I think the key factor is the income. I wouldn't want to live in the US as a middle class citizen, or heck even upper middle class. Certainly not if I was even lower then middle class. Canada is the far superior country for your average person.

But if I were extremely wealthy, I think the US would be the better spot to live. Mostly climate driven for me personally, taxes matter in a few select cases as well.

As someone living about an hour North of Edmonton right now I absolutely f***ing hate the cold winters and first chance I get if I was in the NHL I'd be headed somewhere more south. Not to mention just how shitty of a city Edmonton is inpar

The reason I would have Toronto/Montreal on my ntc would be more about the media and the fans.
I'd be interested to hear your reasons why the "average person" would prefer to live in Canada over the United States.

It's folks looking at numbers in the aggregate for an area as opposed to where players actually live. Players for Los Angeles usually end up living by their practice facility in Manhattan Beach (very safe) as opposed to Da'Hood in Compton. Players for Vegas live in Summerlin by their practice facility, which is also very safe, and not North Las Vegas which is rough in some areas. Players for Anaheim mostly live in Newport Beach, where nearly all the crime is financial, or Irvine (very safe) near their practice facility, not Anaheim itself which has issues. To take a more extreme example, a Blackhawks player isn't living on the South Side of Chicago but probably has lakefront condo in a very safe neighborhood, nor is a Blues players living in East St. Louis.

And so forth and so on, which makes so many of these "high crime" comments so totally ridiculous.
I have never been to LA or LV but I used to live in South Florida, and it's a lot like you describe. Star Island, Fisher Island, for example? You're not even talking about the 1%, it's more like the 1% of the 1%. Opa Locka/Miami Gardens/North Miami? You go outside at night, you might not make it back.

NHL players are going to live in very high income areas. Those areas tend to be very safe regardless of the status of some communities nearby.

Don’t take it as a slight, just some prefer Canada, everyone has their own reasons.
Some families will cite mass shootings at schools or shopping areas as one reason, everyone has different reasons.

I didn't take it as a slight. I was curious as to that poster's rationale. Of course this country has serious issues. Most do.

1. Canada with maybe exception of Vancouver.
2. Metro
3. California
4. Columbus
5. St. Louise
6. Chicago
7. Pittsburgh
8. Boston
9. Washington
^ People left all these communist locations, no point of playing there and living.

I would play for the Trashers if they were back.

I'll give a solid 10... Might hurt some feelin's, but it's all based on my personality and penchant toward hating the media.

1. Toronto - I don't want to be anywhere near that level of media attention.
2. Montreal - I speak some French, but damn, that media x2, no thanks, at least its in two languages to be "quaint"
3. Edmonton - See Toronto, only lesser
4. Vancouver - See above, and I like the Canucks... but no.
5. Dallas - I've been there. No thanks.
6. Florida - I'm not a big fan of any part of Florida, but the Miami Suburbs are a "no thanks" from me. money or not.
7. Winnipeg - It's just not terribly appealing of a place to live for me. No mountains, no salt water, etc.
8. New York Rangers - Too urban for my taste.
9. Columbus - See Winnipeg, but with better weather
10. Washington - I despise politics. This is a bad place for me to even visit.
It's funny how you specify Dallas when Texas has only one team and don't specify which Florida team you're thinking of. BTW, are Rongos more urban than Isles?

Winnipeg - winter weather
Edmonton - winter weather
Arizona.- arena/ownership
Ottawa - winter weather/ team issues
Dallas - don't want to live in a parking lot (like Texas just fine though)

In no order

1. Rangers - f*** that media circus
2. Leafs - same reason
3. Canucks - same reason and they're a mess. I wouldn't play there til they had new ownership
4. Canadiens - same reasons as all the other 3 but this time in two languages
5. Coyotes - biggest trainwreck in the league but would have no problem otherwise
6. Bruins - Jesus Christ no. Just no
7. Flyers - only Arizona is more dysfunctional. Would have no problem otherwise
8. Blackhawks - I have no respect for them. None. Maybe Bedard can wipe the stink from their ass

That is probably about it. People doing the whole "omg Winnipeg and Edmonton are cold and boring" thing forget you can literally leave whenever you want for as long as you want all summer long and you're gone 41 games a year at minimum.

Bag yourself a wife and kids and you're gonna go to the zoo, the movies, shopping, playing Fortnite and going to the CFL games they DO have not the big baller clubs that they apparently don't have. And! Need I stress. You. Can. Go. On. Vacations. All. Summer. Long

So what it's cold? It's cold everywhere. Big freaking deal.

This thread shows why Canadian teams are so handcuffed. Why would anyone choose Toronto or Edmonton or Winnipeg over Tampa or LA or NYC or Vegas?

I imagine most NHL players, even Canadians, would have all of Canada + Buffalo + Detroit on their 10 team list. The last one is probably just coast related, or maybe ARI.
Tampa is kind of a wasteland but sure

If I was talented enough to have such a list, I'd probably go with the following:

1. Coyotes - Train wreck, and that heat is miserable.

2. VGK - Too hot and I've been to Vegas many times for work, never had I thoroughly enjoyed it.

3. Florida Panthers - Too hot

4. Stars - Hard no to anything Texas.

and the 5th is hard for me to think of. I have never been to Winnipeg, Calgary, or Edmonton in the winter, so that I cannot speak up. Plus, playing in front of die hard fans like Canadians wouldn't be the worst.

Maybe the Hurricanes..? I enjoy Raleigh as a city, but each time I've been there I have had bad experiences with their fan base. I seem to always find the entitled ass holes there.

I don’t like Miami. Tampa is fine which is why it’s not on my list, but I’m not a super big fan, would probably be on my 15 team list. Florida the team, not the state. It’s not a bad place, but it’s not for me. Been there a dozen times, but ultimately I’m a mountain guy.

The islanders play in the safest county in America...

NYI - crime? Lol stick to talking about Canada brother

The crime reason for Long Island is sending me:laugh:

Lol yup okay I am wrong here… I just looked up the arena and it just seemed so close to NYC so I made the assumption it had a similar vibe. Goes to show the assumptions people make based on generalization of areas (ie. Canada = cold and desolate) can be very false.

The arena itself is in an iffy area but the arena is right off the highway so the guys don’t really see that neighborhood as much. The practice facility however is built within a county park (long story how they pulled that one off) and in a decent neighborhood plus about 5-10 drive from a ton of decent stores. Most players live in Garden City or further up towards the north shore of Nassau County where big money is. It’s actually pretty solid for the players since the Islanders are like the 8th most known local team between the 4 major sports so people have no idea who the players are unless you follow hockey.

Hats off to you for admitting the mistake - you dont get that too often on the internet :thumbu:

It’s definitely not cold everywhere lol

Toronto
Winnipeg
Edmonton
Calgary
Vancouver
Seattle
Philadelphia
Buffalo
Columbus
Minnesota

In no particular order

LA
Anaheim
San Jose
Chicago
New York
New Jersey
Detroit
Washington
Arizona
Buffalo

Nothing to do with the teams but I would have zero interest living in any of these cities
you don't have to live IN the cities. Seriously doubt any of the Devils live IN Newark. Some Rangers live in Manhattan, many live in Westchester.

Just curious- think it could be kinda fun if people don’t take it personally. Let people have their opinions, let’s not turn this into a back-and-forth battle. So, if you were a super talented NHLer and got either a 5 or 10 nmc list, who’d be on it for this season?

For me:

5) Montreal. Media, pressure.
4) Toronto. Same as above.
3) Calgary. Directionless, disorganized.
2) Philadelphia. Same as above.
1) Winnipeg. Same as above.
This list matches mine. Add Buffalo.
