EDM are in the same position as Quebec / Colorado around the mid-90s.
A young Mats Sundin for an over the hill Wendell Clarke.
Owen Nolan for Sandis Ozolinsh.
The Roy trade, what was it, like Kovalenko and Rucinsky for Roy.
Then a couple of UFA signings.
EDM got all the offensive punch they need upfront and then some, a PPQB but then they have only one relevant top 4 D (Petry). They gotta make the moves they make in the future count.
If you want any of the core young talent they have you gotta give up a piece they really want. Don't think MDZ+ is quite enough, while Staal/McD makes all the sense in the world.
Like I've said for a long time:
1. It's not good asset management to have 4 valuble LDs (Staal, McD, MDZ and Moore).
Outside these guys, we have Falk who can fill in as 6 D and Allen who is pretty close.
Skjei look like a potential 6th (L)D.
2. We could definitely use help up front and on the PP.
3. We really need a PPQB with a right shot and more offensive punch from the blueline.
EDM could potentially be a good trading partner.
Something like:
1. Staal, Boyle and Skjei for Hall and 2nd round pick.
Depthchart:
LW - Hall, Hagelin, Kreider, Miller, Pyatt
C - Stepan, Richards, Brass, Moore, Lindberg
RW - Nash, Cally, Zucc, Dorsett, Fast, Hrivik
LD - McD, MDZ, Moore, Falk, Allen
RD - Stralman, Girardi, McI
2. We deal forwards for a good younger RH PPQB that can grow into the position.
It's not done in October, but I think the above restructuring in principle is what needs to take place.
