I firmly believe that 9 times out of 10 the next player to touch the puck after Hyman does is an opposing player.

This a thousand times. At our house we are constantly aware of it and kinda have a game where we just say things like "he did it again" and "oh it's Hands he'll lose it" or "he's open, oh it's Hands they won't pass it to him". The thing to watch is Marner, Matthews and Reilly always look for each other and will attempt to pass to each other even if Hands is open. They know how bad he is, for some reason half of Leaf Nation doesn't see it.

I think that's why people like Hyman so much - he's one of the few that can hit. go to the dirty areas and push back. So we over-value him because of the other creampuffs. But we can't overpay for that, especially with term. According to Shanny and Dubas though, the core will figure it out. So yeah.......

I concur with what you are saying. We think because Hyman does things nobody else will do that he is unique league wide...he isn't and to be honest I don't even know if Dubas would go after him as a UFA if he was playing on a different team. Dubas doesn't value it highly like he does pure skill (whatever that even means) over everything else. How Dubas can say Dennis Malgin is skilled and Mason Marchment is not is beyond me.

He's had maybe 3 hits worth caring about in his entire time here, the McAvoy hit is the only one that was that serious and it's still pretty tame compared to other playoff hits. I get it, I like his work ethic and how much abuse he's willing to take getting to the puck first, but he doesn't hit people. He's not an aggressive or violent guy, he only uses the body to establish position and wait for someone else to come get the puck.

Matthews probably has a longer and more impressive hit compilation than Hyman does at this point.

Truth - he's not going to bulldoze over guys but he has no problem going into the corners and battling.

I can't believe Matthews and Marner massive overpayments are costing them their best linemate :laugh:

So who does Dubas figure will be a great replacement? Alex Galchenyuk?
Matthews/Marner did a lot more to elevate Hyman's performance than the other way around. Dubas should be trying to find the next Hyman, not overpaying the 29 year old with an injury history

It is what it is.

Gotta find a good replacement for him. Ideally someone younger and of course cheaper.

Hyman is caught between a rock and a hard place.

This is a catch 22 for me, as Leafs need more Hyman types, to offset the figure skater types, but those soft players eat up so much cap you can't afford to bring Hyman back for what he is worth to compensate for their know weaknesses.

Hyman isn’t in the jam, the Leafs are. Someone will pay him, and another hole opens up on the good ship Maple Leafs.

I can't believe people are pinning for a guy with 1 point in 7 playoff games. I get it, he works hard, but he also has to produce since he is playing on our top 6. I won't miss him when he is gone. But yes, Leafs depth is thinning every year. We are becoming the 4 amigos and nothing else, at least at forward. It's like we're Chicago but with none of their success.

Who ever is cheap and can still bend over to tie his skate laces will be the replacement
:)

Agreed and as much Hyman is a local boy and nobody can question his work ethic and effort on a consistent basis and another team is going to see his value and pay the man.

So much for the hometown discount angle. All these guys care about is money.

Isn't it a little late now to start demanding home town discounts, after you've already set a bad precedence you're willing to overpay.

If you have 3 kids and you buy the first 2 fancy sports cars are you really expecting the 3rd to say I'm fine with a used Volvo, and/or blame him for being greedy?

Can’t say I disagree. Just found it humorous that some were clutching onto the hometown discount possibility. I don’t blame Hyman though. His body is looking like it’s deteriorating and it’s in his best interest to cash in now before it’s too late.

That's exactly why Dubas messed up in the first place. You can never tell another player that is somewhat important to the team to take a discount. Nobody else did...why should they? I hope Hyman makes some good money...just not from us. I am Leary about his age and injury history.

He played like he was already gone in the playoffs. He used to outwork everyone but was noticeably ineffective this year.

I think the injury and lack of warm up games affected him more than we thought it would. I assumed he would be at 95% for the playoffs and he was not even close to the same guy as before. I would also say he was starting to lose more board battles over the last year than he had in his previous 4-5 yrs here. He would go in 1-3 and still come up with the puck most of the time...it was a treat to watch. He was one of my favorite players but sentiment gets you Louie Eriksson contracts that you regret later.

It is simple. Leafs need players like Hyman. There is no sugarcoating that.
But Leafs should not overpay for this type of players.
A quick look around and I think Hyman is at best 4mil AVV and that’s being really generous. If I am Dubas I would give him 3.75mil and 8 years: frontloading the crap of that contract.

I love Hyman. Someone is gonna pay him. He's basically the rich man's Gallagher. I think MB will make a push for him in MTL if he hits free agency.
