If Staal signs long-term:
C - Staal
A - Girardi
A - Nash or St. Louis
If Staal doesn't sign long-term but isn't traded:
C - Girardi
A - Staal
A - Nash or St. Louis
If Staal doesn't sign long-term and is traded over the summer:
C - Girardi
A - McDonagh
A - Nash or St. Louis
I think regardless, one of Nash or St. Louis is going to take the A that is vacated by Richards. You can't have every letter on the team being a D. Staal gets the C if he signs long-term, otherwise it goes to Girardi IMO. Next in line for a letter after those players should be McDonagh.

People saying Brad doesn't deserve the A, stop being haters. I guarantee you Brad is huge in the room, being the oldest and most accomplished player on the team (prior to MSL).
I always saw Cally, Girardi, Staal and Richards being the most vocal leaders in the room.

Richards has played legitimately hard this season. I can't rag on him too much.
That being said, he absolutely has to be bought out at the end of the season.

Can I ask why most people have Staal ahead of Girardi? Girardi's been with the team longer, is a better player, is more durable and is locked up long term, while Staal is not.

I'd say that a consistently healthy Staal is really asking for a lot. I just don't see Staal being a good fit as captain for the Rangers. Girardi exhibits more attributes of a captain than Staal.

I do take a healthy Staal over Girardi 9 times out of 10, though.

Not every important player can have a letter. Zucc has been great this year. But in the pecking order hes far behind Staal, Girardi, McDonagh and Richards. An argument can be made for MSL and Nash as they are veterans and have worn Cs before. Then you have Stepan who is definitely leadership potential. Even Boyle, if resigned, would be ahead of Zucc in the pecking order as a heart and soul guy who's a veteran and been with the team for a while.
Zucc is having a great year and he's all heart but that doesn't make him ahead of these players in the pecking order for letters. Don't forget this is his first full season with the team.

I'm shocked that Girardi is 3rd in this poll. I don't see the rush to bestow such a weight on McDonagh. He's not goin' anywhere.

I think a lot of those votes only go to Staal because he currently has the A and they feel it would be unfair to have a player like Girardi leapfrog him to be the captain.

I agree. McD should get an A if anything. Staal should get the C if he re-signs. He's the longest tenured skater on the team and has worn an A for a while. If he doesn't then give it to G. He's similar to Cally in that he's a warrior and leads with his play on the ice.
