They have only 4 cases.
I mean, if the IIHF was thinking of cancelling the tournament with a grand total of 4 positives on 3 different teams, why the hell didn't they come up with a more robust protocol?

Systemic gross incompetence or something more malicious. There is not really any other explanation.

There's likely more to the story that we don't know about yet. If there's an Omicron case, it won't end at 4 cases.

Well aware of it, but in a populist / demagogue environment, the quality of arguments doesn't out-weight the amount of people sharing the same opinion. If some States decide to restrict event attendances, then I bet the league will shut down. Too many games to reschedule. Best case, they take a pause and they start back with a reduced calendar.

There's 0 chance the States will reduce event attendances, they barely did it when no one was vaccinated and the virus was worse.

Canada is the only issue here and it's because the government is afraid of anything right now, despite any evidence to the contrary. They haven't evolved their way of thinking in line with the science on Omicron.

There's such a thing on this planet?

For sure, tons of freedom in Sealand. Not much room for a rink, though:

They have 3 weeks of scheduling availability from canceled Olympics. There is next to zero chance that the NHL season gets canceled. Unlike the WJC, the NHL has time on its side. North America just needs to weather the Omicron storm through January.

If its over 4 cases, the plug should have been pulled prior to the tourny as that magic number is impossibly low in the current state

Now if they have more knowledge that the case count likely explodes as things havent been reported yet, then i get it.

We will see. On the info we know now, there was no point attempting the tourny

Not sure what you mean. The players were in Alberta when the IIHF canceled January tournaments. The Spengler Cup also got canceled a few days ago because the host team had an outbreak. NHL games got suspended for a week and most aren't being played.

Just because you're upset about the WJC situation (I am too), we can't abandon health guidelines.

I'm talking about the NFL, NBA, Premier League, NHL too. They're not shutting it down when 1 person on the team has a case, it's when there are multiple cases. Isolate the one that tested positive, and move on with the game. That's the policy for nearly every league. They shouldn't even had tried to run the tourney with the current rules, their odds of a successful tournament are <10%.

If I live with someone, they test positive, and I test negative, I don't have to isolate too. those are the rules.

This sucks big time for the players and everyone involved, for us too but to a lesser extent of course. IIHF and hockey Canada only have themselves to blame for this disaster of a tournament and how badly the covid situation has been handled from the start. Everything would have been fine had they chosen to follow last year's formula instead of being greedy clowns with that public hotel BS.

Don’t make plans. Don’t get excited for anything but maybe NFL and just go to work if possible and stay home. Basically all you can do or are told to do now. The stats show that although more positives with Omicron, much less hospitalizations and deaths. Once Omicron passes they’ll say some other Digitron variant is coming and it’ll keep going

Positive cases shouldn’t be an issue. Players and staff and everyone is in attendance and is vaccinated. There is little to no risk to any of them. We don’t listen to *that* side of the science though.

Also how terribly planned was this? No bubble? No taxi squad of players in the event of positive cases?

I mean, come on. This was predictable. Absolutely bush league planning and execution. Just like our government.

All NHL games in the US got canceled last week. The Spengler Cup got canceled. All IIHF tournaments got canceled for January. Many other NHL games are canceled every day. Nobody's holding you against your will to stay in Canada...LOL

Reallllly curious to see what the #'s look like if/when they are made public.

I'm not going to judge/jury this because the last 2+ years have demonstrated that pursuit is simply a losing proposition. But 4/250...will be difficult to justify.
