Why a Zach Hyman - Toronto extension, isn't a closed door, and may still even be likely.

That's exactly why Dubas messed up in the first place. You can never tell another player that is somewhat important to the team to take a discount. Nobody else did...why should they? I hope Hyman makes some good money...just not from us. I am Leary about his age and injury history.
I think Hyman is going to sign with the expansion Seattle Kraken and get his fair payday.

He seems like the perfect hard working warrior an expansion team would love setting an example of how to come to work and willing to give it 100% as good role model.

GM Ronnie Francis smart enough to know they're going to need to outwork teams as they won't out-skill them from their expansion players.

A startup team isn't going to have any cap issues with no players under contract.

Would be so funny if Hyman could not get the contract elsewhere and circle back to the Leafs but Leafs already signed his replacement and end up signing a 1mil/1yr deal.

Ironically the exact type of players we need lol

Zach Hyman is getting seriously overhyped on the pre free agent market right now. The bargaining power he supposedly carries you’d think he just came off two Stanley Cups and scored like Alex Killorn during this playoff run.

TSN insiders today were suggesting his asking price is between $5 and $5.5 mil on 5-6 years.

Id only sign Hyman to 5yr, 17.5 -20 million at most. His max worth is 3.5-4 million cap hit. Hyman is a role player, he outworks guys and cleans up around the net. I think 4 million is a touch high for Hyman, big mistake @ 5 or 6.

Goodbye Hyman. Way overhyped. Did not offer any physicality to the fray and still not sure why he is asking for so much money. Remarkably solid player, but like others have said, he hasn't done much to warrent anything over 3.5. As always, some chump will pay him, and good for Hyman, why not take the money.

Same amount the Avs offering for Landy.
Either Hyman is a lot better than we think or Landy is a lot worse, lol.

Last 4yrs:

Landeskog 16:02es, 21gls/50pts pace / 3:53pp, 11gls/23pts pace / 0:26pk
Hyman 15:10es, 21gls/45pts pace / 0:37pp, 2gls/4pts pace / 2:16pk

Last 2yrs

Landeskog 15:59es, 20gls/50pts pace / 3:58pp, 11gls/23pts pace / 0:03pk
Hyman 16:01es, 25gls/50pts pace / 1:17pp, 5gls/10pts pace / 1:55pk

Sad day when he leaves and just remember this come playoffs, if we make it.

I don' think we need to worry about that when the "rich four" don't show up in the playoffs and the "poor 16" just aren't good enough. I don't think his physicality would stand out as much if he played on another team as it does with the Leafs, who mostly play scared.

Thanks for the stats. Starting to see why Dubas’s version of the Leafs will always struggle to win the first round.

From the stats I looked at Landy is pretty much a 50pts player beside three years in his career where he played 36, 72 and 54 games. And a few seasons where he was PPG or very close. Hyman never even touch the 50 pts once.
Hyman best season is on pace for around 50 pts where Landy best season is PPG. On top of that Landy will score 20 goals as he has pretty much done that his whole career except for the year he played 37 games where Hyman only done it twice.
I am all for advanced stats but it is only part of the picture.
Landy is a top line winger bc he produces, while Hyman is a top line winger bc of the role he plays on the Leafs.
Landy can play with Bergy and Pasta and that line won’t miss Marchand that much but if you Hyman on that line, doubt it will be as effective.

Hyman scores goals at the same rate as Matthews other linemate does. :wg:

Last 2 years & playoffs

Hyman ... Regular season: 94 games ... 36 goals & Playoffs: 12 games .. 2 goals
Marner ... Regular season: 114 games ...36 goals & Playoffs: 12 games .. 0 goals

In 20 less games Hyman and just as many reg season goals and no need discussing Marner's playoff goals.

So what % of Marner's $10.9 mil contract is Zach worth on Leafs internal pay scale? 50% = $5.45 mil :help:

Would be so funny if Hyman could not get the contract elsewhere and circle back to the Leafs but Leafs already signed his replacement and end up signing a 1mil/1yr deal.

It's that type of economic environment in the league now. Still, he isn't that type of player: some floater with skill and an overinflated level of self-worth (cough - Duclair).

The demand for Hyman will be there. He's exactly the type of forward every team believes it should add. Plus the cap this off-season has a hidden in plain sight relief valve: an expansion draft that distributes cap commitment from the existing teams at an average rate of $2.5M per team.

Why would anyone want his rights unless they were going to 8 years? I don't think any GM is insane enough to do that.

Only the Leafs can give him 8 years everybody else only 7 year term.

Any player needs to be on that teams roster no later than the trade deadline of the following season to be eligible to receive a 8 year deal as per CBA.

To sign him prior to going on the open market as Habs did with Edmunson last year. This year you also have to protect them though which makes less sense for most teams.

It only takes ONE GM *Oilers*

This year in unique in that there is an expansion draft and once teams submitted their protected list this Saturday the new Seattle franchise is allowed to talk to other teams UFAs ahead of free agency window officially opening.

So if some team wants Zach rights to sign him early they might consider tossing a late round pick Leafs way perhaps. This might be a part of their expansion list strategies 7-3-1.

The one thing that is clear by Leafs allowing Hyman to talk to teams early is that bringing him back is not Leafs highest priority otherwise Dubas is simply letting other teams drive up the price to retain him, if Hyman's camp gives the Leafs to right to match any offer. So if another team isn't interested in bidding against the Leafs then obtaining his rights secures they're not being used simply for contract purposes for Leafs getting him signed.

Seattle wouldn't be that team that offers a pick, but if they come to terms with Hyman they may just select him in the expansion draft from Toronto next Wednesday and sign him prior to free agency.
