William Nylander appreciation thread

You can tell with Willy on his 1st shift .. he gets aggressive and it is his damn puck .. he can own games when he wants too .. he has everything .. most skilled guys don't have blow bye breakaway speed and Willy does .. but he does go away and this last one was a month .. we need him to be da boss man in round 1 again .. and we need Matty to be da boss man too .. those 2 guys decide to rule and it is a very tough team to beat out

He made greening somewhat of a threat in his rookie season. Just give him the responsibility, I've got no doubt he rises to the challenge.

very interesting post-game press conference from nylander

reporter asked him like... you had a slump but it looks like you're back to where you were earlier in the season, what brought about that change?

and nylander said that he picked two random games from the first 40-45 games of the season, and two games more recent to when he did this exercise, and he watched all four games to see what he was doing differently.

he said the main difference was in skating, and it was in 'all areas'.

he was asked whether this was prompted by keefe and he said it wasn't. he said he was pissed off at his own play and so he decided to watch video to fix it. said he's never done this in prior seasons.

cool inside look. nylander cares even if he doesn't give off that vibe.

Nylander last 10 games that Matthews has missed.

6 goals, 9 assists for 15 points.

Tied for 28th in league scoring, his 76 points would make him the leading scorer on 16 out of the 32 teams in the league. Hard to imagine a guy having that type of season being as maligned as he is at times - Leafs fans need to appreciate how good we have it when the #3 guy out of the 3 young stars we drafted is as good as this guy.

What frustrates many fans is he’d put up 100 points if he showed up every game.
He’s been great lately let’s hope he keeps that going for the next few months

Is that really reasonable though, scoring is up this year so we'll probably finish with ~10 guys with 100+ pts, should Nylander really be a top 10 scorer in the league? (There were six 100 point players last time we had a full season)

More consistency would be nice for sure, but the reality is pretty much all players go through poor streatches throughout the year, but most don't get the level of scrutiny Nylander gets during those times.

Tavares gets his share of scrutiny as well. Rest of the team seems to play to their expectations. Who else should be scrutinized?

Forgot Holl also gets his share but his is well deserved

I mean it's the Leafs, there are always going to be those that end up on the wrong end of media and/or fans for whatever reason.

For me it's not a question of who to scrutinize, it's a question of expectations. You say the "rest of the team seems to play to their expectations" is it really reasonable to expect 100 points, being a top 10 scorer in the league, out of Nylander, he's a terrific talent but he's not at that level IMO.

Sure. I just threw out a number. With a more consistent effort he would put up more points. I believe he has the talent to hit a 100.

Willie just needs to be left to drive his own line , he's much better when he doesn't have to worry about getting his center involved and he's much better when he dosen't have to play at half speed so his C can keep up .

TORONTO - William Nylander knew he wasn’t pulling his weight.

The Maple Leafs winger – an elite talent prone to frustrate one shift and produce magic the next – decided to watch video of two randomly selected games from earlier this season.

He then dissected a pair of recent performances.



The idea was to see where Nylander had been in the first half of the campaign. And what was needed for a return to form.

“I was kind of pissed,” Nylander said. “I wanted to get back to the way I can play.”

The fire that was lit continues to burn with the playoffs just over the horizon.

Nylander set a new career-high with his 32nd goal of the season and Jack Campbell made 36 saves to pick up his 30th victory Tuesday in Toronto’s 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.


The fourth member of the Leafs’ so-called “Core Four” that also includes Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and John Tavares, Nylander went eight games without a goal from late January until the middle of February.



“It was all about skating more,” Nylander, who has four goals and four assists in his last five contests, said of what he saw on tape. “I put more focus onto that part of my game. “A little bit off ... not as turned on.”

I truly believe if Mitch didn't have that slow start, he'd be our Hart candidate. He's so good he's making me forget my irritation over milking us for every penny on his last deal.
