Well that's no the correct way to view top 10 players imo. Kessel was a top 10 player by your logic multiple times. But he lacks severely in key areas of the game. A guy like Kopitar scoring 70 points in a season is a significantly better player than Kessel scoring 90.

"By my logic", no, by your misinterpretation. A player can finish top 10 in scoring and not be a top 10 player. Matthews hasn't finished anywhere near top 10 in scoring yet. He needs to if he's to be a top 10 player.

Last night:

Mcdavid: 24:04
Matthews: 16:48

And this happens fairly regularly. I really do wish we'd see what Matthews could do if he got ice time like Connor (I am not slagging Connor AT ALL, just wish Matthews received the same amount of opportunity).
the Leafs have a deep team, but Connor is the Oilers team. it's unfortunate but this is the result

Yeh I'm so extremellyyyyy biased to rank a player who's outside the top 15 in league scoring for 2 years now as outside the top 15. Lol. Are you sure it isn't biased to rank a player as generational in the same breath of Crosby just cause he's a Leaf? LOL.
In general I’m talking towards you flossing over the Oilers problems lol.. and highly highly downplaying Matthews. Obvious agenda is obvious

They must also understand that McDavid is outside top 10 in PPG, and is barely top 10 in scoring despite having played every single game. For what McDavid was represented to be, I’m sure Oilers fans also understand that the Next Gretzky should be sitting at 60 points and 1st in scoring right now, and instead to sit barely in top 10 scoring and 13th in PPG is inexcusable for the supposed Next Gretzky. No Oilers fan could be happy with that. That is some serious underperformance.

Nah we watch the games, we saw McDavid get 3 points and look faster than ever in his first game against Calgary, then saw him lose 15 pounds and slow down immensely. Now we've seen him recover and the speed is back but the team around him sucks. We've also seen him win an Art, Hart, and Lyndsey. We also never called him the next Gretzky cause we're not unrealistic homers like leafs fans. But it's okay we can still call him Generational and have the support of NHL writers, the NHLPA, general consencus of Hfboards, AND scouts who have been following him since he was like 10 years old. Whereas it's only leafs fans that can stand on the hill that Matthews is generational and they get ridiculed for it cause stats.

Flossing over the Oilers problems? Oh did you want me to go in depth in a Matthews thread? LOL. I'm not downplaying Matthews I'm ranking him appropriately. When a player is ranked 20th in scoring and I say he's about a top 20 player, that's not downplaying, that's being objective and realistic. The flip side to that for leafs fans is trying to convince the hockey world that Matthew is generational despite not even being close to proving he's better than his peers.

But why is this supposed generational player and undisputed best player in the game outside top 10 in PPG scoring, and barely top 10 in scoring, barely on pace for 90 points, and isn’t helping his team win, all in his third year? I’m not hearing any good explanations. Shouldn’t he be leading the league in scoring in his 3rd year? Shouldn’t his team be in contention in his 3rd year? If he’s so king, there has to be a reasonable explanation for why McDavid is producing so poorly in relation to expectations. He should be playing better in his third year than he did in his second year, and he is not. Why?

Yes you are flossing over the Oilers problems with excuse after excuse after excuse. They are just a bad team who overachieved last year. And he is absolutely better than most of his peers, again with the Matthews downplaying I see.. LMAO

Just because someone is top 10 in scoring, doesn't mean they're a top 10 player. However, to be a top 10 player, you need to at least finish within the top 10 in scoring at some point in your career. This obviously doesn't include defensemen and goaltenders.

Lets not pretend like Matthews has Datsyuk level defensive play.

Apparently we expected too much out of Matthews his rookie season?

Where are all these Leaf fans in here calling him generational? I do see somebody keep bringing it up and mentioning someone else in that light. Someone who obviously has never looked at what the actual generational players do versus their peers. Someone who trumpets objectivity but runs from any chance to discuss numbers other than points (of which there's a whopping 9 point pace difference this year). I wonder if you realize how delicious it is that you are captain objective and call out other fanbases on this subject and have named yourself "TheNumber4", while being practically allergic to numbers and also cling to awards of which all but one are purely subjective?

You forgot the standings. Whoops.

Yeh cause standings changes the fact that McDavid was the undisputed best player last year nad is still probably the consensus best player right now?

Because McDavid isn’t scoring enough in relation to expectations. Can you imagine Gretzky being barely top 10 in scoring in his third year? Gretzky was running away with the scoring title with 200 points in his third year, not being a barely top 10 scorer with 105 points behind 10 players. I thought you all said he was the Next Gretzky. I could’ve sworn this after the Oilers’ first game this season.

Lol you really need to go all the way back to Gretzky and his unattainable to anyone till the end of time stats to try to make your point? News flash there's a generational player that's a little more recent and relevant. His name is Crosby, and he Only lead the league in points once in his first 8 years of NHL hockey.

Nice point though LOL.

Lol Barkov. Woopty ****in doo. I've seen Barkovs statement used to justify Matthews generational status plenty, newsflash for you guys' when the entire league votes him as MVP, you know, like the Hart trophy McDavid won, then you have an argument.

Well considering this is only his second season, I think some time should be given. I swear some of you will need for the kid to walk or water before you take to him just because of the crest on his jersey.

when looming at this year's play alone I don't think there is a consensus that mcdavid is the best player. in fact I'd argue very few think he is.

They seemed to have disapppeared into the shadows never to be seen from again (hopefully). I guess all the logic and rationality of those who rate Matthews accurately finally got them to walk back their insane overrating of Matthews. Yay I guess.

Lol I didn't look at what generational players do before I deemed McDavid generational? If all the scouts were wrong about McDavid since he was 10 years old maybe you have a point. If he wasn't voted by hockey writers as the best you might have a point. If he wasn't voted by NHL players as the best maybe you have a point. If didn't win the award for most points maybe you have a point.

Oh and the "subjective" awards of ted lyndsay and hart are much stronger indications that he's generational than "loose puck recoveries advanced stats" that no one has ever cared about until Matthews needed a reason to be viewed as good as McDavid.

This is the NHL. One forward can not carry a whole team. He led the league in scoring in his 2nd year. He is on pace for 92 points this season (still more than Matthews) and he can only be expected to pick up his pace since he is over his sickness.

But just to humour you, if 92 points in 82 games is so much under expectations, then I guess we can firmly say McDavid > Matthews.

This is the current standings of great players in the league. In order.

Kucherov
Getzlaf
Stamkos
MacK
Tavares
Bailey
Giroux
Voracek
Schwartz
Wheeler
Marchand
Gaudreau
McDavid
Hall
Ovi
Kopitar
Kessel
Marchassault
Boeser
Kane
Matthews
Malkin
Chef
Schenn

I think it's about time we give the top guys some generational love. Specially Getzy, who gets absolutely 0 love from HF. The man is a beast. One of the finest two way players and passers in the game who has successfully led his team to the playoffs and top of the league standings many many times. Also has a cup.

Lol oh, you want to talk about context. McDavid dealt with 2 flus and lost 15 pounds this year and is being supported by a floundering team. And he's STILL 9 points ahead? Hey what about last year when they both had good teams and both played injury free? How was the gap then? Lol

Can we say McDavid is outside the top 20 is your question? I don't know would you consider a player coming off a Hart, Art, and Ted Lyndsey year while still being in the top 10 in scoring despite being supported by a bad team and losing 15 pounds a top 20 player?

I'm confused. In one post, points is the be all and end all. In another, we have to consider everything.

Could you please take a stance and stick to it? I haven't really got the time to chase you around the field while you move the posts.

While we are at it, could you try answering the questions you were asked? You remind me of that scene in Bravehart where the Irishman meets William Wallace and is speaking to God and then replies to Wallace and company "The Almight says, "Don't change the subject, just answer the f@#$' question."

Of course when asked about actual numbers you are reminding me of the scene from the Holy Grail with the Knights of the Round Table: "Run away! Run Awaaayyy!!!"

How long does it take to get over a flu?

Yeah I’ll be honest. A third year player barely top 10 in scoring and outside top 10 in PPG, who can’t lead his team to the playoffs? He should be making his team a cup contender, let alone a playoff team. I’ll be honest. This doesn’t sound like a generational player to me.

Don't the Oilers have Talbot, Draisaitl, Nuge, LUCIC!, Klefbom, Larsson and the newly emerging star Darnell Nurse? I didn't know Oilers were a one man crew with 19 other bums. I'm sorry to hear that.
