Smith was the family hire no question, i may get very vocal if its Jack! Start somewhere????? Sure but not at this level nor as a family hire! No i dont like the Smith hire but thatll be on the fan base to react if hes not.
As for Wright, i am told it hasnt been announced and likely wont be UNLESS he doesnt make the show. But no he wont be back by all accounts.
smith is an easy hire because the expectations are low for the next few years. kitchener got the better coach no doubt, not sure the spits had any interest in paying the $$$ to get him.

If Smith is a family hire as u indicate, waiting 13 years to become the head coach is quite a long time to be rewarded,I know Bob Jones is his 1st cousin, other family relations I am not aware of,and he was here before new ownership entered the picture before Boughner and Rychel selling out.
Sources have told me that Kevin Kerr was interviewed for the head coaching job,as well as former Spitfire Matt Cooke who was interviewed for the head coach position, and then asked about the assistant coach job, whether he would take that,my understanding is he awaiting word on another possible team from a team not in the O.
Would be ironic if he were to arrive here,as it was his hit on Savard that ended Savard's playing career.

We know why posters respond in that way.

Since I mentioned that coaches start somewhere, maybe you can tell me why I responded that way. I'm all ears.

Matt Cooke who was interviewed for the head coach position, and then asked about the assistant coach job, whether he would take that,my understanding is he awaiting word on another possible team from a team not in the O.

Cooke would certainly be a solid name and, like Wellwood/Nemisz/etc ahead of him, a good way to get the food in the coaching door.

If Jack Bowler becomes an assistant, I'll have questions but I'll also take it with a grain of salt. They all have to start somewhere, no?

As for Wright - the last I heard from Bowler was (as of a month ago), as far as he knew, Wright was eligible for the NHL, AHL, and OHL. That's directly from him, too. Whether that changes or not, I don't know.
He just turned 23 years old. The Spits just promoted Smith to HC and his or BB's hire to replace Smith is with Jack? Sorry but that doesn't pass the smell test. At least Smith has 10 years experience as an assistant at the OHL level. Losing 10 years behind the bench for a first time HC and first time assistant in the OHL is malfeasance.

When Bowler said numerous people applied for the job but Smith was the best that's pretty much saying there weren't many interviews performed.

Or the other side of things is Smith got his start at age 27 due to Bob Jones. My big thing is and none of us will know after spending 10 years with the Spits did he have any interviews with OHL teams as a HC other than Windsor or in the AHL or NHL for a promotion?

I said that if Jack Bowler became the new assistant, I'd have questions but would take it with a grain of salt because they all start somewhere. It means I'd be curious as to why they felt he was the best candidate, but I'd also give him a chance to prove himself like others had when they joined the league. What's the issue with that? Don't talk about "wasting time"; you brought all of this up lol I couldn't care less about "games."

How much experience behind a bench did Wellwood or Nemisz have when they joined the OHL as assistants? I get it, I really do. The idea that Bowler might (it's not even remotely confirmed yet) hire his son as an assistant sends alarm bells off and, like I said above, I'd have questions. However, given the history of "former player joining the OHL as an assistant", as we saw in Wellwood/Nemisz, I'm willing to let it play out. I can be "hmmmm" while still being "okay, let's see what you've got."

Strangely, this is all because of one person saying the name "Jack." Absolutely nothing is confirmed or even strongly rumoured.

so then lets let jack be an assistant in mississauga or oshawa or something.

like anything, if someone suggests something people will react, you may not like that they react, but they have the right to react, regardless if you lecture them on it after.

Bob Jones had 18 years as an assistant and head coach under his belt when Nemisz and Wellwood were in Oshawa. Certainly not the first gig for Jones. Even the mere suggestion of Jack is quite strange.

Seems like you had all your bases covered with your response though.

Thanks. I know you have a ways of knowing this type of info but I just wish NHL/OHL teams would be more upfront with stuff like this. Maybe Seattle released a statement on it but the last thing I read from them was they had applied for an exception on the rule. So they spoke to that but not the approval, odd I say.

Ok so my info says Kerr did not get interviewed, nor did anyone not willing to accept asst position. This was a done deal when Savard left. Theres a reason Smith was known as jughead. He was a friendly hire on the cheap that would do as he was told. Of course hes learned some things over 10 years, that said theres a LOT more to being HC that cant be taught!

Good riddens Branch. Banning fighting is another way to kill the fan base. They say it's to protect players. What a f@@@ joke, fights break out in all league's usually only after a player has taken a cheap shot. Sure fighting is unusual this day and age but still has its place when the refs came really call a targeting penalty against a bully. Show me the numbers where fighting causes more injuries especially concussions than head checks, hits from behind, slew footing and elbowing causes. You can't!@@@ Reeves was signed for one reason only by the Leafs. Take advantages and you'll pay the piper. How many career ending concussions compared to fights??? Still trying to think of one caused by a fight. Greenup, Wallace, Kasian allowed our high end skilled players the opportunity to shine withoutbeing bulleyedand targetedby the opposition. I don't care if it is an automatic game misconduct. Small price for the long term health or career for a player. Once a player any player drops the mits, the other team thinks twice about that player even if they lost a fight. They know be prepared to face consequences. Notice after a player falls into the next instigating crap suspension rule, the other team takes liberties. Saw it clear last year with Joduin I might add that there has always been less players drafted out of the Q recently based solely on the thought it is a soft league compared to the O or WHL.

Big game today. Theres a LOT of talent in town right now lol. Kind of thing hockeys known for, the guys getting together for a cause. Should be a fun afternoon.
Could an assistant coach be named after this as the family back in town?

Absolutely class by those players and coaches who took out a summer weekend to participate and the fans who supported the cause on thier dime. Super proud for the support by the Windsor spitfires and fans. Honestly brings a tear for the support of Jonesy. Big thumbs up!!!

That was a fantastic afternoon; from the organization to the players, the fans to everyone else, very, very well done. I don't know how much they told Jones about the event beforehand but he got very emotional when he came out pregame. Definitely brought some tears to the crowd.

From NHL stars to Maggio/Cuylle/Johnston being on the same line at times to DiPietro putting on a show, you couldn't have asked for much more, hockey wise. It sounds like over 200k was raised (so I'm told), which is amazing to see. It shows you what the community can do when they need to come together. Well done, everyone!
