I only saw the first half of the 1st period last night for Iowa - did ROR get hurt? Looks like he is out of the lineup today. Thought he was decent first handful of games but have missed last couple.
I don't think so, but he might be either hurt , or Army wants to goose him a little bit. I think he's been ok so far...decent without the puck, and a nice first pass, but no points. Maybe Army wants him to do more. Both SJo and Hunt have shown more offense.

Looks like Khusnutdinov centered the first line today for St. Petersburg and had 1g 3a.
1g 1a on the PP and 1a on the PK. Only blemish was 2/8 on FO

He’s looking like he has the potential to be a stud

Just reminds how how batshit what Kaprizov was doing in the KHL was.
If he can get close to a ppg next season, he’ll be close to KK97 in his d+4 season, for whatever it’s worth. Slower progression getting there, but Khusnutdinov has had less opportunity playing for a far better franchise. I don’t think Khusnutdinov is a dynamic scorer like Kaprizov, but I think his range of outcomes include a much higher ceiling than when he was drafted. He’s checked off a lot of boxes to this point. 2 time 1C for Russia at the WJC. Captain at every level so far (even an A in the KHL at 20yo). Production similar production curve to someone like Buchnevich. SKA had a ton of the top prospects in their system, but the only ones they kept are Michkov and Khusnutdinov. I think he and Lambos are in a tier of their own and in contention for 2nd best prospect after Wallstedt.

More on Khusnutdinov- smaller player like Rossi, but he’s a notably better skater. I don’t think he’s as good of a playmaker as Rossi, but if you told me he ends up being the better player I wouldn’t be surprised.

Ohgren scored and played on the first line today. He’s not producing too much yet over in the Swedish second league. If we would’ve taken Snuggerud I would be feeling better about that last draft, but I don’t think the expectation for Ohgren was ever going to be sure-fire top-6 forward. He probably slots into replacing Foligno’s 3rd line depth scoring role long term. He has less grit but ideally ends up a better scorer.

I liked Snuggerud, and would've been ok taking him in the 25th spot if Yurov wasn't there, but TBH, I didn't see as a better choice than Ohgren at the time.

We'll see. I still like what little I've seen of Ohgren. Decent size and frame, nice shot, better skater than some think, and an overall pretty good game.

I’ve watched a couple of Barrie’s games in the OHL, and while Haight wasn’t the guy I was focused on, he looks pretty troublesome. He’s got really good hands and close to an NHL caliber shot, but his compete isn’t even close to pro level. I also often found myself think he made the wrong play with the puck, which makes me question his hockey sense. Obviously he still has a chance to play games in this league, but as an undersized player who doesn’t skate or compete all that well I don’t know if I see him having a real chance to carve out a role for us.

appreciate the update. It takes a lot of patience and discipline to watch a game or two of a random team and glean anything from it, unless a player really sticks out.

@57special How has Walker looked for Iowa? Potential call up later in the season?
He's their best player so far. I think that MN doesn't know quite what to make of him so far, and since the injuries in MN have been to physical players rather than skill players he hasn't been the right choice to bring up. Also, is he a C, or a RW? Does he need more pro time?

I know him and his game extremely well, so I am of two minds as to how much potential he has. He's already 23yo, so I expect him to be far ahead of player like Rossi, but OTOH, I am cognizant that moving up to the AHL from college is an adjustment for any player.

I do think he deserves a call up at some point, and hope that it is beside Boldy. Walker's speed should open things up on that line, and I think he might have enough skill to take advantage of Boldy's. I don't know that he would be the best choice for the 4th line....that might be Milne, eventually? Dewar, and Shaw, are grittier, and probably better defensively? I think Walker is faster and quicker than both of them.

I know Sammy has an edge to him, but when i see him I see a player who could really use 10 lbs, so he can withstand the physical game more easily. He's not tall, but he is certainly taller than Dewar and Shaw, but maybe he is one of those guys who just can't put on weight.

If Rossi goes down it might be fun to see him and Walker play together. Maybe Beckman on the other wing, but I am really souring on him- maybe Swaney?

Interesting that our prospects since 2015 (besides Boldy) have been forgettable at best, when we drafted JEE, Kap, and Greenway(debatable how big of a deal he is).

What if Rossi, Ohgren, Beckman, ROR and Wallstedt continue on their present, very ordinary, trajectory? I mean, is Sammy Walker and Simon Johansson our hope for the future?:banghead:

That draft pick drought after 2015 hurts. Only having two picks in the top 60 in a 3 year span is no bueno, especially when you waste one of them on F. Johansson.

It also made me realize that I should be more patient with ROR. I had been comparing him in a a mildly unfavorable manner to S Jo, but have just realized that the latter is two years older than him. He should be ahead in his development.

At this point, the somewhat unheralded promotion of Dewar and Shaw to the NHL is one of our big "Draft Success" stories.

I guess it’s good we’ve got Lambos, Yurov, Khusnutdinov, Peart, etc playing really well.

As bad as the 2016-2018 drafts were, there were some decent bottom 6 players selected: Duhaime, Shaw, Dewar. That’s not bad when you have minimal 1st and 2nd round picks.

Yep. No 2nd round picks for three straight years (thanks Fletcher). We also traded one of the two 1st rounders and let the other walk to get a compensatory pick, both essentially returned 2nd round picks.

Kunin wouldn’t be a bad Swiss Army knife to have currently, but in the long run Khusnutdinov is showing a lot of potential.

Beckman was great in the WHL. Kunin was a really good college player. For most prospects, we just have no idea if they are going to be good or better NHL'ers based on their Minor league or CHL play.

This is a really good reminder for the stat watchers amongst us, especially (guilty as charged).
