It's nice to see Cossa improving but I think Trey Augustine is going to be our goalie of the future. He has technique like Wallstedt and athleticism like Cossa. He's likely going to end up at 6'2'', which is just about perfect for a modern NHL goalie.

I'm really looking forward to his future as a goalie and I hope MSU doesn't decline and leave him in a bad situation. I almost wish the Wings could convince him to play in the AHL next year and platoon with Cossa.

It's more that I think they will leave him in the NCAA. I guess it's good enough for development, but I'm worried because MSU is historically not a great team.

They’re reinventing their program. It’s not UM tier yet but they’re really pushing to be one of the top hockey schools in the NCAA.

They also produced Ryan Miller who was realgud.

That's inaccurate. They've had a terrible stretch the past few years but historically they are solid AF. At any rate, they are currently #5 in the nation and 1st in their conference. They're thriving under Nightingale. I have zero worries about any prospect going through MSU. Red Savage has looked like a new man since he transferred there.

Yeah, I historically remember State always being about the same as U of M from an actual program basis but not having quite the same recruiting power as U of M. And then you usually had another local program kind of go up and down in competitiveness and show well at the GLI. (Like the Blash/ Danny Dekeyser era Western teams).

I guess this all depends on what people mean by historically. MSU had a clearly better hockey program through the 80s. Michigan closed the gap in the 90s and clearly moved past MSU after Mason retired. Lake State was also really good under Jackson in there.

I don't know how the Big Ten could be a bad place for a goalie to develop and I am not sure how a team like MSU could destroy the development of a goalie (unless he sits behind clearly inferior players and the team fires all goalie coaches).

Nightingale came from the USNTDP who are some of the absolute best at developing players (IMO), so that should make you feel at least a bit better. Plus he's plucking a lot of players from the program who have already done some developing there, like Augustine.

Still 3-1 after the 2nd, Skellefteå controlled the puck in the 2nd but barely had any scoring chances. Geneve defended well.

ASP took a hit and maybe drawed a penalty. Im not sure was it ASP or Pudas who took the crosscheck from Winnik. ASP got out played by Manninen in the early stages of the 2nd period. And no PP time so far.

Geneve-Servette wins the CHL championship 3-2. 3rd period was all Skellefteå, they had many scoring chances and ASP got a lot more icetime in the 3rd. Filppula took a bad offensive zone penalty when there was 3:19 left on a clock but Geneve survived.

Congrats to former Wings prospect Val Filppula! Another year, another championship.

Congrats to current Wings prospect ASP! Thats a 6th silver medal for him and thats not necessary a bad thing. Stanley Cup has silver in it, so if my math is correct, ASP will win a Stanley Cup some day.
