Domi probably isn't getting 4.5 from anybody
Ok... you might be right... but he did make 3 million per on his last contract and is in line for a raise for sure imho

Any of the dummies who "cleverly" left a laugh emoji on my previous post care to elaborate why exactly? maybe it is funny but I was just wondering which part was most funniest??

The contract is probably insured so the team taking the contract probably wouldn't be paying out anything. It would help get them to the cap floor. I do think we see a deal around this as well and he's moved to Arizona or something.
That is a good point so even the $2 mil balace in Real $$ might be covered.

I was looking into his contract and thought if Treliving wanted to make his life easier and 100% be comfortable spending Muzz $5.6 mil on a new replacement this summer then he would include that contract in trade..

Last year the Leafs got screwed because Muzzin showed up for camp, passed his physical and then started the season on the roster but only lasted 4 games.. However by then the damage was done, even though Leafs could place him on LTIR thereafter who did they have to utilize the $5.6 mil on at that point in time as his cap equivalent replacement? So for sake of clarity this summer it would be wise even though it might turn out Muzzin misses the entire year, to simply remove it from the equation altogether,

He is not resigning with canes .. so they have to get something for him .. brodie gets them a replacement at lower cost and a prospect .. Tree's plan is a huge upgrade on our D corp .. this is only 1st move .. rumours flying everywhere Gio is retiring .. and he does not like Timmer or Lily either .. i think another poster mentioned it could be an entirely new D corps except Rielly and Schenner .. lots more to come this summer i suspect
There’s no question he needs to upgrade the entire D, but they have a small amount of resources to do it.

Brodie also has one year left , is older, has a higher AAV and is owed $7.5 million next year. That doesn’t seem to fit Carolina’s MO.

Why on earth would BT care about the opinions of TV analysts?
When players of their ilk are all saying the same thing about the leafs, it might not be a bad idea to hear what they have to say or at least have your ears perk up. I mean its not like those names have had any success in this league or anything.....

I might be mistaken but I thought those rumours were squashed and gio had said he did plan on playing next year?

He is going to load up our D core and make it much tougher to take our net .. our CAP is going to D next season .. will be a bunch of rooks on 3rd and 4th lines which is fine .. it is da only strategy which has not been tried with this core .. gotta give da media da last angle to talk about .. Hanifin would help as would Pesce .. both much better than Brodie

I think he will focus on D too.. What makes sense to me may not make sense to someone else.

  • I think Brodie is still a legit NHL defender but at 5 mil, he may not be what we need for that tag. I think he is traded
  • I think Gio is the perfect guy for 7th dman, he simply ran out of steam with a month to go. If he plays around 40 games, he will be the perfect #7. Some of the talking heads say he is going to retire.
  • Timmins is an interesting case, I think he did a pretty damn good job at driving offence with limited opportunity but was a hot mess when played higher in the lineup. He can if protected be a d-man who drives offence.
  • I think Lilly might be traded in a package, he has a little bit of sandpaper and I think in the right environment can be an excellent #4 or #5 dman. He seems to be more of a do and learn guy than a guy with natural god given instincts, I think Lilly continues to get better with age. Keefe scratched him in the playoffs, kinda shows that Keefe or the team does not think he is the answer. Which is why I think he is going to be traded.
  • Rielly,? Will the real Morgan Rielly please stand up, please stand up? Was it the injury ? Was it his new marital status? Is he just not that good defender we all think he is? I think $7.5 mil is a good contract for the team, I doubt he goes anywhere, I think he has a bounce back next season.
  • McCabe the guy has some warts but at $2 mil cap hit, that is great value for what he brings.
If you buyout Murray, move Brodie & Lily, the roster looks like:

OPEN - Matthews - Marner
OPEN - Tavares - Nylander
OPEN - OPEN - Jarnkrok
OPEN - Lafferty- OPEN

Rielly - (UFA - Graves)
McCabe - (UFA - Cole)
Open- Timmins

Gives us around $26 mil in cap space.

Do GM's ever win a Cup for the first time or is every cup win won by a GM who has won it before?

It was a factor but not all of the reasons for failure in 2nd round. We have to be proud/happy that we got out of the 1st round now it means we are capable of more in the playoffs. Think next season we might be able to get through 2nd round. We need to bring back O'Reilly +
Acciari and upgrade with defensively d-man. O'Reilly is the key we need for deep playoff run.

Insider Believes Another Pending UFA Will End Up Pricing Himself Out Of Toronto

TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button believes another one of Toronto's pending UFAs could end up pricing himself out of the city.

Button thinks Ryan O'Reilly should be able to fetch a three-year contract on the open market with a cap hit of around $5.5 million. Could this be too rich to keep him in the blue and white long-term?

The 32 year old Clinton Ontario native enjoyed his time with the Leafs, scoring 4 goals and 11 points in 13 regular season games and 3 goals and 9 points in 11 playoff games.

After having a bit of a down year before the trade, O'Reilly reminded the league just how useful he can still be. O'Reilly's greatest gift is his ability to play in all situations. He has great offensive instincts but is also very defensively aware which makes him a valuable asset on the penalty kill. Head coach Sheldon Keefe relied heavily on O'Reilly in the playoffs. He was third among forwards in ice time with 19:49. Only superstars Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner played more.

Brad Treliving may overhaul this part of the Leafs roster

The Toronto Maple Leafs have had quite the off-season so far when it comes to front office reconstruction and with a new general manger comes new ideas. One of which would be a different take on how to construct their roster, specifically their back end.

According to the Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, Leafs new general manager Brad Treliving may want to overhaul, Toronto's back end; take a look.

While most of this interview was centred around the impending Matthews' contract talks, Pagnotta did mention an area of concern to be the defence.

Treliving is no stranger to going out and restructuring a defensive corps, he did it in Calgary, it wouldn't be surprising to see him do it in Toronto as well. Bringing in names like Noah Hanafin, Dougie Hamilton and Nikita Zadorov among others during his time in Calgary.

It'll be interesting to see how Treliving puts his mark on the roster, he certainly has a lot to do if he wants to make this team more competitive

I think the changes coming to the Leafs , we will know about them right after the NBA draft. I imagine Trelivng was possibly instructed not to take the spot light away from the Raptors.

Well Rielly looked like team captain to me in playoffs .. vet D really you can't judge them based on regular season performance because it means very little to them especially when they have their contract .. Rielly played like a #1 in playoffs and to me that is all that counts .. you can't ask for any more from Rielly and Schenner they were perfect compliments to each other .. only thing i know is Shanny will keep Schenner and Schenner i think wants to stay .. now we got to get a partner for McCabe which is why i think Pesce is da right guy for us as a 2nd pair D man who compliments McCabe who plays rough .. 3rd pair likely will be a big nasty pair i suspect but at minimum 1 big nasty .. maybe they keep one of Lily or Timmer .. if they do keep 1 i would keep Lily but thats just me

Muzzy is done as a hockey player .. i heave heard it from 3 different sources including my son who knows his uncle son really well like bbq in woodstock 2 weekends ago well .. he has also sold his condo a few weeks ago with a Sotheby's agent i know too next to leafs practice rink .. he will play out season on LTIR and then retire sometime in 2024 in a nice ceremony with leafs
Heard the same thing at a wedding

To be clear I'm not counting contract extensions. I'm talking about trades and UFA signings.

I think we see some BIG changes on defense, I think there is a deal with Calgary that will see either Tanev, Andersson Hanifin or perhaps Wegar land in Toronto, I acknowledge Wegar would be tough because of the money but Treliving brought him to Calgary that's his guy so it's possible.

I also wonder about Connor Murphy in Chicago.

In free agency I he targets Carson Soucy, and he should Soucy, Matt Dumba because he's targeted him before, or Brian Doumulin.

I think we see atleast 2 D men brought in.

Up front I wonder if he targets Alex Killorn, reason being is Treliving likes the gritty skilled forwards, case in point Blake Coleman.

I think Killorn has 3 years left in him.

The problem is I think he gets 5 years.

I could be convinced to go to 4 years knowing the last year is probably going to be rough.

I have to admit I wouldn't hate it.

I also wonder about Max Domi, Dubas didn't seem interested but Treliving might be.

He needs to replace ROR to so I wonder about J Staal or the health of Towes.

I think big changes are coming.

For those that want a retool, I think you will get it.
William Nylander extended for NOAH DOBSON8IBH

Sakic took longer, So did Ovechkin, MacKinnon, Eichel, Yzerman and many others.

Anyway.. it's summer. Maybe the grievances and anger can wait to see what actually happens this offseason?

Tavares is 32 and turning 33 in Sept and he makes a similar $11 mil salary as EK for the next 2 seasons and he is a PPG center at best at this stage.

Would I take a 33 year old Dman making $11 mil and putting up > 100 points instead of an aging slowing down centre making the same. Hell Yeah I would. :wg:

If the Leafs would be interested in a Karlsson then one of their $11 mil players would have to be moving out. However I don't believe Karlsson would all that interested in Toronto to waive his NTC for because of his former ties to Ottawa and dislike that happened in the past with the battle of Ontario.

I suspect Treliving is going to look for volume moves on Defense like recently bought out Oliver Ekman-Larsson from his days in Arizona, or Noah Hanifin from Flames. etc.
If you want to talk about swapping $11M players:

Tavares for Karlsson? Big yes.
Marner for Karlsson? Big no.

Marner is 26 making $10.9 mil X 2 more years and then looking for a nice raise.

Yesterday I suggested Clayton Keller from Arizona as a principle in trade for Marner. Keller is also and undersized winger but his just 24 and has 5 years remaining at $7.125 mil.

Last year Marner finished 12th overall in scoring .. 81 games 30 goals 69 assists 99 points (on one of the highest scoring teams 279 GF) vs Keller who finished 21st overall 82 games 37 goals 49 assists 86 points (on one of the lowest scoring teams 228 goals for). If you simply flipped those players and teams you expect those stats to also flip and Leafs could get just as much offense at a much lower price point.

Think of the cap savings alone $10.9 mil - $7.125 mil = $3.775 mil for the next 2 years and then much more after Marner's next contract kicks in.

Advantages: Matthews knows Keller, as they played together in the U.S. National Under-18 development team as does Shane Doan working in player development in Arizona with Keller.
If as you say Marner would produce about as much there as Keller does, ask yourself this question: why would Arizona make that trade? Just for the privilege of spending an extra $3.775M each of the next two years, and likely more after that?
