Just like to re-state that if the situations were reversed (i.e. Canada needs a win not a tie) and the US is about to get the empty netter, I'm not surprised if Downie throws a 'bow like that.

He's not exactly known for diplomacy on the ice.

I hate Downie. He's a puke in my opinion and it bugs me that he is playing for this team. He's good enough, but his antics are embarrassing. He stole a Russian player's stick and stepped on it to break the blade during the exhibition game. That's the kind of punk he is, but that doesn't make it ok to try to take his head off..

I'm surprised at a lot of people.

If I'm a fan of the 'Canes, his display of nastiness makes me feel even better of the 3rd overall pick. Classless or not, it adds to his already overflowing portfolio of skating, hitting, shooting, and smarts.

Smarts is the last thing that should come to mind when seeing a play like that, especially considering that he could miss games for it.

Thanks for re-stating, but it still doesn't make what JJ did okay.

I'm not saying it's okay by any stretch of the imagination, but if Downie's name is Darcy Tucker and I'm an Isles fan, I'm snickering for the rest of the night.

Really, it's all about perspective.

Kessel sucked.

Ryan played like the biggest *****, considering he is supposed to be a powerforward?

Oshie was the best American forward easily.

It's not classless. Do people have this problem when Edmonton fans make their Calgary SUCKS chant? Where the heck did this classless crap come from all of a sudden? It's a team rivarly and this game has been hyped up in Vancouver for four months now. It's been happening in the NHL and international hockey forever. It's just a chant and far less a "wrong" than viciously elbowing a guy in the jaw.
Exactly. I don't think they're trying to make anti-semetic remarks, they're booing a team. You said it nicely, its just like Edmonton chanting Calgary sucks... and I have no problem with it. Heck, I've been to almost every single Flames game in Edmonton (I live in Edmonton) and understand it. Rush5Collapse ect, buy a clue. Your taking it way too personally.

Yes.

Let's compare the World Championships of his age group, an international tournament he will be able to play in what...2-3 times(?).. to an NHL game.

Shall we?

So why are you ignoring JJ's tap on Downie which was also unnecessary as Chipchura was already gone and there was no way Downie would get a pass from him?

It's a shame that posters are once again ruining this game...as always, it's the usual suspects from both countries. Fortunately, those knowledgeable posters know who the clowns are and no one takes them seriously.

Anyway...the game. As an American fan...I'm disgusted with Johnson...mostly because of his importance to the team and what he'll do to team USA if he's suspended. I don't know if Downie said something or what...given his history...it's possible, but either way, self-restraint has to come into play. As I mentioned earlier, I thought that the game was much more evenly played than some(SOME) fans are making it out to be. This "so overrated" talk is ridiculous. If USA is overrated...after losing a game on a desperation situation in which the goalie was pulled...then what does it make Canada...having to beat them that way? I'm not trying to start anything...but some of you are talking a big talk for a game that came down to the last minute and a half. You're ignoring an exciting, physical, end-to-end game...for genital-waving. Some of you from other countries that are here to stir the pot...what gives? A Finnish poster laughing at the loss...as if his team wasn't facing the remote possibility of relegation? That's a little silly.

Anyway, off the soapbox. Kudos to both teams for a hard played game, and even t hough the Americans lost, I'm amped as a Preds fan to see how dominant Ryan Parent really is. Take a minute to reflect on things outside the competition...like a blueline consisting of Suter, Weber, Hamhuis, Klein, Laakso and Parent ;)

In regards to the hockey game:

I'm really upset with Jack Johnson. I like the physicality, but that was clearly not necessary, and the type of play that this great game can do without.

If I were a Canadian, I'd be proud of my team. They got the Americans to play right into their hands. I don't buy the "Even game" thing - I think this was a Canadian victory both on the ice and on the scoreboard. Not a blowout, but a victory. Team USA needs to learn from this loss and move forward.

I still think Phil Kessell's future position in the NHL is on the wing. Rob Schremp should definitely be on the wing if he makes the Oil next year (which I suspect he will.)

I'm not sure about this, but Sutter seems incredibly vindictive in regards to dishing out ice time to his players; I'd be playing with one eye on the bench if I were on that team, paranoid of making a mistake.

Since the tie did the USA no good, going for the win makes sense. It was a bit bizarre seeing a goalie pulled that early though...

Cogliano and Schremp will make a great combo for the Oilers in the future; they have much different games, but the two should compliment each other very well.

This thread:

Of course, as usual, there are the morons coming out in full force.

A few people on this board make me laugh...Turning a spirited game into a nationalistic pissing match.

Some of you should be ASHAMED of yourselves. Get the American/Canadian flags out of your butts and put your thumbs back to their usual positions. :shakehead

Who said I'm ignoring it?

Are you hearing voices??

Fact of the matter is, if Downie wouldnt have touched JJ entering the offensive zone, JJ probably wouldnt have even realized he was there.

No, Le Goalie no crying here I've been watching the Blues all year so losing games in crappy ways is pretty much no big deal. Good luck in the Finals and I know you will be rooting for the USA since we are now the underdogs.

The nastiness is good, but it takes away a bit from his smarts. This could very well cost his team a chance to win the tournament (assuming he faces a suspension).

I'm an American, and that wasn't just an elbow. There is a big difference between a 2 minute minor for elbowing and an intent to injure that has nothing to do with the play.

I'm in the same boat. Maybe I sympathize because Downie is a Flyers prospect, but anyone who wants to blame Downie for Jack Johnson throwing a cheap shot on him is profoundly absurd

Player tha treally inpresses me, Ryan Parent. Lucky Nashville, every game, he just impresses me more and more. He's the team's best blueliner, the best defender for Canada in the past 8 years outside of Dion Phaneuf and will be a absolute rock for Nashville (all IMO). If there is one player I want on my team on this Canadian squad, it has to be Ryan Parent without a doubt. He's what, 19? He plays like a 30-year NHL vet.
He reminds me a lot of Adam Foote.
You just can't beat him one on one.
Very savvy defensive player.

Smarts wasn't the right word really; I was trying to sum up "defensive intelligence and positioning" into one word for poetic license, and I couldn't find another word.

I'm also really effin' lazy.

jesus, enough with 'elbowgate'...
when the hell is my boy guillaume the tenderness
going to get a shift?
sutter seems to dislike him.

Downey is not a smart player. I have no idea why he would want to provoke his opponents like that. I think he is a cheap shot artist and got what he deserved, he probably dove too. In any case if Canada will demand JJ to be punished then IIHF should also take a look at the fight in the game Nor-Can. Kulemin had 2 game suspension for the same thing, I do not understand how canadians managed to not get the suspensions.

Wow, this was a brutual play especially when the game was totally over. If you never seen it keep your opinion to yourself. This was an intent to injury, he should be kicked out of the WJC.

And what's yelling on a message board gonna do? All it does is decrease the quality of discussion and has no impact on the decision the iihf will make.

So go ahead and yell about it all you want, won't change a thing.

Ryan has a power forward body, but I don't think that's his mindset.

You hit on an important point, though: Ryan will have to be physical at the next level if he wants to succeed.

There's no doubt he will be suspended. If he isn't I question the integrity of the IIHF.

And while it wasn't called a match penalty...doesn't mean the IIHF doesn't have that in their heads. 2 games minimum.

R you his agent or something? I cant believe you are saying that about Parent... he has been average this tourney at best

Oh I concur, the elbow was incredibly terrible. I saw tiny horns poking out of JJ's helmet, flames in his eyes and he was foaming at the mouth at the point of contact between his elbow and Downie's Jaw.

Guy got his elbow up to send a message.
Message Sent.
