WJC 20/21 should be cancelled

Sweden already lost one superstar and our 1st center due to covid19. More players are going to test positive. Teams might not even dress a full team when tournament start.

At this point just cancel the tournament. The hockey wont be played on even premises.

Seen you posting doom and gloom on a few threads now. FYI no one is forcing you to watch this tournament. Stop.

I definitely felt that the biggest challenge was getting into the bubble. If Covid does somehow get into the bubble in a meaningful way then you have to worry about the tournament getting nixed, but these few isolated individual cases tend to get blown out of proportion and shouldn’t cause any serious threat to the tournament.
^ This. The NHL had a successful bubble, but had plenty of cases before hand (no one seems to remember this now).

My question what Sweden has done differently than other countries? I mean there was supposed to be a friendly matches between Sweden and Finland but it got cancelled because Swedish team had players infected with covid.. And now they have players again sick with the disease.
All Finland can do is follow the protocols and, if Sweden doesn't. they stay home.

I dont think months is realistic no. Never said this either. They knew the timeline of this and bringing the players into camp when it is so close that any positive rules them out is nuts to me. Start it 2 weeks earlier or something but there should have been a contingency for the obvious positive cases that were going to happen.
Exactly. Too many countries cutting it too short and putting the tournament at risk.

True. Even Tampa had a mess on their hands. Still, I think teams should have set aside more time.

We’ll see as soon as players like Dach dominate this tournament at a rate higher than other countries stars. Guess what players of his ilk would not be available if nhl was on. Players like Byram who will most likely be top D in tourney would not be available if nhl was on.

For Canada, no excuses for failure to win Gold this year, assuming the tournament is held. There will be no NHL for U20 players to be called up to, and it will be home cooking on the steppes of Alberta.

Apparently Sweden has publicly said they may withdraw. If that happens I assume the cards will fall and tournament will be cancelled...

Man, a lot of my excitement has been killed with all the players who won't be coming. Here's a list of all the players expected/hoped would attend who will not be in Edmonton:

Not an elite player by any means, but Slovak Samuel Krajc is out. He has a head injury, which apparently is part of the reason Cajkovic got kicked out.

Honestly, I don't think there ever is. Silver medals aren't typically seen as a success here. But this year is definitely an unusual one. It sounds like we just had to send 5 players home, so who knows how that will shake down.

Is that list any different than what it usually is? There are always players who miss due to injuries, not wanting to go, or not being released.

I think it didn't have to be such a lengthy list, but I'm not sure the quality of the hockey will be so reduced due to the players missing. It might be reduced for other reasons.

Nice try. European players are actually playing.

I have to admit my enthusiasm has been somewhat dampened by this. Not too long ago we were looking at a potential full best on best, but that notion has sadly gone done in flames. Nevertheless, once we get going I’m sure we’ll see hockey that’s as awesome as ever!

Unlike the Olympics, where teams go head to head with their highest caliber players, these age specific tournaments have always been about showcasing a nation’s depth. Some of the teams that have taken a heavy roster hit will have the opportunity to prove how much depth of talent they have. I wish those teams the best of luck!

Canada actually sitting pretty for the moment. Laf was never going to come in a different year. They might be as strong as any other normal year. I highly suspect this won't stay intact/the same by the time the tournament starts on Christmas.

Germany also missing Seider (ouch, that's a lot of lost depth for a developing hockey nation) and Austria missing Nickl.

According to TSN Germany is missing Nino Kinder and Kristian Reichel because of Covid

At this point, it's slightly larger than usual but nothing earth shattering. Reichel is probably the best player/highest profile missing of those who weren't in any doubt to play if it weren't for Covid.

Yeah I dunno..

I was so excited for some hockey, but all integrity will be lost without the actual best players playing.

Why not postpone it? Have the tournament in May or something?
I've posted this elsewhere and it got some traction, but I am firm against postponing it. Play or cancel. This tournament cannot be separated from Christmas.

Not me. I just want some Christmas hockey.
