The thing about McKenzie is that he is on perhaps the most dominant line in the WHL with Cody Glass and Kieffer Bellows, both 1st round draft picks. How well will he perform when he is on his own? Is he another Petan, or will he thrive in the pro leagues?
Heponiemi-Gawdin-Steenbergen wants to have a couple of words with you.

It is more than fair to be concerned about Glass' impact on his production, but that's a much better problem to have than if he didn't produce. He'll get his contract, and if his play plummets in the pros, too bad.

Petan wasn't a product of linemates though. He was usually the most productive player on his line.

I haven't seen much this year, but I was surprised by how little Glass contributed to McKenzie's scoring last year. He no doubt helped with zone time, but McKenzie did a lot of damage with his shot.

Petan's game may not be translating as hoped, but at the junior level he was dominant on his own merit.

The thing about McKenzie is that even if that is the case that he's being carried, he was a 7th round pick, so not much lost there. Something to note though is that he's outperforming Kiefer Bellows, who was a 1st round pick in the same year that McKenzie went undrafted. He's performing very well regardless of his linemates.

Another quick note is that performing well along talented players is a skill in itself.

McKenzie and Bellows are both LW's. Are you sure they are on the same line? If so which one plays off side?

FWIW McKenzie is scoring slightly ahead of Bellows who is from the same draft class, although Bellows is still 5 months younger.

I think McKenzie is a very different style of player than Petan. The accepted wisdom is that small players need to make up for it with speed. Petan doesn't, McKenzie does.

I'll see Portland in person in two weeks.

It does appear Sniper is lining up on RW though

I'll look forward to the report. McKenzie could turn into a late round homerun, like Gaudreau. Still more likely not at this point but the potential is there.

Apart from being small, they don't have much in common. Tanev with hopefully more offensive skill is a better comparison in my mind.

I just had deja vu to when I said Tanev was "Wright with hopefully more offensive skill".

Well, in size he is closer to Gaudreau than to Tanev. My point wasn't that he is the same style player as Gaudreau it was that both were passed over because of small size. I really don't know anything about McKenzie other than stats and that he is fast. I think that Gaudreau is closer to Petan in the speed department but Gaudreau is much quicker, which may be more important than pure speed. Gaudreau has the reflexes of a cat.

I'm referring to how Petan dominated in Junior hockey, but has had limited success in the NHL.

Petan never had much for pure scoring ability and speed. Obviously he scored a lot but skilled players tend to do that in junior. He is a great stickhandler and passer but McKenzie has better hands IMO and scoring ability. He was passed over because he didn't score much in his draft year if I recall. I also think McKenzie is a better skater overall.

I'd agree on the speed part of your first sentence but Petan did put up 46 goals to go along with 74 assists in his draft year.

Obviously he's turned into more of a straight playmaker since but he's definitely shown the ability to score.

His draft year was his high water mark for goal scoring though. .23 in D-1, .65 in D+0, .55 in D+1, .28 in D+2.

Loving how Vesalainen is playing. I don't think his FEL stats will amaze anyone this season, but he plays in a low scoring team, and hasn't got the biggest minutes yet. WJC might be a big coming out party for him. If Finland does well he might have a shot at repeating his u18 MVP performance. Tolvanen will make it a very tough task but I have seen bigger miracles

Agree. He's had a very strong D+1 season. I'm looking forward to seeing him in the WJC.

How many Jets prospects might we see in the WJC?

Vesalainen
Stanley?
Berdin?
Samberg??
Others?

McKenzie maybe? I don't think Samberg has any chance to make it this year, so somewhere between 1-4 Jets prospects. I'll guess Vesalainen and Berdin make it, Stanley and McKenzie don't. Too bad Germany isn't playing since Gawanke would have probably made that team
