Matthew Knies --- Auston Matthews -- Josh Doan

The fearsome Phoenix threesome. :)

Shane Doan approves of this message,
It has the makings to be one heck of a line if Knies and Doan live up to their expectations.

Shane Doan's son Josh was drafted 20 spots earlier than our own Matthew Knies, so the future potential is certainly there for these 2 kids who are also close friends and grew up together.

With all the former connections between Shane Doan and Brad Treliving and Arizona in the past you would have to think new GM and Assistant are looking at their former roots for Leafs future moves. :)

Chris Johnston thinks there’s no way Matthews signs long term, but still gets overpaid again. He didn’t live up to his second contract so why over pay him again.

There’s no truth to the idea he didn’t live up to his contract.

Yeah we all know it's 3-6 years.
Probably 3 and then he’ll run it again about the time they’re
they might be in a position to go for it.

In hindsight the four first round picks might have been better than what he was able to produce as an overpaid player, or they could have matched and saved cap space.

Takes two to tangle. Agents are not dumb and players will always try to get the best contract they can. Especially in their prime.

It’s all about getting the most REAL money they can get. Happens in every sport.

If our GM gets them for 3,5 or a 8 year deal it will be because the player wanted it. They won’t make the player sit out.

Sure there is a deal to be had with Marner to Arizona for Keller/Doan/D/pick/etc.
Matthews won’t go to Arizona, but Arizona can come to Matthews.

Exactly. If Auston wants a 3 or 5 year deal to try and maximize his earnings then he has every right to do so. What are we gonna do, beg him to take a 1 mil discount so we can overpay some garbage UFA?

Shanny begging did not work the last time. The idea is he takes a discount so they can surround him with "better" players, not garbage UFAs. How much draft capital have the Leafs paid teams to retain at the TDL in order to bring in help?? Seems to me, if you ask for the moon, be prepared to deliver when it counts.

Not once, not twice, but three times Dubas could have filled that 1RHD position.

If Treliving wants to really put his stamp on the team he should do something Dubas failed to do three times in his short caterer here: fill that 1RHD position properly.

Even if it means trading Nylander or Marner.

Dubas promised Nylander not to trade him. Treliving is under no such obligation. Who does that anyway?

Who gives a guy a verbal promise he won't get traded and then actually keeps the promise?

The defense is still shaky with more guys on the wrong side of thirty than not, and an offensive defenseman that struggles in their own end as the team's top defender.

Rangers have a lot of good defensemen, and Jacob Trouba is a player I could see being moved.

If Treliving had any guts he would find a way to bring Trouba over to the Leafs.

Finally fill that #1RHD position properly.

Something Dubas willfully choose not to do three times in his short career.
Considering that 1RHDs are hard to come by and usually expensive, I don't blame him too much for not getting one.

I do blame him for signing Tavares to that terrible contract, and for overpaying Matthews, Marner and (to a lesser extent) Nylander, and for wasting a lot of draft picks; all of which handicapped him in trying to get that 1RHD.

Definitely needs to go if he thinks he’s entitled to a big raise, hell I’d argue he hasn’t lived up to his current contract. Sometimes it’s better to get out while you still can……..
So true...

To be clear I'm not counting contract extensions. I'm talking about trades and UFA signings.

I think we see some BIG changes on defense, I think there is a deal with Calgary that will see either Tanev, Andersson Hanifin or perhaps Wegar land in Toronto, I acknowledge Wegar would be tough because of the money but Treliving brought him to Calgary that's his guy so it's possible.

I also wonder about Connor Murphy in Chicago.

In free agency I he targets Carson Soucy, and he should Soucy, Matt Dumba because he's targeted him before, or Brian Doumulin.

I think we see atleast 2 D men brought in.

Up front I wonder if he targets Alex Killorn, reason being is Treliving likes the gritty skilled forwards, case in point Blake Coleman.

I think Killorn has 3 years left in him.

The problem is I think he gets 5 years.

I could be convinced to go to 4 years knowing the last year is probably going to be rough.

I have to admit I wouldn't hate it.

I also wonder about Max Domi, Dubas didn't seem interested but Treliving might be.

He needs to replace ROR to so I wonder about J Staal or the health of Towes.

I think big changes are coming.

For those that want a retool, I think you will get it.
Treliving first move.a news conference telling us how shanahan showed him how this core 4 is the ultimate

Show me that

My bet is prospect and a 1st for hanafin

Sign him for 8 x 6.25
Pretty significant move. Good offensive numbers while starting in the dzone almost 50%. Strapping lad who makes the D better. Would do that deal.
