In hindsight it’s what Dubas just did, to the Leafs. On a side note, I also dealt with the trades and this tactic is commonplace, it’s why you never take the lowest bid. The construction triangle is good, fast, and cheap. You can have any two corners, but not all three………..
Yup. Good, fast, and cheap. Pick 2.

How does it make no sense? It was based on the theory the poster I answered gave.

I’m essence it was a “so you mean like this?”
It makes no sense as it applies to Matthews.

I think it makes sense. He asks for a huge raise. If he gets he makes lots of money. If he doesn’t he decides where he wants to go next. Win win for Matthews.
He'll get a lot of money where ever he goes.
He's not going to spend years somewhere he doesn't want to be for a few dollars more when he can just get that money where he wants to be.

Well Shanny already endorsed the coach and told the core they're unlikely to be traded. So scratch any of that off. I'm no Dubas fan but I wouldn't want to work for Shanny either
Pretty much everything Dubas did apparently was with Shanahan’s blessing, he hired the GM, both should hVe been canned, but it doesn’t work that way in Toronto, as a fan you have to die a death of a thousand cuts……….

Which is what Gaudreau did in Calgary - if Tre lets Matty or Nylander walk him to July 1st with out a contract extension, after going through what he went through with Johnny, that IMO disqualifies Tre from being our GM.

Pretty simple, if I was in Tre's position, I'm working the phones to find out what I can get for Matty and Willie, I make sure that somehow it leaks that I'm shopping them, I tell them they have till June 29th to come to a mutually agreeable contract extension or I will have to move forward WITHOUT THEM.

For the record Willie Nylander's agent is the very same agent who represents Johnny Gaudreau, the very same agent who let Tre to believe that Johnny wanted to resign in Calgary...until he didn't.

Fool me once...
Agreed, probably fielding offers on all the Amigos as we speak...2 werks to go...gonna be wild...

At least, once this plays out, we will know whether those contracts were solely on Dubas (very doubtful), or on Shanny AND MLSE. I have really began to think it's on the latter.
Im not following...it wasnt Shanny who was saying we can and we will or telling Nylander that he wouldnt be traded as long as he was the gm. Why is it every bad move Dubas made is on Shanny but every good move was all him?

I was never in favour of Dubas, too smug for my liking. I’m hoping that Shanny is trying to swing a trade of one of the core to try and balance this team out better. But, if no changes are made (and I totally get Tre possibly keeping Keefe to start the season, and firing him later on) and we see the same results, then it definitely leads one to wonder.

Ask yourself does LV or Fla have any elite players that resemble our top 4? Is there one player in our top 5 that pressures the puck the way LV or Fla does? Is there a soft elite scoring winger on LV/Fla? A soft elite scoring center on LV/Fla? We got two of each. They have zero of each. Tkachuk had a cracked sternum and still played 2 periods, his brother had to help him out of bed before the game. Would Willie, JT, Marner or Matty have the same insane drive to win?

It's not the skill level that is the problem here, its the drive to not lose. You have to hate to lose more than you love to win, if you want to be a champion. I've coached for well over 4 decades, I've had championship teams and I've had bottom dwellers. The difference between the two in every case, on the championship teams I have a handful of guys who hate to lose and will drag the rest of the team into their fight. Every team that I've coached has had really talented, athletic players, not every team had that group of competitors that hates to lose. There is an abnormal focus that those guys have that is hard to explain, you know it when you see it.

Now ask yourself what should Tre's focus be?
Until they come out with a stat like xDLL (Doesn't Like Losing) the propeller heads will waive off your claim like you're a fortune teller. I agree with you in that we don't have anyone that hates to lose...shit...they won't even admit they didn't play well let alone hate to lose. This group...and a group it is ...not a team ...won't do shit until a couple of difference makers drag the rest of them into the fight. The key has to be difference makers...not some 4th line plug that hits...it has to come from the top or near the top of the lineup and trickle down.

It's too bad Treliving is nothing more than a sock puppet with Shanahan's hand doing the manoeuvring.

Because otherwise it should be a priority for Treliving to move away from the four forward experiment that defined his predecessor's tenure towards a more conventional build.

Instead of trying to prove some nerd theorems on roster construction. At the expense of even more contention years in the prime of the stars. One thing is for sure, if they continue the way they are there will only be more losing.

They haven't won a damn thing yet with these guys.

That's not gonna change any time soon. Treliving could trade any one of the so-called core four. Replace them with cap dumps and waiver bait. The results might actually be better.

Those guys would try.

In any deal for Matthews, you wont win but at least you might get some players that will help you stay competitive for a few years. There is always free agency and usually a 30 to 40 guy out there.

I hope that Tre's plan is to get bigger and faster and hopefully keep any 2 of Matty, Nylander and/or Marner. We can resign Jt in a few years at 3 or 4 mil a year.

I can live with that. Also once the other 2 see he's dealt they may (?) Be more reasonable...If Gretzky can be traded anyone can...I want players that want to be here and play for the team..

The Colorado Avalanche won the the Lindros trade. The Calgary Flames won the Joe Nieuwendyk trade (okay both teams won this trade). It's not easy but you need a trading partner with the right talent.

You can’t be paying Marner as much as your franchise center.
Nylander’s next contract is where I would have preferred Marner to be.
If Matthews was making 12 x 8 and Marner was making 9.5 x 8, different story. But a possible both at 13+?

Marner is the one that needs to move and you sign Nylander for just under 10.
Added to Matthews you have your Center, you have your forward in Nylander who can play either wing. That’s your big money up front.

All correct but as many Joe for Iggy trades, there are 15 Tkachuk for Hubredeau trades. It's very rare you trade an elite player and it becomes a win for both sides. Raycroft for Rask? UGH!
