Where are McDavid and Draisaitl when it matters?

I would put James the real deal Neal and stick him on McDavids wing tomorrow. He's washed up but he has a cup and the playoff experience going deep and winning. I bet you $100 he's back in the line up tomorrow.

When did Neal win a cup?

If you’re taking up 12 mill a year in salary cap, you better be able to produce in the playoffs without a top 5 player riding shotgun with you.

Maybe the ‘depth’ would be improved if Drai could do his thing on the 2nd line without causing McDavid to ghost.

all of those players are significantly better then the oiler one with the exception of mcd/drai. pens also had bill guerin and sykora and a bunch of other role players who score ~30 points. you have to be insane to think the oilers roster is close to the 2009 penguins.

How much of the additional "depth" is due to the fact Crosby and Malkin played on separate lines and helped boost those middling wingers' totals? Edmonton keeps insisting on stacking McDavid and Draisaitl, so of course their depth guys who don't play with them will produce less than the depth guys on the Pens.

I honestly believe that's a huge issue with the Oilers and their lack of depth. Instead of splitting McDavid and Draisaitl up to give them two lines who can produce, they stack one line to pile up points and leave the rest of the roster to look like crap. How many Cups do the Pens win if they did the same thing and played Crosby and Malkin together, then hoped that the likes of Talbot, Sykora, Fedotenko, etc. could carry the second and third line?

Smith is weird. Always looks good, stats are decent, makes remarkable saves but always looks like the 2nd best goalie out there in the playoffs (his series against the Avs was pretty meh). He's definitely not the reason why the Oilers are losing, but the guy on the other end has been better.

Sorry it’s not related to your post. But I love your username.

As a long-time Canucks fan, this current Oilers team is reminding me of 2001 to 2003 Canucks
Naslund Bertuzzi was the best line in the league... the Canucks were a good team but kind of labelled as a one-line team. Morrison put up 70 points, the comparison here would be like RNH. The difference here is the depth though
This Oilers team is even MORE top heavy. McDavid and Drai are the best in the league.....but the Oilers really don't have much beyond their three top6 forwards.
The Canucks at least had Cassels good for 50 pts. Henrik Sedin, brother Daniel Sedin putting up 40 points each. Cooke and Linden were good for 40 points each and solid two-way play.
Both teams had/have questionable goaltending. I just see a lot of similarities... and the Canucks couldn't win the cup with that lineup.

I just don't know if a really top heavy type team build is good enough to go all the way. Maybe you can do it if you have a top top goalie.

The Pens won with Malkin / Crosby but they had really good depth.

how much cap space do they have?. some decent UFA's this year....

Whoa, might want to pump the brakes there......the Sedins led their team to Game 7 of the Cup final.

Gonna be a while before McJesus and Drai lug Edmonton's bloated carcass anywhere close to that.

If you want to compare McDavid and Drai playoff success, you compare them to Monahan and Gaudreau. Yes i know it hurts but that's what it has come down to.

Lol as a Flames fan, did you forget Neal against the Aves?

The dude is not just washed up, he is also a quitter

Neal thinks he's still a legit top sniper and hence why he quit on the Flames because he demanded top 6 minutes and he wasn't getting it.

Drai was good, McDavid? A couple of secondary assists(that would never exist if not for Drai) and a vanishing act. Hey I am sure(yes really) that he will turn it around but he looked far from great today.

Still believe Oilers need to split them up in the future and I hope they try it in game 4.

It definitely wasn't a performance worthy of McDavid's regular season reputation. But, I thought he was generating a good amount of chances compared to games 1 and 2. Perhaps, you are right and it was more due to Drai's performance.

I think the real shocker for me is how he wilted under pressure. First the unacceptable turnover and then a complete no-show from that point on.

That can't be happening with a player of his caliber.

You can shovel this entire thread into the trash.
Look at the oilers bottom 9 and D. And geriatric goalie.
Isn't part of the problem that you are referring to the other forwards on the team "the bottom 9"? These are two top of the NHL players, they can't help the awful depth with their elite skill by being on separate lines?

I honestly think McDavid is the Mike Trout of hockey, just a generational player stuck on a brutal team.

Clearly can't do it on his own - no one can. Team management just completely ****ting the bed, same old story for Edmonton.

But hey, at least all that individual hardware sure looks nifty!
