you don't have to live IN the cities. Seriously doubt any of the Devils live IN Newark. Some Rangers live in Manhattan, many live in Westchester.
True but honestly I don’t even want to visit these cities anymore. The people are insane, the crime is getting ridiculous in most of them and the people running these cities are just out to lunch at this point….

In no order

1. Rangers - f*** that media circus
2. Leafs - same reason
3. Canucks - same reason and they're a mess. I wouldn't play there til they had new ownership
4. Canadiens - same reasons as all the other 3 but this time in two languages
5. Coyotes - biggest trainwreck in the league but would have no problem otherwise
6. Bruins - Jesus Christ no. Just no
7. Flyers - only Arizona is more dysfunctional. Would have no problem otherwise
8. Blackhawks - I have no respect for them. None. Maybe Bedard can wipe the stink from their ass

That is probably about it. People doing the whole "omg Winnipeg and Edmonton are cold and boring" thing forget you can literally leave whenever you want for as long as you want all summer long and you're gone 41 games a year at minimum.

Bag yourself a wife and kids and you're gonna go to the zoo, the movies, shopping, playing Fortnite and going to the CFL games they DO have not the big baller clubs that they apparently don't have. And! Need I stress. You. Can. Go. On. Vacations. All. Summer. Long

So what it's cold? It's cold everywhere. Big freaking deal.
Rangers media is very different than the Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Giants, and Jets.

Honestly, only team I would have is Arizona and only because of the uncerainty of their situation. Taxes and cost of living won't bother me. I live in NYC now (not in Manhattan). My wife and I combined do not make as much as anyone in the NHL and I am living very comfortably. I think anyone picking a city for political reasons is being very naive. NYC as a whole is very left leaning, but I still see PLENTY of Trump flags and hats on a daily basis. Crime? You will be making enough money to live in a VERY safe neighborhood and even a gated community. Then again, Mike Hampton did claim part of the reason he went to Colorado was for the great public schools. RIIIIIIIGHT......

Reality is I could probably come up with a reason for every team to not go.

Montreal-- I would spend too much money on St Catherine's street and gain 100 pounds from the Poutine and smoked meat at Schwartz's.

Panthers- don't want my kids to get eaten by an alligator.

ducks- too close to disneyland and my kids will bother me to go everyday.

Kraken- too much rain

Golden Knights- too many prostitiutes

Leafs- toronto is too expensive

red wings- too close to windsor

I could go on.

Could have just said

Any team in USA - don't want my kids shot
Any team in Canada - too cold or too wet

We will definitely disagree on this one. The numbers and the businesses leaving these cities because of it say the opposite and when I’ve visited these places it’s worse every time
I mean, you're incentivised to be homeless in California and it's working!! Otherwise, Chicago seems not great but Manhattan is surprisingly decent if not over taxed. No NHLers are living in the hood though. Seems like young guys tend to live in nicer apartments downtown but when you get to your 2nd and 3rd contracts, maybe get hitched and have a few pups, you buy a big house that poor people aren't allowed to come near.

1. Winnipeg Jets: No offence to anybody who lives there, but I am not spending half of the year in Siberia.

2. Vancouver Canucks: I despise their owner where I would pull an Eric Lindrois and never want to play for him.

3. Edmonton Oilers: Like Winnipeg, I don't want to spend half of the year in a refrigerator's freezer. I also do not like their owner.

4. Detroit Red Wings: Not a fan of the city.

5. St. Louis Blues: Not a fan of the city, all my friends call the state "missery" for a reason.

I would be open to any other place.

They’re not leaving because of crime. They’re leaving because of high taxes and corporations don’t like paying them

Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton are the top 3 for me just based on weather and location. Beyond those, it would probably depend upon the current status of the franchise at any given time or proximity to family.

A lot leave because of crime. One robbery of a high end store like a smash and grab can basically end a business. those happen in big cities. Large retail stores like walgreens and target are closing in a lot of big cities like San Francisco and Portland because they are operating at a loss because of theft. You see basic necessities chained up like something out of an Orwell story.

That said, the average person isn't in in danger in most big cities. Especially not NHL players with where they'd be living, they wouldn't be living in the hood.

Still you never know, there are stories everyday of innocent people getting caught in crossfire and random attacks.

I wouldn't live anywhere within the limits of a big city personally if I was rich, i like my space and doing outdoor stuff

They’re leaving for both reason. For an example companies in Chicago and California have come out and said they just can’t afford the massive increases in theft and just can’t stay anymore

What's the incentive to be homeless in California?

They're paying people. Maybe I'm wrong and someone with a better understanding can correct me. Article says $520 a month, just to be homeless. It's a beautiful state but I'm not sure their public policies will allow it to continue to be a financial juggernaut.

Took down the article but I've read anywhere from $500 to $620 monthly.

Is that not just another social safety net program?

You made it sound like these people would not get this money if they were not homeless.

That's like saying unemployment benefits are just a reason not to work. It's not a great life.

Edit: After going through this, I am so annoyed with you. I know you didn't take a second of your time to understand any of this data.

A link to a 2019 thread on a forum called "Hacker News" that points to data you could have referenced directly. Come on man.

Just sounds like welfare money basically.
Hope you didn’t send me to some , phishing site, called hacker news.

Winnipeg
Columbus
Carolina
Minnesota
Detroit

I'm okay with Edmonton and Calgary because it's close to home, pretty much 1 hour flight to Vancouver. Cool with Buffalo because it's next to Toronto and I got family there too.

The weather thing is the biggest factor to me. Trust me, Winnipeg gets BAD in the summer (especially after Covid). We have tent cities pop up all over the place but Winter ends all of that. People don't have the option to be stationary. No one is paying them to stay homeless though.
I live in a place so mild we don't even have seasons (it hasn't surpassed 70 this entire month, while much of the rest of the world is suffering under crippling heat, and our record low is just barely under the freezing point), and every winter we still have unhoused people die of the cold (because we just don't build enough shelters). I couldn't even imagine what would happen in a place that actually has Real Winter.

San Francisco is its own place, of course, and I can't imagine anyone playing for the Sharks and living there, simply because you'd be an hour away and living in a much more expensive city than the one you'd be based in, which offers 90% of the amenities anyway (and the rest are only an hour away). Whatever San Francisco is doing is completely irrelevant to someone living in Los Gatos or Foster City (and the myth of San Francisco is far worse than the reality, anyway).

The biggest quality of life issue I have with San Jose is the traffic (and the summer heat, which most people here would probably laugh at, but as I noted, I am extraordinarily privileged to be able to live where I do). For NHL players, that's going to be a minor issue (and one that's likely true no matter what team you're playing for).

all Cali Teams and New York ...insane crime being the reason
List insane crime. Ignore's places with actual high violent-crime rates like Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville, Detroit, and Philadelphia. Stop reading sensationalist news and look at actual crime rates. NYC, LA and San Jose are lower than many other American NHL teams.
