What's Treliving first deal going to be?

Don’t think a major overhaul of the D makes sense this year. Find an upgrade for Holl for sure but maybe that’s it. The UFA D market is way better next summer.

Brodie has been a rock. I’m not sure you’re finding a huge upgrade right now for his $5 million.

Gio struggled in the playoffs but IMO he was likely overworked in the regular season. He stepped up huge when half our D were injured. His contract is also tiny, might as well roll with him until the deadline and upgrade as needed.

Another year also gives you a better idea what you’ve got with Liljegren.

Next summer you’ve got guys like Hanifin, Toews, Zadorov, etc.

Toronto
Reilly Schenn
McCabe Liljegren
Brodie Timmins
Gio

Ideally a partner for Reilly would be ideal, and I do think OEL can do the job.

Most trades are, especially when centered around good players.

If the GM cant get a decent return for 3 huge assets thats a pretty big red flag.
The first thing to do is lock up Matthews and get the Cap back in line.

Say Matthews signs for 13 x 5-8. You don’t want to be paying Marner that much as well.
You have options to change it up.

Keller from Arizona, 86 points vs. 99 for 7 million x 5 years.

Kempe from LA, 40 goal scorer, 5.5 million x 3 years.

Adjust the cap, adjust the core. Then work on the D and depth with the savings.

Hanifin by all accounts is available now.

I think he's the guy Treliving is targeting

Maybe for Marner. I'm doubtful we'd get a good enough haul for Matthews with only one year left on his deal.
With some of the returns for trade deadline deals, I imagine we could get a pretty solid haul for Matthews even at the deadline.

I would have to think that if Tre were to trade Matthews to a team that AM might actually sign an extension with, the Leafs could get plenty for him.

Now imagine giving a team an elite player they have sole negotiating rights to for a full season. I would have to think that’s worth quite a bit, no?

Once he gets paid in 2 years, idiots here won't want him anyway.

I didn't know he was sick.

You usually "lose" a trade moving players of this caliber - any of those 3. But if the GM cant figure out how to get a solid return for a premium #1C thats an issue. You work with the teams and player to bump up the return

Gm of the year if he can fix the whole mrazek/Murray thing without paying assets.

Sometimes I'm doing nothing and then randomly my head will be like why did we get rid of mrazek just to add even worse mrazek who cost more.

Biggest problem with trying to trade Murray is the contract was not front loaded.

Murray is due $8 million in cash for 2023-24 season.
That is a lot of pesos for a meh goalie option with big question marks.

It’s an easy fix.
Best case scenario they trade him and get an asset.
Next best is to bring him to camp, LTIR him when he gets injured, bring him back mid season, when he gets injured LTIR again.
Worst case, he plays all year as Woll’s backup.

Next year is when 34 and 88's new contracts kick in. Doubt Leafs can afford 2.6m in dead cap space.

This, makes more sense to move him this off-season if the price is right. If it’s too steep, keep him and anticipate he’ll be on the LTIR for a significant part of the season. Use the cap space towards the deadline

That’s why you let ride this year or move him without giving up an asset.
Paying 5.5 for goaltending isn’t the end of the world considering Murray can play a little bit when he’s in.

Navigating the 3rd string will be a little tricky due to waivers, but I think its doable.

Risky but wonder if Sharks would do Karlsson @ 7 m for Brodie and Murray. Brodie and Murray owed 13.5m for one year. We get Karlsson for 4 years @ 7 m. Sharks save $16m. Maybe we can get more and pray Karlsson does not fall off a cliff. LOL.

Starting to think this will be what the Leafs do but with our luck he will be 100% healthy until game 82 when he suffers a concussion.

That’s OK even if they make the playoffs.

Do you think Karlsson has negative value?

He is coming off a season where he ended up outscoring any Maple Leaf player with 101 points finishing 11th overall (as a Dman)

The last 2 years of his deal he makes $9 mil and 7.5 mil in real dollars.
