The Wings need to poach some scouting talent from Dallas. They scoop Johnston, and have Stankoven and Bourque coming on, while Robertson, Heisknen, and Oettinger are still kids. Damn.

They've been pretty hit and miss. Honka over Larkin, Gurianov over Barzal/Connor/Chabot, Tufte over Thompson etc.
That 2017 draft was the stars aligning for them and that really set them up well.

And those scouts who aren't former Red Wings scouts, have been there for decades. I don't think it's skill, i believe it's been more like luck for them. We could use that luck though.

worth noting that those examples are all in the first few years of Nill taking over as GM there though so maybe it also just took a while for it to click(although they did still get Hintz in the 2nd in 2015 as well)

Erik Cole... The gift that keeps on giving.

That one and Legwand were infuriating before the ink was dry.

It seems like they hit every 2 years at the draft.

Hey, Wings fans! I enjoyed watching Sebastian Cossa in the WHL, and am kind of amazed that some “experts” are writing him off after his early struggles as a pro. It seems his game, and numbers, improved as the season went on. He’s only 20 years old, so I thought I’d ask those who viewed him more regularly. Do you like development course thus far? Do you see him starting in GR next season?

The expectation is that he'll get every opportunity in GR. Starter may be too optimistic at least as a full-season thing. If he can develop into GR's #1 goalie towards the end of next season I'd say that would count as a highly successful season.

Some people are obsessed over the draft overall number that they expect miracles immediately, so i guess the "experts" started to write him off as soonest he was sent to ECHL. Which was seen as a bad move by some people. Goalies especially are a whole different breed, but i think development is on the right course. Next 2-3 years in AHL, not necessary as a starter next year, im thinking 50-50 split with some veteran at the start of the season at least. Then 1-2 years as a starter and then backup duties in Detroit 1-2 years, then i could expect Cossa becoming a starter for Detroit.

The Red Wings just broomed their entire AHL coaching staff so I am looking forward to seeing how our prospects develop in Grand Rapids going forward. I think Cossa ends up in the AHL next season, he doesn't seem to have any obvious roadblocks within the prospect pipeline. Then hopefully after a year or two in GR he'll be ready to compete for the starting spot in Detroit.

My general sense is we start becoming competitive again in 2024-25 and either that season or the following season Cossa is ready to blossom in Detroit.

Thanks, fellas! I just read about the Griffins purge. I hope a new staff in GR sees them be competitive and a good development model.

He will probably go same way as Mastrosimone and Niederbach .

The wings have his rights until 2025 so this isn’t the end of the world. I’d prefer him in the SHL but this is a good way for him to get top 6 minutes. Allsvenskan may not be as good asSHL but it’s still a good league.

He is going from one Allsvenskan team to another one , not from SHL. I had high hopes for all them , but some how they all looks similar. Both Niederbach and Mastrosimone could still be signed, but doesn't seems likely

someone's gonna sign Mastrosimone

it probably won't be the Wings since he can sign anywhere he wants soon and him not signing by now probably means he wants to go elsewhere, but some team is gonna sign him

I agree, someone will sign him outright.

Their AHL team might like depth.
