Sather will talk to Staal and see if he wants to be moved to Carolina with his brothers. If not they will go and resign him for a good offer and make him captain. If he wishes to leave then I believe Sather will make a really good offer to Carolina. Shero was able to get a great return for Jordan. A 3rd line center with tons of potential. I am not seeing that kind of return but I am sure somewhat the same.

To be honest about it. I think Staal is overrated and its not simply his past injuries. This season hes made some good plays but overall on the defensive end he has made some bad decisions especially with positioning.

On one hand I say we keep him. Its hard to find defensive depth. Its hard to find that in youth players. On another, if we can get a nice return then that be fantastic.

I agree. McD should get an A if anything. Staal should get the C if he re-signs. He's the longest tenured skater on the team and has worn an A for a while. If he doesn't then give it to G. He's similar to Cally in that he's a warrior and leads with his play on the ice.

Girardi's the longest tenured skater.

I don't understand why so many people think Staal should be captain.

1.) He's very young for captaincy at 27 (I thought Callahan was too young too). He's not even the eldest on the blue line.

2.) He doesn't come off as very vocal. He would be the FOURTH captain in a row that was not considered vocal. (Jagr, Drury, Callahan) And YES, being vocal is important. Quiet captains are a one trick pony. Everyone is supposed to perform on the ice. That whole "lead by example on the ice" thing is great, but that can NOT be your only strong point as a captain. You need to know how to motivate by communication, and well.

3.) He's thrown down the mittens like, once (we all know how that turned out). Captains don't have to be great fighters, but there's going to be instances where he's going to need to send a statement that we all need to stick up for one another... Even Boyle could give more inspiration from a fight than Staal.

4.) He's got that whole Carolina factor going on with all three of his other brothers affiliated with the Hurricanes organization.

So where's the logic? Just give him the "C" because he's been on the team a while, has a big last name, and was drafted in the first round? I'm not saying he's a bad player, far from it, but I can't understand why people think he has this level of leadership to him. Maybe he is a general in the locker room, but who the hell would guess that based on what we see from him on the ice? I just don't see it.

I sincerely hope whomever is selected for captain excels, regardless of whomever it is. I'm not rooting against anyone, I'm merely voicing concerns.

I originally voted Mactruck because he is my favorite Ranger but the more I think about it the more I feel like Girardi needs to be captain. Only thing I wish he would do a bit more is stand up for other players if things start getting chippy.

I don't really get the Staal votes though. He is not captain material in my opinion.

With the addition of MSL he would probably be the second best choice after Girardi.

I think it should be Girardi, but the ones that thing it will be Staal, myself included think it because:

-He held an "A" before Girardi did.
-If they were going to name Girardi Captain, I think they would have done it already. I think they're waiting to see if Staal will re-up in the summer. If he does, he gets it, if not, it goes to someone else.

So who do we have who is A) not young and B) willing to throw down the mittens? Obviously Girardi is out since he just stands around while our star players get roughed up. Ok, a little unfair perhaps. Richards? He's gone so that's out. Not sure we really have that kind of leader on the squad at the moment.

For what it's worth Nash has endorsed McD

Q. The Rangers don’t have a captain (with the trade of Ryan Callahan, they have 3 As). Could you be line for another shot at that?

A. (laughs) Oh, no. They have a great defenseman here, Ryan McDonagh. He’s on a long-term deal. He’s one of the best defensemen in the league, one of the hardest guys to play against. I think he’s the leading candidate.

Marc Staal, who is likely IMO to re-up, unless Slats is excessively stupid playing uber-hardball on the dollars.

McD is deserving, but no rush for him, his time is later, perhaps next.

Girardi is wonderful but an expensive luxury we may have to move, presumably with Stepan, for an upgrade, so don't see he is appointed capt even tho he is arguably capt material.

If he's not going to score goals, he should at least keep his mouth shut. Such a stupid thing for him to do. It can only hurt in the locker room. Girardi and Staal don't seem like the types of players to get upset over this, but I could see other potential future captains getting upset that one of their teammates singled someone out to be captain and it wasn't them. The best thing for the players to do is keep their mouths shut on a controversial topic like this.

If McDonagh is the next captain, I'll have no problem with that. The only thing we should hear about this in the media is the eventual announcement from Sather when they make their choice. Its a touchy subject. Its really stupid for the players to be talking about it publicly.

The next question he mentioned that there are a lot of good options from the team but he thinks Ryan should be it.

I also don't think this will cause any sort of trouble in the locker room, if Girardi or Staal were chosen to be the captain and then Nash came out and said oh I think it should have been ____________ that would cause problems

I hear what you are saying. I just don't think players should be talking about this publicly. I don't like the idea of a player endorsing one teammate over another in the press. He did mention that there are a lot of good options, but it could be taken the wrong way by a teammate. It's definitely a hit to a player's confidence to not be the future captain of choice by one of the star players on the team.

Its a subject that the players care a lot about and more than they let on to the public. I don't like the idea of anyone talking about it from the Rangers until a decision is made. I don't think it could lead to anything good. If Nash thinks McDonagh should be the next captain, he should bring that up with Sather and AV, not the media.

I hear that too, idk I don't think it matters to some of the guys cause it is the idea of one player.. its not like sather said it or AV idk hopefully it won't be a negative

I have to say that the play McDonagh made last night in response to the CLB goal and set up the tying goal was a puuuuure captain's move.

Captain, oh Captain

Who should be the Captain and two alternates next season?

IMO:

Captain: MacTruck
A: Nash
A: Staal

On the rise (potential future captains):
Kreider
Brassard

Lol Kreider and Brass will never be captains, or even assistants in my opinion.

Nash shouldn't have an A.

Girard, Staal or McD for captain. The other two get A's. If you need to give one on offense, it should go to Stepan or Zucc, MAYBE Msl.

Agreed. The only players at this moment who deserve a letter are:

McD, G, Staal, Zucc, Stepan and Lundqvist, but a goalie never gets a letter. I never understood why. Just give Lundqvist the A :D
