Time and time again this core group has shown they are incapable of getting it done when it counts and it is time to move on from some of the pieces. Enough is enough, I don't know what other franchises continues to keep the exact same core year after year and continues to accept failure.
Dubas - Would hope he is brought back as GM because this is his mess, and frankly I do not know who we would replace him with. If he is back, he needs to stop letting his personal devotion or relationships with the core from getting in the way, and actually make some trades to shake up the team. Bargain bin hunting every year during free agency and spending all our assets every year at the TDL for potential rentals is not going to change the fact that this core is incapable of getting it done. He's changed the goalies, the d core, the bottom 6, the top 6 wingers, the coach, the assistant coaches, heck we've even changed our PA announcers and still no shows from the majority of the core.
Keefe - Not opposed to keeping him, but would like to explore what is out there. Someone, who has experience winning in the playoffs and a cup before, that has some authority (excluding Quenneville) or finding our own Brind'amour. Someone that will hold our star players accountable and not coddle them when they play like crap.
Marner - Trade him, time to move on. He cannot handle the pressure of being in Toronto, and we cannot win with a soft winger despite his skillset and defensive play. Him and his team talked a big game during the contract negotiations, and now can't back it up when it counts. His cap space then needs to be used to either for a top pairing RHD, or preferably at least 2 reliable guys for our top 6. Would love to acquire a young player with a lot of potential as part of a package for Marner (kind of similar to the SGA trade for basketball fans, which was a homerun for OKC). Don't know who that player would be.
Matthews - Honestly, would keep him, unless we have any indication that he wants to leave via free agency. Keep Nylander as well.
JT- Our captain that is supposed to lead by example, instead is just dragging us down, just tough to watch out there. Unfortunately, we are stuck with him.
Rielly - Thought he was bad in the regular season, but really stepped his game up when we needed him during the playoffs. That is a true example of a great leader.
Woll - Looked great as well.
I would bring back Sammy, Kampf, Schenn and potentially O'Rielly/Accicari. Also, adding more physicality and proven playoff performers and trading away some of the core should be a point of focus this off season. Would love to go after someone like Bertuzzi, but not sure if he will be too expensive.
