WJC 20/21 should be cancelled

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
Canada has 41 players ready for the tournament - 46 minus the 5 who are going home. Find 5 to replace those 5 and start a quarantine NOW. Bring those 5 in for "Canada 2" 14 days from now if a country (Sweden) bows out.

Apparently Sweden has publicly said they may withdraw. If that happens I assume the cards will fall and tournament will be cancelled...
I googled "sweden may withdraw from the world juniors" and nothing came up.

Not that Sweden would care, but I think it would reflect really poorly on Sweden if they didn't send a team. Why ruin it for everyone else because you didn't quarantine early enough?

If I was God for a day, I'd tell Sweden, "If you don't send a team this year, don't bother sending a team next year".

My guess is that they’re still in at this point, but if another bunch of positive tests happen then they may really pull the trigger on withdrawing.

Maybe we need to take a page out of the World Cup book and make a Young Guns team. Just 17 year olds!

We have a ton of depth so use it. No use cancelling the tournament because one team backs out. I would love a "Canada 2" - more games to root for.

You need a reality check. Its a hockey tournament and if a country doesn't think its safe for the team to travel then its their prerogative.

”Då överväger vi om deltagande är möjligt”

" If we see that the trend is going in the wrong direction, we must consider whether participation is possible or not, says Johan Stark, Secretary General of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association"

How do you do that? If it’s all the players who couldn’t crack the Canada squad they’ll get eaten alive. If you divide the good players equally neither will win.

They clearly won’t get eaten alive. Definitely not a medal favourite, but they’ll be competitive.

The cut players wouldn’t lose to the best of fins, americans, Swedes? Unless you divide squad fairly then competitive but definitely not favourites.

Not sure they would lose ALL of those games, and the ones they do are likely to be quite close. Don’t forget both Finland and Sweden are now facing a reduced level of talent themselves.

It would definitely be interesting as all the players would have chips on their shoulders from being cut. Also the other teams would try harder because it would be more embarrassing to lose to the B team.

Keep Canada 1 intact and add a second team with players who didn't make Team 1. I'm sure they'd do fine. If not, they'll have played for Canada at the WJR's and that is amazing on its own.

Sweden already lost one superstar and our 1st center due to covid19. More players are going to test positive. Teams might not even dress a full team when tournament start.

At this point just cancel the tournament. The hockey wont be played on even premises.
If your logic was employed in the NHL, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Steven Stamkos would be enjoying their second place finish in the Stanley Cup Finals.

I'll take your word for it.

I swear there are some posters actually rooting for the WJR's NOT to happen.

I think most people, first and foremost, are rooting for safety.

At the end of the day the WJC is a 12 day showcase. That's it. It's not the Cup Playoffs or an entire season. The hockey world will move on with or without it.

With Covid soaring in Alberta is it worth the risk at this point? I'm not sure anymore.

Alberta is out of control and teams are beginning to get lit up
It’s not happening
If you’re referring to the tournament as not happening, you are neglecting to take into consideration the political aspects of this. Alberta was actually wooing people to hold events in their province. There’s prestige on the line and money to be made, albeit not through ticket sales, unfortunately. They’ve already run a bubble that was successful at keeping out Covid so I’m pretty sure they are confident they can make this work.

Does that mean you're rooting against it?

I feel like the Czechs are covid proof. We could lose our 10 best players and the result should be about the same!
