If I'm the GM, I'm sending a memo to the league: Bidding on Matthews & Marner starts now. Best offers by the start of the draft get them. I don't even care about a specific return, just get the best possible value for now. Matthews would probably be a more futures based deal. Marner would be more of a hockey trade, perhaps Philly makes a splash and something around Konecny + Provorov for Marner.

I'm talking to Tavares, and seeing what can be done in terms of a trade. Retain salary if needed. He's had that loser stink ever since he was drafted by the Isles. Maybe to Vancouver in a deal around Miller?

Nylander can stay for now. Might as well try him as a C and see what happens. Talk extension in-season, if his ask is crazy he's gone too.

I'd offer Schenn and ROR fair contracts to stay, along with letters on the front of their jerseys to form the new leadership group with Rielly. If they don't want to stay so be it, I certainly wouldn't blame them.

Unfortunately the UFA market is a barren wasteland. Try to trade for some unwanted players like Seattle has done, and win with depth instead of overpaid floaters. There is a brief window of opportunity with having a starting goalie signed for $800k

Even if this happens, let's just say that Tavares unconditionally waives it because he wants out (whether that's the truth, is a whole different topic). You still need to find a team that wants him on that cap hit for two years.
Toronto would probably have to retain some salary and/or take back expiring contracts.

A lot of people says Toronto should get rid of Tavares.

What's the most realistic way you see for this happening within the next five months?

All they can really do is ask him if he'd be willing to waive his NMC.

You don't.

You know the answer before you ask the question, and the act of asking the question is just incredibly stupid to Tavares and the rest of the league that the team becomes a bit of a pariah.

The guy chose to come to Toronto, and took less money to do so.
His reasons for coming to Toronto haven't changed: home town, favourite team growing up, his wife works at a hospital here, his family is here.

What on Earth would give anyone the impression that he would ever entertain the idea of willingly leaving while having a contract with the team?

Honestly the more I think about it, the more I think they need to rebuild.

This is as good of a lineup as they'll have in the near-future. They've wasted capital so can't really bring in good rentals going forward. Prospect pool isn't as good anymore. Tavares isn't movable for value but the other guys all have value including Matthews.

You keep some guys for leadership or whatever and I think Tavares is one of those guys if not for him slowing down with age but the other guys you get value for, maybe even in this draft with players like Michkov available. m

The Leafs will never be a pariah because they can actually pay their players and offer significant sponsorships as a side hustle. There’s also a significant element of challenge that some guys thrive off of here.

Aside from a hat trick in a blowout and a fluky OT winner where has he been? He’s no longer an elite player - still a first liner but he’s too slow and relies too hard on the PP to get numbers.

Oh his feelings are hurt they asked? f*** you and your feelings. He was supposed to be the piece to put them over the top and what he he done? Maybe they beat Montreal if he doesn’t get taken out eight minutes in and maybe if maybe if maybe if.

He’s a good secondary or tertiary voice in the room but doesn’t have enough fire to be the leader.

The problem here is that you actually have to get Tavares himself to agree that he needs to leave. It's not enough that everyone else thinks so.

Tavares would be the first to go but he's got contractual NMC's that you can't mess with. Unless he plays ball, which he probably won't.
Then force him for the good of the team and promise to sign him back in two years.

I agree with you - and that’s the mistake the Islanders made; they had two years to ask him and they teased and skirted around it and blame him for leaving their trash franchise.

What do you have to lose by asking, even if he says no? A line in the sand will be drawn and if he leaves when his deal is up he leaves and if not give him 2x6 or something.

There is no way Dubas or any GMs will trade AM, MM, Willie and Reilly before trading JT, unless it is a ridiculous package.

Dubas or not new GM needs to talk to JT and convince him, he is the odd man out and lets part ways professionally. These players got more pride than we think and if they feel unwanted, they won’t stick around. At least I hope.

Tavares hasn't been wanted for about 4 or 5 years now LOL this is garbage if he'd leave, he would, but he won't so f*** him

Never trade your elite 1C.

Trade Marner for futures as trade chips. He'd get at least a 1st +++, flip a second to Vancouver for Boeser, use the rest to upgrade the D.

There are some real Nylander haters ever since the hold out so I'm not surprised with him getting votes, Rielly getting any votes is just baffling.

If Nylander resigns under $10M I hope he's kept. The $10M+ choke job group can all gtfo.
How funny is it that the one player we play hardball with, we underpay him and overpay everyone else.

Nylander or Marner to Detroit. If Leafs management is smart they trade Marner and keep Nylander, but are they smart? Marner clearly can't handle the media hell, dude is shaking like a leaf(no pun intended). In Detroit he would only have to survive Helena St. James and Art Regner, asking for his favourite colour and Marner would be able to stay close to home. Nylander would be a great fit too, for Swede's it's like going to home.

Detroit right now is too good for being a bottom-5 team and not good enough for playoff spot hunt and this draft lottery thing isn't working in our favor. Top tier players has to be acquired via trade then.

Untouchables are:
Larkin
Raymond
Rasmussen
Kasper
Mazur
Söderblom
Lombardi
Seider
Edvinsson
Walman
Wallinder
Cossa

If we keep Marner over Nylander, I hope Leaf fans riot.

Imagine trading the guy who has been the best playoff performer and keeping the worst playoff performer.
