Gotta be honest, I firmly believe ASP is the best defensive prospect outside of North America, and may even be in the running for best defensive prospect not in the NHL. Guys like Edvinsson are ahead of him due to age and experience, but I think ASP has the potential to be something real special.

I think if he was in the NCAA for Boston University he'd be doing a lot better than Willander's 4g 16p.

He's gonna be 6' 200lbs and strong as a bull by the time he hits the NHL. Hope he's in the AHL next year.

Very Hronek-esque.

Edvinsson is ahead of him because hes a 6'7 elite skater that has shown he can play at an extremely high level over several years including on North American ice. He also oozes talent. ASP is a really good prospect but it isnt just age or experience that puts Edvinsson ahead

Definitely size helps, but please remind me how tall is Makar

i'd say Alexander Nikishin probably is

the whole Russian star in the KHL thing does add a risk factor that ASP doesn't have though

Yes theres plenty of examples of great, smaller dmen. But it doesnt change the fact that size is a huge advantage in the NHL.

How many dmen in NHL history have had Edvinssons size/reach and skating ability? Hedman might literally be the only one

Athletic is doing prospect pool rankings ran by Pronman. Not a huge fan of his rankings, typically seems to be overly harsh on Wings prospects (could just be my bias though). Just released #9 with AZ. Means we're top 8 at least according to him.

Wheeler, not Pronman, but it doesn't makes things better. Wings don't have enough small, slow, but "skilled" (i.e. put up a lot points in Juniors) prospects for his liking.

There is only one Hronek. I saw him save 5 babies and 3 cats from a tree one time while fending off two owlbears.

Never liked Scott Wheeler's prospect rating models.

Yeah it's entirely too stat driven and minimizes actual pro projection. I will give him credit that he does adjust when he's inevitably proven wrong. He had Wings #3 last year and I'd expect around that range again.

I think putting ASP over Edvinsson before you see him play a game in North America is pretty dumb.

Then again I think Edvinsson checks every box and has every tool you would want in a defenseman. So being a better prospect than him is a very very tough hill to climb in my book.

Yep its also a tough hill because theres maybe 7-8 guys league wide you could rank ahead of him logically. Button has him 25 though lol

I can see ASP breaking a lot of hearts around here. At his position, size does genuinely matter. I have, however, decided to reserve judgment on the kid until I see him in NA pro hockey.
