He doesn’t get paid to just put up points. He’s a 1C, ok defensively and the captains of the team. Is he a little overpaid? Sure he is. I’d rather have an overpaid 1C than a scrub like Lucic etc…

why do people keep bringing up he's the C ? the only reason Dubas/Shanny handed him the captaincy is it was the pc thing to do after AM dropped his pants since it not like the team looks up to him

and he's not a little overpaid , he's millions overpaid and his signing destroyed the Leafs
 
TSN ranked Taveras as the 40th best skater in the NHL as of 6 October 2021. How did his value decline so rapidly?

7 lol. Ppg players aren’t paid 7 bud. Sorry. Not unless they’re on a bridge deal or an elc. Suzuki has never even gotten 60 points over a full season, let alone being a ppg player for 8? Years, and he just got 7.875 x 8.

Do better.

Since joining the Leafs, he's 12th in scoring overall among all centers in the league. 4 points back of Zibanejad and 6 points back of Point. None of the 11C that produced more than him have signed for under 8.4M in the last 3 years.

Are Point and Zibby also 2.5M and 1.5M overpaid, with the bar set at 7M ? Or is that 4-6 points gap they have worth the extra salary they are being paid ? Not to mention the tax break Point gets, being in Florida.

because he is the captain. Is there any proof that they were going to hand the captaincy over to Matthews? Doubt it.

On the open market I don’t think he’d have a problem getting 9.5-10 million, today.

How much do you think he should get paid?
 
Acquiring Tavares was a well known foreseeable bad idea. He was extremely overhyped, over paid and seriously underperformed in every metric expected .

Trying to load up a team with superstars isn't a recipe for winning a championship. You need clutch players, character and guys who will be team players.

He literally set a career high playing in Toronto and has maintained his career average thus far, but sure "under performed in every metric"

hey bud we're discussing the player he is today which is not a ppg player , his production as well as his overall game has declined since his first season with us

on the open market anything can happen since it just takes one incompetent/desperate GM to offer a n absurd contract but even then i doubt he gets anywhere near 10

people have to be in serious denial if they can't see how limited his game has become

How many eastern conference finals or stanley cups did his signing help bring to Toronto ZERO . How many games or series did he single handedly win to propel the leafs forward ZERO. He was the captain in long Island apparently he doesn't poses strong leadership ability

what does it matter what a player did 3 seasons ago ?

JT can't keep up with the flow of the game anymore , all he has left is being good on draws and vulturing around the net , i know the truth hurts but denying them doesn't make little Yanni Pj's a better player .

These are the same posters who get offended when labelled as leafs haters

Nobody was even talking about Stanley cups :laugh: If that's your only measure for how good/bad a player is, about 80% of the league is shit and not worth their contract
