Yup.

How was thing not figured out BEFORE everyone got on the plane?
I guess the abacus wasn't working properly.

Every time I THINK Hockey Canada doesn't know what they are doing, I look around the world and see we are truly the Gold Standard.
Yikes.

Because it's true.

I knew someone would take exception to me saying Canada is the Gold Standard.
"gold standard"
I understand that the situation right now is difficult world-wide, but I think it's a pretty shitty thing to imply that we need to make coronavirus response a competition. Especially when this involves the largest global health crisis in our lifetime. I'm going to call you out on your BS and point out that when you look at hard numbers you'll realize Canada has one of the highest mortality rates for COVID-19, and that the actual "gold-standard" would be Japan or Korea.
Do us a favor and get off your high horse.

One more...

Good Lord. I was talking about Hockey Canada - who, despite their faults, seems to get Hockey right far more than any other nation.

Without knowing the precise logistics, I’m imagining that it’s more like they showed up with too much luggage not knowing better and the air crew told them it was too much, not that they were able to taxi all the way to the runway, try to take off, and fail.

I can't believe posters are taking exception to me saying Hockey Canada is the Gold Standard. A poster could say the sun will rise tomorrow and some posters would take exception to it.

I'm sure that's true.

Um...... 1 of those things is an objective scientific fact.

The other is a vague, arbitrary opinion.

You're right...

That why, when the IIHF / NHL wants hockey done right (like during a pandemic or during a special event (World Cup) or when another country says they can't hold an event), they go to countries other than Canada.

Anyways, no matter how tempting, I am NOT going to argue this silliness.

I am off to walk on this beautiful day.

For the Swedish/Finnish/Russian flight the teams were told that they must have all the players' equipment inside the cabin (which apparently is illegal). All three teams refused to board he plane under such circumstances and demanded that the IIHF brought in a second plane to take the equipment (which they did).

With as much weight as hockey equipment for three international hockey teams is, it was probably a weight balance issue which could throw off the aerodynamics of the plane.

Wise move, i don't think you could dig your hole any deeper.

The main issue was that the Polish charter plane the organizers arranged was too small. Finnish GM had been saying this to the organizers for TWO MONTHS. IIHF vice secretary Kalervo Kummola commented that he should have talked to him, it would've been sorted out ages ago. They tried to switch to a Finnair plane which would've been large enough for everyone, before getting the cargo plane for the equipment. You just know that plane is going to be late, leading to cancellation of the pre-tournament exhibition games.

I hear that Sweden lost a superstar. I vote to cancel the tournament, and besides if Sweden loses a game in the group stage there must be an asterisk so the streak will still continue!

Part of me wants to see the alternate universe where Finland lost a superstar and Sweden lost no one and how Star Ocean would react to this thread from a Finland fan.

Team Sweden won the legendary 2012 WJC without superstar Landeskog and superstar Larsson so no excuses Finland!!!

Have we gotten into the plane tracking section of the schedule yet? :sarcasm:

Yes, yes we have

The Swiss/German plane has left Iceland, Czech/Slovak/Austrian plane just landing in Iceland. American plane leaving from Detroit for Edmonton around 5 ET.

I know this is weird, but I work in the industry so I've use these flight tracking apps daily for work so it's easy to find.

Well Hockey Canada are the ones responsible for this collosal mess, according to the Finnish team's GM.

What are they even doing chartering narrow-body aircraft for a Transatlantic journey that requires two refueling stops?

Suomen matkasta MM-kisoihin tulossa farssi! Tavarat ja ihmiset eivät mahdu lentokoneeseen – ”Olisiko syytä miettiä, missä säästetään?”

According to this link, Finland went to Hockey Canada two months ago saying that the planes they planned to charter for this would be unsuitable given that they wanted to stick three full teams on a single 737-800.

I was quite surprised to see 737's when I went looking. You almost never see 737's going across the ocean. Doesn't make sense at all. With 45 people in each party the seating for 3 teams does work even with a few rows of space between, but considering they're going across the ocean and for covid safety any wide body would get it done in 1 leg and have more spacing between the teams and even players from the same team. Nobody wants a middle seat for a 3 leg journey from Europe to Edmonton.

Edit: The probably could have reasonably stuck 4 teams on a widebody and only needed 2 charters. The spacing would have still likely been better than 3 teams on a 737 pending which widebody they chose. I get they're expensive but that would have helped mitigate some costs. Germany goes with the Finland/Russia/Sweden group. Swiss go with the Austria/Czech/Slovak group
