He should rest for the rest of the season. Scottie too.
I could support that for the draft pick ramifications, no question this may be their "down" year where the roster is actually being built up with the addition of Ingram as he rehabs, then the eventually hopefully very high draft pick.
Curious of the future of a few guys signed into the future in Quickley and Poeltl, there is no replacement for them. Shead could eventually become that guy, and Quickley has been underwhelming for the most part but he likely bounces back on a more cohesive and healthy team. Boucher seems like a heart and soul guy, also another Canadian. Not to mention longest tenured player, his salary space could also be useful... thats a tough one.
If you build around Barnes, Ingram, Barrett, Dick, 2025 1st rounder.. you have the pieces to acquire another big name if you move a combination of Quickley, Poeltl, Boucher (if resigned). There are alot of very top heavy talented teams that are treading water and going nowhere fast. Some big names are going to be moved this off season, and there will only be so many suitors hoping to go on the upswing that can fit those type of salaries into their cap.
Just for fun and a very uninformed guess of guys that could be available with what the Raptors have to offer to varrying degrees. Depending on how hard they go after someone (eg. 1 x future 1st round picks, vs multiple)
- Zion Williamson. Never healthy, constant weight issues, but... if the Pelicans decide its time to rebuild the rebuild. He fits the age perfectly, problem is he is undersized and I dont think he fits what Masai is trying to build.
- Kevin Durant. He's up there in years, has injury concerns but also... has less miles on him due to multiple seasons off. He grew up a Raptors fan, Phoenix is a shit show... and he is going to score 25+ until he decides to retire. I could see their being mutual interest. Durant has been in enough toxic situations and markets, he could value what Toronto offers plus the roster has potential to compete while he is still good with the right additions.
- Dont see the Kings doing much, they brought in Lavine and still have Demar. If Sabonis ever became available, I personally think he would be the perfect player for the system.
Just off the top of my head, the Easts basement dwellers don't seem to have as much high end talent or guys that may get moved. Plus inside the conference trades are not always easy.
