Atlanta wasn't spending a lot on scouting - TNSE nearly doubled the size of their scouting ops over the first year or so.

The Thrashers were also left hanging by trading away all but 4 picks in the 2007 draft in their push to be a playoff contender. To compare to today's Jets, it would be like gutting the 2013 draft, which produced Morrissey, Copp, Poolman, Petan, and Comrie.

And where the Jets have been fortunate in a lot of drafts, the Thrashers didn't seem to have much luck.

Luck is what you make it in the draft, right? Sure, you need a good amount of luck for a depth pick to pan out, but there should be identifiable markings of an NHL player even when they're 17 and 18. If it were that easy though, we'd have more successful teams hanging around. I guess the important takeaway is spend money on your scouts so you get a better bead on who to take. I mean, how likely would we have found Connor Hellebuyck without having someone at that specific Jackalopes game in his draft year?

Every time I look at our 2015 draft class my pants get tighter....

It's gonna go a long way to mitigating any losses the Jets roster takes in the next year or 2 due to cap constraints.

at least 7 guys who will play pro hockey and likely at least 4 that will be NHLers.

Basically, Chevy's done his job and the pressure is now on Maurice to get this team into the playoffs and on a run.

Chevy has not been perfect - but who is? He's put together a strong roster and still has some strength left in the pipeline. Has any GM done a better job over the last 5 years?

Sometimes some of the things he does, or does not can make me a little crazy  but the bigger picture says he is among the top GM's in the game.

The one real question mark I have with him is the coaching staff. That is his responsibility too. The jury is still out on that one. Maurice makes me crazy a lot more often than Chevy does but he is getting results. Right now even the things I'm most certain he is doing wrong are working - well, except for 1. If PMo and his staff can keep on getting results it will be the last brick in Chevy's wall. In the final analysis, you have to go with results.

O'Dell is playing pretty well in the KHL. Saw him in an international game a couple of weeks ago. He looked very good. If the KHL doesn't boycott the Olympics we might see him there.

If he was a Russian FA we would probably be seeing speculation about which team was going to achieve the coup of signing him.

Still don't know what it is that NHL coaches didn't like about him but apparently they all agreed.

I recall seeing something about how the chance of a player panning out from rounds 3-7 is basically random. It's a total crap shoot.
Helly was drafted after St.Croix watched him once I think
You happen to accidentally catch a guy once playing goal in 2nd tier US Junior and you take a flyer on him and he turns out to be a NHL starter? Luck incarnate...

a family friend of the Lemieux's here. How has Brendan looked and how would you project his potential?

I think he has a bright future as a possible 3rd or 4th line player. If he keeps working hard like he’s doing and keeps improving on different aspects of his game, I think he’ll be a great addition to the team.
Personally, one of my favourite prospects. We’re pulling for him!

Pronman on Seuss

Winnipeg Jets: Scouts have been noticeably flocking to Minnesota State games to watch top college free agent Daniel Brickley. Quietly, they are also watching C.J. Seuss, drafted by the Jets in 2014 (his name was then C.J. Franklin, which he since has changed) who also could become a free agent in August. Suess leads Minnesota State in scoring and is an intriguing hard-working two-way center.

With Suess, are we looking at the situation where the Jets might have to offer him a contract this spring so it gets him a signing bonus, burns a year, etc, etc, so that he doesn't go to UFA and sign with another team?

Yep, Connor, Roslovik, Harkins, Foley, Spacek, Appleton, Niku, Gennaro. What a haul. Looks like at least 4 make the NHL, possibly 6

Providence College is in Ireland this week, both their games on Friday and Saturday will be on TSN. Friday game is on TSN2 and TSN Go and Saturday game is just on TSN Go.

Possibly 7. None of the remaining Jets prospects is playing himself out of the picture. In fact Gennaro is still not impossible. He is having another good season in the WHL, although as an overager, you might hope for a little more yet. But the season is young.

Which is my point. If you don't have the scouts around, then how will you get a bead on young, up-and-coming talent? Luck matters in drafting, but making educated guesses helps to mitigate the reliance on luck. >_>
But no team has demonstrated any actual skill at selecting players after round 2 over the long term. They might as well be picking names out of a hat...

Detroit had a nice little run of hitting on guys in later round. Something I found interesting about them though is they only have 1 player drafted since 2014 that is an NHL regular in Larkin.

Yup. That's why it's so important to nail your first round picks. It looks like the Jets have been very good at that, with the exception of Stanley.

2G1A for McKenzie tonight.
The thing about McKenzie is that he is on perhaps the most dominant line in the WHL with Cody Glass and Kieffer Bellows, both 1st round draft picks. How well will he perform when he is on his own? Is he another Petan, or will he thrive in the pro leagues?
