up here. And I know that doesn't represent the entire population of the US.

My advice to any Amerks who were offended: don't take it personally. They don't represent all Canadians. And they are in BC where the economy was hurt by the USA's illegal softwood tariffs, so they're a little bit upset with your gov't right now. No big deal.

1. People need to get over the booing and 'US sucks' chants. It's a frigging rivalry. I hope to God some of you aren't so sensitive in the real world. It's one thing if fans came in burning American flags and carrying around the corpses of dead presidents, but it was harmless chants.

2. I missed the Johnson elbow, but what's done is done. The tournament officials will handle it, thankfully nobody was seriously injured (as far as I know). No need to crap yourself over it. It's not an international incident.
1. :biglaugh: No kidding. If they really are, alot of people here must get beat up during recess.

2. Hopeufully Downie is ok

the only missed call imo, was towards the very end when it looked like a boarding call against a US Def defenseman - don't know who

Ryan Parent SHOULD have got a cross check, definetly. But again, the reffing was overall solid.

Regarding JJ, he might miss some time, he might not, either way he's an amazing defenseman that will hopefully learn to control his temper a little better, and hopefully Downie is okay.

I honestly admit I hate some Americans, most of them people like you, but most of Canadians including myself don't hate the US or most Americans. And plus when the fans say "USA Sucks" I know they mean the team, although the few booing the US anthem are a classless bunch who don't deserve to be Canadian fans.

Exactly. When the fans chanted "USA sucks" they were directing it at the team, but when they booed the American national anthem they were booing the country which is completely different.

Great game by Canada! They played physical and kept some of America's top players off their game. Bobby Ryan definitley didn't look like Bobby Ryan, and the duo of Parent and Staal really did a great job against the ever so dangerous Phil Kessel. The next game these two play against each other will be even better. Canada vs. USA for the gold medal...again, most likely with the same outcome

I've always hated the booing of a nation's national anthem. Any nation.

I didn't think the game was well officiated at all. If you want to say consistent, then yeah. The officials were extremely consistent tonight on there calls which is all you can hope for of a game of this stature. For me, this was the first game I was able to watch of the tournament, and I have to say.....if this is how these teams have played all tournament long....NO WONDER THEY ARE TAKING PENALTIES. Charging, slashing, hooking, obstruction....this went on all night. Canada was extremely undisciplined....and the US wasn't far behind. To be honest, it was like watching the old NHL all over again. Did I enjoy the game? Heck yeah! Did the officiating bother me? Not really. However, some of you need to realize that what your advocating is the return to the old system of NHL hockey....Letting the players play means - letting the un-skilled players hang on the skilled forward through center ice, riding the player without the puck into the boards, hooking and holding people all over the ice when you get beat even when you do not have the puck. Did we see that tonight? We sure did. Things like this were going on a lot. Again, I'm glad they toned down the penalties a bit, and the game was exciting/officiating was consistent. However, if things were called to the letter of the law....even to the tune of the way NHL officials are calling things....this game has a lot more specialty time being exhibited.

/end rant

Man I hope there is a rematch. :)

I agree with you, the game was just not very pretty, sort of old NHL clutch and grab hockey. If canadians really love such style of the game then what can I say...

Happy early new Year everyone. It was a great game minus the elbow. Here's to a rematch in the finals or semis? Hopefully minus the elbows and booing of the anthem. All the rest...well....there are more important things in life than bickering(guilty as charged).

Oh I concur, the elbow was incredibly terrible. I saw tiny horns poking out of JJ's helmet, flames in his eyes and he was foaming at the mouth at the point of contact between his elbow and Downie's Jaw.

Guy got his elbow up to send a message.

Fin.

That wasn't your run of the mill 2 minute elbow. That was a clear intent to injure and when it's reviewed you can bet there will be a several game suspension for it.
One of the dirtiest shots I've seen in a long time.
