Why a Zach Hyman - Toronto extension, isn't a closed door, and may still even be likely.

I really hate the corner Dubas has painted himself into but that $5.5M definitely could be spent more wisely towards Dubas' vision of the team. In the current cap climate, for that money ($5.5M + $0.75M for another player), I believe he could sign a couple of quality players who are more than just last-kick-at-the-can types like Jumbo Joe.

They cannot afford to sign any player who may already be starting to crack, for any kind of term. This is the cost of the big 4 and that they are already paying Tavares into several declining years. They need more team friendly deals, not to further mortgage their future to keep an underachieving lineup intact.

Imagine Dubas leaving a $4 million cap hit 8 seasons from now, with him hopefully already gone for 7 seasons. What a present that would be. It would be a fitting end to his horrendous reign of terror.

We all love what Hyman brings to the table but his goal scoring is an anomaly.

He could score 20 goals, he could score 25 or 15. Again a player like Toffoli at 4.2 is a better natural goal scorer. Hyman has worked hard for where he is but is also a fortunate product of playing in a top 6 here.

If we are going 5 million, I’d rather sign a Palmeri who again is a better goal scorer and better sample in the playoffs.

To keep Hyman the 3.8-4 x 4 is where you go.

People are thinking that the RNH deal will be precedent but Dubas is known to be an outlier. I'm just hoping it's not going to be another $11m contract.

with Mirtle coming out and saying Hyman's getting 5.5m x 6yrs on the open market you know it's a lock Dubie and Hyman have a deal done around 5m and are waiting to announce it after the expansion draft in which time they'llboth be weeping about how Hyman lubs being a Leaf and how smart Dubie is to get him on a team friendly deal

I really hope you're wrong about that yet it seems completely plausible. This is exactly how this current regime rolls.

Yeah, it's kind of funny how a Leafs mouthpiece like James Mirtle could get a sense of what teams are willing to offer Hyman when the market isn't even open.

Not the first time they've used the media like that though.

Just seeing that RNH extension I can't believe a player took a lower cap hit as a UFA on their 3rd deal than what they made before that.

I can't imagine any scenario where 16, 88 or 34 take less than atleast 10% raise on 10.9, 6.96, 11.634 on their 3rd deals (barring they stay around the same level as now)

RNH sucked this year but his past 3 years he had paced for 63 points (48 in 62), 69, and 77.

Him taking 5.1 is just absurd. He gave up money he could've gotten as a UFa to stick with the team he believes in.

RNH as a UFA had to be able to get 6+ on 6 years atleast.

He choose to be an Oiler at a deal that will be a bargain to steal for 6 years atleast.

Hyman take notes, Riles take notes, Foligno if your coming back take notes, Andersen if your coming back take notes.

Dubas would have given nudge 7m if he were a Leafs.

Probably.

This Hyman and Rielly signings/decision not to sign and potentially trade(Mo) will tell me if Dubas has learned anything since the big 4 debacle

If Hyman comes back maximum should be 4M and 4 maybe 5 years.

Rielly max should be 6.5M on 7 or 8 years.

Rielly shouldn't be on the roster come training camp if he hasn't worked out an extension with the leafs. He should be dealt and used to gain assets or a NHL missing piece if he wants to much

Problem is u don't want the stick boy trading any major pieces. The Kadri trade was plenty proof of that. Seriously how does he keep his job? SMH.

We lost the series, first ten mintues, best assassin I have ever seen took him out with his knee, sure he felt bad, but was it on purpose..... I think my lone theory of intent was proved when he stoke the stick of some vegas knight

Why did he do it, cause he is the best ninja ever.

The east explanation on RHN is he kinda sucks. Overpaid on the second deal which expected him to blossom into a real impact player and now he’s settling into a Kyle Turris type career. So $5.1 AAV kinda makes sense.
