Depends on the player. Yurov is considered to be a top 5 talent, maybe? You want those guys to be sniffing around the NHL in their D+2 year. Some later picks start their D2 season in the NHL and never look back...Mercer, Jarvis, and Lundell come to mind, and no one considered them elite talents when they were drafted.I don't really mind a 2 year extension or playing in the KHL until 21 or 22, my worry would just be lack of team control over their development since KHL is not a development league and they have no NHL out clauses.
Suppose 1 year into a 2 year contract, this hypothetical KHL team decides to limit Yurov's/Marat's ice time dramatically as a negotiation tactic to make them either sign another extension or potentially "waste" a full year of development. Obviously this would be a lose-lose situation from Wild's perspective with zero control over what happens.
I realize this isn't necessarily a realistic concern to have, but it's something I would never even have to consider if they were playing in say, Finland, Sweden or Switzerland.
Any, what i was saying is if Yurov is extended for two years after this year, making it his D+4 year before he even gets a chance to play in the NHL. That's too long, IMO, for a top talent, IF his development goes well.
