Where are McDavid and Draisaitl when it matters?

Oilers have none, you can have the two best players in the world all you want but in a 7 game series you need others to pull up.

you still need at least one standout

Remember those Wild teams that had depth but never made a dent beyond a few first round upsets?

Im sorry but to me the Wild were never contenders, even when they had ‘depth’.

The only time Minnesota gave a shit is when they had Marion Gaborik, Andrew Brunette, Richard Park, over the hill Cliff Ronning and Darby f***ing Hendrickson

There isn't a single NHL GM who wouldn't trade any one of their nhl players with their current cap hit for McDavid and his. So don't talk nonsense.

Well let them do so. I'd rather have a guy like MacKinnon. Gamer on every shift, produces points, plays an intense game, leads. Half the price of McDisappearing. HALF.

It's great that McDavid is blessed with so much talent. But if you are going to eat that much cap, you need to show up when it counts. Especially when you are also team captain.

A funny thing regarding stats,

if McDavid gets 2 points in the next game and Edmonton still loses, some people look at scoring and points and say ”over ppg player, he played great” (which he did, but only in two games). Consistency matters the most in these games.

This won't matter. By this time next year McDavid will have over 700 career points, his 4rth Art Ross, 3rd Hart and 3rd Lindsay.

But no cup? I’d say he’d personally want that the most.
I agree. It was cool seeing him hit 100 in the shortened season this year but I could care less about trophies from here on. It’s about the playoffs now and he has choked badly in the big moments. Gave the puck away tonight on the game tieing goal which effectively ended the series. The oilers are 1-5 in playoff OT games with Mcdavid he just doesn’t rise to the occasion in these moments.

Cup is a coin flip and reflects his managements ability to put together a 23 player team while getting lucky breaks along the way. You're gonna inevitably have a few plugs win the cup this year that won't be in the NHL a couple years from now. Might as well gauge your worth by whether you win the lottery or not

a honest question and I could do research, but how many of these generationals have a cup? All of them? Crosby, Lemieux, Gretzky, Bossy, Orr, B.Hull ...

it might be a requirement to have SC to truly become generational? The skill is there thought.

You just had Patrick Maroon win back to back cups and in all likelihood about to win 3 cups in a row. Maroon played side by side with McDavid for a couple of years, truly a giant among hockey players :sarcasm:

McDavid is a PPG player in his career in the playoffs

take MacKinnon because hes half the cap, fine; but theres no need to play it off like McDavid is some no show

Maroon might have the leadership and maybe physique even but he’s only missing the talent and skill to become generational.

I forgot
McExcuse

Probably should add in McLoser

Calling McDavid a loser tells something about the poster - not McDavid. Even if you don't like him as a player or argue he's overrated. It's not a single player who wins a stanley cup. It's the franchise. And boy, the Oilers are one good example of a badly managed franchise. Somehow sad, somehow wonderfully entertaining.

Yeah, and two of his assists last night were plays anyone could've gotten. He made a good play on the first assist, and than a blantant turnover followed by a screen of his own netminder and so the game was tied ...

Edmonton probably wins this game with a better team around McDavid. I'm not denying he's the most talented player in the world. But it's because of plays like that turnover in that situation, that makes me wonder who I want when it really matters.

What McDavid did in the regular season was sick. No one else could match those point totals. But it's my belief that the regular season and the playoffs are almost two different leagues entirely. For example, I think a lot of 90 point players could be 100-110 point players, if they truly cared enough about the regular season.

McDavid does whatever he wants in the regular season, because he is chasing points and because other teams don't defend him like they should. In the playoffs, the opposition is simply much more concentrated and don't give him constant breakaways and odd man rushes.

But it's not just McDavid. The Oilers, in general, doesn't know how to play defense.

McDavid is too predictable. It's amazing how he can make plays at twice the speed of other guys, but he never slows the play down or opts to make a physical play.

I get that McDavid hasn't had a lot of help, but he could be a lot better. He relies on his main trick (his speed) way too much. Draisaitl has consistently looked much better in this series. Puljujaarvi, Nurse and Yamamoto have all looked good, so it's not literally a two-man show.

I still feel uncomfortable with these threads before the series is over though. The Oilers have won 4 straight against the Jets already this year.
When the games tighten up, Draisaitls skill set thrives, not McDavids.

Yeah those retired players and the one on his mid thirties all have cups. Luckily for McDavid he's 24 years old so he has quite a lot of time to get his.

Must be great when you're the best player in the world and you carry your godawful team from night to night but if you can't win games all by yourself in the playoffs when the main focus of your opposition is to shut you down then IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT.

Yes, its entirely Mcdavids fault he got shutdown for two games in a row.

all of those players are significantly better then the oiler one with the exception of mcd/drai. pens also had bill guerin and sykora and a bunch of other role players who score ~30 points. you have to be insane to think the oilers roster is close to the 2009 penguins.

That poster was talking about the 07-08 Pens (Hossa), which lost in the cup finals, not the 08-09 Pens that won the cup. Guerin joined the winning year.
