WJC 20/21 should be cancelled

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. Alberta closes all indoor rinks until January 13, I assume WJC is still a go, but no announcement yet, that I’ve heard.

There should be no testing of the players. They are all healthy 18-20 year old 1% athletes. There’s no reason to think they are at any risk. I’d rather not further ruin this tournament for a few health bureaucrats to be satisfied that they ruined what would’ve ended up being the most satisfying hockey experience of many of these kids careers. Undoubtedly more will get added to the list without good reason.

Perhaps Sweden should have done a better job quarantining their players before now?
There shove been a protocol for all teams to test and then go into quarantine for 10 days then having another test before boarding a flight to Canada .
I don't think the IIHF has done a very good job of making sure this tournament will happen.
He'll the IIHF president has covid , that's all you need to know.
This tournament is really important for these young players and fans .

The guy who said that is full of shit

Hows this taste?

You need a reality check. Its a hockey tournament and if a country doesn't think its safe for the team to travel then its their prerogative.

”Då överväger vi om deltagande är möjligt”

" If we see that the trend is going in the wrong direction, we must consider whether participation is possible or not, says Johan Stark, Secretary General of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association"

Yeah I dunno..

I was so excited for some hockey, but all integrity will be lost without the actual best players playing.

Why not postpone it? Have the tournament in May or something?

Has there ever really been a year of this tournament with the actual best players all playing? Maybe 2005 I guess

All integrity lost is a huge exaggeration, in a regular year Lafreniere, Hughes, Dach, Seider and possibly Stuetzle wouldnt be playing in this tournament. If anything, this tournament being in an off year might have actually added some talent to the rosters

Got up and checked to see if there was any BAD news. None so far - no news is good news. Nice to see.

As Bob McKenzie said (paraphrasing), "This will change, day to day, hour to hour", so I don't want to be too happy.

2013 had best on best and... 1997(?) - can't remember.

Another player from Germany tested positive as did Swedens goalie coach.

Strangely, the closest the tournament has ever been to having all available healthy players participating was 2006. Even though there was no lockout, Crosby was the only player who wasn't available. During the 1995, 2005, 2013 lockouts there were still two players not there due to the NHL in each year.

During the reign of the Covid-19 virus over humanity, the status quo today is almost totally irrelevant in judging how things will be 10 days into the future. Before vaccines finally restore some sense of normal, gatherings of people are going to be continuously scuttled over the short term. Much bigger events than the WJC have already been abandoned (the Olympics, World Cup, etc.). They have no choice but to evaluate the status of infections just a day or two before the teams are required to enter the bubble. Once the bubble is sealed, any existing infections will spread rapidly. At that point, they will have to be very confident that they have a foolproof plan to handle it, because if they don't, they could have a big disaster to deal with!

Yeah I was gonna say 2013 but honestly that was a fairly weak year even if fullish rosters were there. 2005 had so much high end talent that would be somewhat similar to this year if guys like Hughes and Lafreniere were going. 2013 had some first overall picks but they were Yakupov and RNH which in hindsight is the weakest and one of the other weakest first overalls in a decade.

Missing guys like Hughes, Lafreniere and Seider is more common for the world juniors than not for sure
