Agreed our import picks have not blossomed in years. DIONICIO is here by trade and not drafted by us. Hopefully our Euro Scouts if we have any, improve. Maybe German Spitfire should be hired . Seems to grasp the import players way better than most.
It would be very sad if I had a better grasp on the import draft than the entire organization. In this case though, it could very well be true.
I think the team should always swing for the fences in the Import draft. It’s not a bad thing to have only one import on the roster, if anything it gives the team more flexibility come the deadline.
I
love how Barrie has drafted in the past 3 years. They don’t care if the kid reports right away, they swing for the fences on talent, and if that kid comes over (THEY HAVE FOR THEM) they have some STUD‘s that can be flipped for assets down the line.
Artur Cholach (Their version of Sobolev, NHL draft pick)
Oskar Olaufsson (1st round NHL draft pick, commited shortly after, traded for a haul of picks)
Eduard Sale (Didn’t report the first year, but held his rights and they got a first round NHL talent)
Michael Brandsegg Nygard (First round NHL talent, isn’t going to report this year, but after he gets drafted who knows where he goes?)
Endo Meier (Could be a good junior player, has produced at every level he has played, but not sure how his game will translate over here)
A thing a lot of people forget with imports, is that most of them want to spend their draft season in their home country, but after getting drafted, the NHL team has HUGE pull in where they’ll play.
Most of the time, they’ll want them in North America, you might only get them for that one season post draft given how the CHL/NHL agreement works with imports but it’s a great, worthwhile risk to take, escpecially with how diluted the talent pool has become in the import draft with Russian and Belarusian talents unable to be selected.
It’s much better than bringing in a Hebek, or an Eichler who’ll be screwed over come the OHL deadline when the team tells them to pack their bags when a shiny new toy comes along, or the team decides to reroll The dice come the next import draft.
