Where are McDavid and Draisaitl when it matters?

Judging by this playoffs I am starting to believe the reason why the coach keep putting Drai+McDavid together is that McDavid, not Draistaitl, is the one who can't drive a line of his own.

McDavid and Draisaitl certainly need to work on their overall games. Yea Crosby wasn't elite defensively when young but he wasn't a liability.

That said the team's performance is a gm issue. The roster is terrible outside 3 or 4 players.

McDrai can't be absolved.

They were the whole reason why everyone thought they'd win the series, so the losing in such stunning fashion has to also be owned in large part by them.

So what does Edmonton do next?

Anyone else kind of at a loss as to where to start? I'd genuinely like to see Edmonton surround these two players with enough to win.

all of those players are significantly better then the oiler one with the exception of mcd/drai. pens also had bill guerin and sykora and a bunch of other role players who score ~30 points. you have to be insane to think the oilers roster is close to the 2009 penguins.
Agree, I think some pens fans want to downplay the rest of the roster to make Crosby/Malkin look better. Crosby/Malkin were spectacular and yea they didn't have other gamebreakers but the support was competent at least. Oilers outside maybe 4 or 5 players are ahl quality.

Start with getting a new GM who has a more modern mindset. Holland is not the guy who's going to fix this Oilers team.

Ownership has made so many bad decisions. They had a chance at a restart after the Chia damage but they went with two dinosaurs in Holland/Tippett. Game passed them by a long time ago. They needed someone with bold vision for the new nhl. Holland would be more suited for a good veteran team that needs slight tweaking.

They were actually good today.

Their game fell apart a tad after it went 4-3 but nothing crazy. Before that, they were doing well and created quite a few chances for Edmonton.

The team around them is just depressing though.

What do they do next? Come back and win.

Even down 0-3 - Oilers were such big favorites going into this matchup, they should still be able to win

Oilers won last 4 regular season games between both teams, outscoring them 16-4

Outside the obvious 2, also McLeod and Pulijarvi. I'm ok with anybody being available. RNH has played himself out of a good payday with the Oilers I feel, he's had flashes but just looked off this year.

Drai was good, McDavid? A couple of secondary assists(that would never exist if not for Drai) and a vanishing act. Hey I am sure(yes really) that he will turn it around but he looked far from great today.

Still believe Oilers need to split them up in the future and I hope they try it in game 4.

And it woke Winnipeg up and the Oilers weren't ready for them.

I would put James the real deal Neal and stick him on McDavids wing tomorrow. He's washed up but he has a cup and the playoff experience going deep and winning. I bet you $100 he's back in the line up tomorrow.

What I'm talking about is investing in players who are more than just regular season highlight generators. Best players in the game right now (by popular opinion) have done bupkis in the post season when it actually counts.

Learn to cut your losses and move on.

There a plenty of top players who have and who continue to perform in the postseason. MacKinnon, Kucherov, Pasternak, etc.
