Player Discussion: Winnipeg Jets Defense

Demelo needs to be in the top 4 but that still leaves us one short, as bort and pool have to move down. So who is the 4th, it's that guy our stunned GM was supposed to acquire at the tdl. Collin Miller would have done or any number of other available second tier guys. This is all Chevy.
Miller would not have helped...have you watched him play this year?
People are bitching about DD and want Miller? What a fackin joke.

DeMelo hasn't been good lately, but it's hard to assess when he's paired with Benn. The main problem with this D is Poolman and Forbort in the top 6. Forbort is barely replacement level at this point, and Poolman makes so many mistakes and dumb plays. An example with Poolman is when he took the puck down the R boards vs Edmonton with McDavid on the ice, and decided to take a shot from around the goal line. No threat to score, and basically a turnover after he put himself out of position deep in the zone. Sure enough, McDavid takes it the other way, forcing Morrissey to make a difficult defensive play. It's a complete lack of awareness of game situation, and Morrissey is constantly cleaning up for him.

Poolman doesn’t come across as the sharpest knife in the drawer, very little improvement in his game since he first arrived, his regular go to play is bank it off the boards to no one in particular, Stanley at least could regularly hit guys with passes out of the D zone!

And for a big guy Poolman is barely physical to the point of looking scared to hit anyone, big Stanley doesn’t seem to have that same inclination!

Niku has had his chance. And given his chance and TOI, he's performed like one of the worst NHL dmen. Yes I'd prefer the other two. Let's stop playing shit dmen, and put in actual good ones.

Ya I'm with you, let's see what we got in some of these rookies. Should've done that to start the year

If you don't think Miller is a better option than bort or pool than you are just as guilty as Maurice and Chevy

lots of players better than those two guys you mentioned but I wouldn't be giving up draft picks for Miller especially since he is signed for a year past this season thank you very much.

Demelo having a revolving door of partners most of the year hasn’t done him any favours imo.

I really think a lot of the trouble with the Jets' D is systemic. Beaulieu's been gone for a month and the team hasn't really been much better since then.

It's weird because Beaulieu's on-ice WOWY's are awful...so you'd think getting him off the ice altogether would help more. But I guess when you just plug Tucker Poolman in there, it doesn't move the needle much. Morrissey-Poolman is about as bad as Beaulieu-Morrissey was.

As @mennoknight427 has been pointing out on Twitter recently, Maurice/Huddy seem very intent on every pairing having a puck mover with a grittier/stay-at-home type. This may explain why we get Morrissey-Poolman all day long even though we suspect that Morrissey-DeMelo would be a lot more effective. Although Morrissey just seems broken at this point...
Lol who's the gritty one on that top pair? Poolmans trying but I just don't think he has it in him.

Copp for Ristolainen?
Imagine Morrissey struggles this year, but instead it's every year of his career that he's actually posted bad results. Ristolainen is not a solution for the Jets unless he has a very atypical bounce back (can't really call it even that since he's never posted a good season).
And before the it's a bad team, there are players who do get good results on that team (ex: McCabe).

Well at the beginning of the year we need to get the vets going. Then we are in a fight for every point, we can't trust a rookie with that. Maybe if there are injuries we will play a rookie. Well now it's the back half of the year and we don't have enough experienced defensemen. How did that happen?! Heinola already played 27 minutes and didn't take the team on his back, send that punk to the minors! We need Jordy freaking Benn to save the day. Sure he sucks but he has sucked for a long time so that counts for a lot.

Next year, rinse and repeat.

I still don't understand how we went from "we are going to have a platoon on D" on the bottom pairing to Benn seemingly basically claiming that spot without a rotation? I am not blaming Benn for these losses, Jets problems go far beyond a #6 d-man but absolutely strange to me how that proclamation went on the wayside. I'd be one thing if the Jets were winning with him in the lineup to use the "not break up a good thing" excuse but they are not.

I think we need to keep in mind that the record losing streak for this franchise is within reach. that may be why we need to keep the same lineup going.

We're really scraping the barrel if De Melo needs to be in the top 4. He's good in his role, and paired with Stanley, who takes some chances offensively, we had a really good 3rd pair. Why it was broken up is beyond me.

But Colin Miller isn't the answer. Good teams have a top 3. Like Buff, Trouba, Morrissey/Myers. Like Hedman, Mc Donaugh, Sergachev. Or go through the list. Many of the elite teams in the NHL this year. Only Pittsburgh won with patchwork defense, but elite forwards, and their level of elite is not something we boast.

Sad but true our #1 in terms of monetary value has 1 more ES point than Forbort, who is probably our #3 by default, but is looking rather worn down.

Heinola has all the top 3 potential you could ask for, but he won't even get a sniff, for whatever reason. This veteran d-corps, which is something that Maurice lives by, isn't going to cut it.

O goals out of De Melo, 1 point out of Poolman, Benn is a #6/7 on most teams, and Forbort was a #5 on the team that beat us last year in the playins, now a #3. Added to the only guys, #4 and #44, who can make plays out there, and Josh is not even close to picking up Buff's slack. It's going to be a hard road, if Maurice wants to play his cards the way he does.

Bring in Gerard Gallant... and this board will be bragging about how great our d core of Morrissey-DeMelo; Samberg-Pionk and Stanley-Heinola is by this time next year

I fully agree with this.

I am getting very strong "if he had the defense he'd be fine" Pavelec vibes from this whole situation.

I don't know how anyone can continue to boost for a guy who thinks Bealieau is appropriate on a top pair for a huge stretch. To me things like this make every single thing he does suspect.

If we end up in the Central next year, with no gamebreaking Makar or Heiskanen, or the steady coaching of Scott Stevens in Minny, or Larry Robinson in St. Louis, with solid top 4s, and no guarantees among our role players, (PKers), favouring rookies for those roles, we may be at the bottom of the Central, I dare say. As even Chicago has some good prospects on defense.
