Will Ovechkin hit 20 goals this season?

It was a textbook goal, not call. No skater initiated the contact.
Everyone in the building including the goalie and zebras were sure that's a good goal. Except sidfans in Toronto.

At 00:12 the body of the Caps player bumps into the goaltenders shoulder, just before Ovie shoots the puck. And its clearly Dowd moving into the goaltender. Its the same time the right skate of Dowd is in the crease.

Big difference between thinking it was a good goal or a bad goal in real time, and thinking it was a good goal or a bad goal after extensive review of the footage with slow motion, zooming, etc.

And you can't count on the fans reactions - if it was not at home, all the fans would be thinking it wasn't a goal. The dynamic of fans in a building about calls is such that they don't care about the rightfulness or the wrongfulness of said calls - only about whether it's good or bad for their team.

In this case, Dowd moved by himself towards Askarov while Askarov was in the crease - thus being deemed as initiating contact. He touches Askarov's blocker and it seems like he touches Askarov's right shoulder too beforehand (and that shoulder is over the crease I would add). He also deports Askarov's stick but that part is more after the shot went past Askarov.

Jagr scored 120 goals in the NHL after turning 38, Selanne scored 132 goals in the NHL after turning 38. Ovechkin has only scored 7 goals so far after turning 38, but everybody on HF Boards agrees that Ovechkin is a better goal scoere than Jagr and Selanne. So realistically Ovechkin should have atleast another 140-150 goals in him before it's all said and done.
Mulletman logic at its best here folks.

If Sidney Crosby scores this goal, there is no chance it gets overturned. Patrick Hornquist used to do this sort of thing constantly, and they were allowing it.
My first thought was how funny this was then my second thought was how sad it must be to have Crosby living rent free.

That's a total BS.
According to you no goals will be scored in the future.
Because every goalie will touch every asses nearby.
That's GI. So no goals. Hockey is dead. According to you.

Strawman. Major one at that.

This has been the rule for a few seasons. Goals are still being scored (and allowed).

You can disagree with the rulebook all you wish. That's fine. But the right call was made per the rulebook as it is written.

Even if this was true (my opinion is that it is, though not egregious enough to disallow if it had happened outside the crease), that's not a requirement to disallow the goal with contact inside the crease. Contact initiated by the goalie inside the crease is enough if it demonstrates the goalie's lack of space to make the save.

By the rulebook, IIRC, any contact initiated by the goalie must occur within his crease (and in an attempt to establish position) to be potentially viewed as GI. In this case, it would indeed hold because Askarov's shoulder was above the crease when it touched Dowd.

Absolute robbery. Sid kicked out the saved puck from goaile catch gloves and NHL counts that's a goal. A goalie touches a skater who standing outside the crease and Ovi's GWG is gone.

Saturday night. Holidays. Full building of fans. Hall of famer face of franchise scores with 1 minute left. Crowd goes crazy. Situation room overturns goal. Crowd pissed. Disjointed OT period with PP waiting for whistle. Then home team loses in a skills competition. Home crowd goes home pissed. Is this the NHL' s intent with the product? For those that also watched the Cowboys/Lions finish it is the same thing really.

The Caps fan apples dont fall far from the Caps crazy owner Ted Leonsis it seems?

Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis thinks NHL favors Penguins

And just like fans (which descends from “fanatics”), Leonsis has some crazy ideas. Some of which require an aluminum foil hat in order to say. A recent article at Deadspin suggests Leonsis believes the NHL favors the Penguins.

"Ted then calls me over to sit by him at his desk and starts clicking his mouse to show me lots of game videos he’d stored on his computer that prove that the NHL wants the Pittsburgh Penguins to win and the Capitals to lose. I was too giddy at what was taking place to retain much of what I was shown, but remember clips of hits by Caps, including Alex Ovechkin, that garnered NHL suspensions, alongside clips of similar hits by Penguins players on Ovechkin and others that went unpunished by the league."

The Capitals fans are really embarrassing themselves in the same manner that their lunatic owner has done in the past.

Yes! Because that exactly situation happening in every game many times. And no one is looking slowmotions too prevent scoring. Except sidfans in Toronto when it comes to Ovi breaking the record. 4th goal disallowed in 30 games. About 30-40 goals in his career.

Chuckle. I said nothing about the Pens or really anything about the call itself. Why are you quoting me?

I think this is essentially the way the rule is interpreted.

Sometime in the next say 60 or 100 goals Ovechkin scores there will be contact inside the crease that allows the goal to stand either because the goalie initiated contact that took himself out of the play superfluously inside the crease or of course initiated contact outside the crease....unless of course they change the rules or the current interpretation.

No conspiracy evidence here though of course disappointing for Washington fans where it was near the edge of the crease and relatively minor contact and therefore almost allowable

Kind of sad to see some of Ovechkin’s most loyal believers completely lose it over this correct disallowed goal. Shows what they think of his chances at breaking the record at this point.

OV will not reach 20 goals this season and will come up short of Gretzky. Still the second most goals ever is pretty damned good.

If that is a correct disallowed goal. By the same "interpretation" of the rules, every single time a stickblade touches an opposing player should be called a hook.

The play above would slot in nicely in this clip...

Ref at centre ice: "We are disallowing a goal even though the puck was no where near it and no goal was called and instead calling a hook on Ovechkin for the slight blade contact. Ovechkins earlier goal is rescinded and the score reset to 2-1.
Gretzky approves of this call as does Sidney Crosby, who hopes to pass Ovechkin in goalscoring sometime in his late fifties after Ovechkin has long retired"

I don't give two shits about Sid or the record. I hate goalies, so that's why I'm here.
