Why a Zach Hyman - Toronto extension, isn't a closed door, and may still even be likely.

The loss of Hyman is going to weaken the Leafs LW side even more, leaving Mikheyev as the only one and he is really a 3rd line player based on his limited offensive production.

Going to make the Leafs even more top heavy, unless they can find some help on LW side for cheap come UFA time.

Why is every thread end up being a Marner discussion.
Pretty sure if there is a thread watching Leafs games oversea, somehow it will become a Marner discussion.

Would be interesting to see what Dubie's plan is. Having the team so top heavy doesn't really scream contender to me.

I want a 3rd for hymans rights

The teams going to miss him a lot but he's worth 4M x 4 and not a penny more

The COVID situation has to impact leaf players contracts. Toffoli got 4 x 4 last offseason. He's better than Hyman and took less due to COVID

Hyman, Rielly and anyone else we bring in shouldn't be getting paid crazy UFA money

Having Seattle sign him as our expansion loss wouldn't be bad either.

If teams really are willing to go 8 years he'll be worth a lot more than a 3rd.

Are GMs Pejorative Slured?

Andrew Ladd was a better player than Hyman when he signed his 7 year deal same with Lucic and Eriksson

All those guys bodies broke down and they didn't have the ability to live up to a 6 or 7 year deal

Hyman is a better skater than those guys but has less natural puck skills and is 29 with an injury history

Going past 5 years is simply crazy

My counter is that Marner didn't perform well in the series BECAUSE of Hyman. Hyman got all the passes from Mitch and couldn't bury. Matthews had someone draped on him all series and was never open. Hyman needed to convert a couple of the multiple beauty opportunities he was given by Mitch.

Then, wouldn't that be a criticism of the coaching staff for not trying to change the lines a bit?

I loved Hyman here as much as the next person, but this past year or so you could see the regression in his game. The amount of injuries and punishment he took... I am not surprised the guy wants security of a 7-8 year contract.

I've been wrong before but that seems like a big leap of hope that he will stay healthy and play up to his standards. He might still be pretty good for a few more years but... I'm glad the Leafs are not taking that leap.

Going rate for UFA rights is typically a 5th. The highest I'm aware of is Hamhuis returning a 3rd. I wouldn't expect more than a 4th or 5th.

I think he knows his body could give out soon due to his playstyle.

It makes sense to grab that long-term contract at the height of his peak.

He's a pending UFA. How many teams are seriously willing to go there ?? Not many so why give up more than a 3rd. Are there any players rights that went for more than a 3rd?? I don't think so.

If steams are wanting that 8th year on the Hyman deal he would need to sign before he is traded. Thus the Leafs have leverage to jack up the price. All it takes is 2 to start a bidding war.

You are right but I don't think there ever has been a sign and trade in the NHL. It is possible in theory but I just do not see it for Hyman.

My pick was the Seattle all along. Perfect role model for a team wanting to build a reputation on hard work and effort. #SeaKraken
