Less than everyone thinks.

Goalies don't return the same amount as other top players in their positions.

OK, I realize some of the Oiler poster offers were weak but in what world would you trade a player like McDavid for 2 years of Carey Price? ... and I think Price is the best goalie in the game. If Price were signed for 6 more years then were talking a much different scenario.

He said realistically. Price would never be moved without gross overpayment.

lol so much bs here. Price gets a lot more than Tavares.
Price = Murray u say?? Lol thats like saying Galchenyuk has similar value to Ovechkin based on age and cap hit :laugh:
Schneider was traded as a backup (Van). Price is the best goalie in the world and yeah hes a starter if u werent aware. Montreal will extend their generational talent on a max contract. 10-12M AAV, 8 years.
Price is worth hell lot more than Pulji, Draistil, and a first, which will very likely be a late rounder.

You can't just ignore current contract when discussing a player's value. Do you really think Price can garner a king's ransom with only 2 seasons left until UFA?

If he demands a trade I'd target a younger goalie with elite potential

Maybe a guy like John Gibson

For Anaheim I'd want Gibson, Ritchie and Theodore

Price makes them instant contenders and odds on favorites to win.

They still had Damphousse as the 1C.

While Roy was the most important player on that team, it doesnt get done without a top line center like Damphousse who put up 23 pts in 20 playoff games

And who was their elite D-man?

In realistic world, a team trading for Carey Price is probably gunning deep in the playoffs, so trading a #1D or C aren't realistic. They'd have to empty the farm though.

So for example:

From ANA

John Gibson
Cam Fowler
Nick Ritchie
2017 1st
2018 1st

That's a young starter, a young top 4 D to free up some cap space, an up and coming middle 6 young forward, two late 1sts.

Let's say one GM has gone mad and wants to trade the farm for Carey Price. what would he offer?

If Marc Bergevin is crazy enough to trade him what would be his demand?

It would take making the Canadiens believe that they would become a better team by making the trade, simple. The hard part is finding a team that would be willing to give up that much for a goaltender and that thinks the deal also makes them better.

Determining value on a superstar is always difficult, how many times have we seen on HF that the value of someone is outrageous and they'll only be traded if the deal is totally lopsided and than that player is traded for a second round pick and a B prospect?

That said, a realistic value for price would be a good starter, or a highly touted goalie prospect, a good top 6 forward, OR top 4 defenceman, along with a good prospect or a first. That's without a new contract, if he had 4 years left instead of two maybe the price is higher.

Price doesnt get you Tavares. Goalies dont have that kind of value. You are dreaming when you want Vlasic and Couture+ for Price etc. Never gonna happen.
Price only has two years left and goalies dont have that value. He will also get a huge contracts which will lower his value aswell.
Ovechkin is locked up longterm, Price isnt. Murray is RFA for many more years, price ufa in 2 seasons.
Schneider wasnt the backup in Vancouver because he wasnt good enough to be #1. He was backup because Luongo was their aswell. He was a damn good goalie for Vancouver before he got traded to NJ.
Price doesnt get you Pulju, Draisaitl and a first without an extension signed. And why would he sign an extension if he is gonna be traded?
You are extremely far off when you think Price gets you guys like Tavares, Ovechkin, Ekblad+Barkov? Not even close. Never gonna happen. Goalies dont get you that kind of players specially when he is a ufa in 2 seasons.

People need to stop using the "Goalie's don't have as much value" philosophy when talking about Price. It does not apply in this scenario. This is a goalie who is regarded very highly by managements and coaches as being not only the best goalie in the world, but arguably the best player.

Tavares+ is an insane valuation, and I'm not one of those people that goes around here saying, "Goalies don't have any value."

And who was their elite D-man?

I was never the one who said you need an elite dman.

I said you definitely cant win without one of an elite 1C and/or norris caliber dman

Then I revised my statement to say that it appears a top tier 1C is ALWAYS a need

If Price is traded, he will not return guys like Tavares, Giroux, Ekblad, etc... not because the value is off but because what is the point of getting rid of your star forward and getting a star goalie?

A young goalie/goalie prospect + young top 6 forward/top 4 D + top prospect + 1st is the base for a deal.

Salary cap not taken into account:

From Anaheim: John Gibson + Cam Fowler + Stefan Noesen + 1st

From Edmonton: Cam Talbot + Jordan Eberle + Darnell Nurse + 1st

From Pittsburgh: Matt Murray + Carl Hagelin + Derrick Pouliot + 1st

From Dallas: Phillipe Desrosiers + Cody Eakin + Dennis Guryanov + 1st (maybe Dallas adds a little more or takes on some cap)

From Philly: Steve Mason + Travis Sanheim + German Rubstov + 1st

No team guts their current lineup and will be helped to be put over the top with Price.

The bs seems to be in your post. Price for Tavares is probably fair, but to think Price would get more than Tavares is just nuts.
As for Pulj, Drais, and a 1st, that's too much for Price, but who knows, Edm might be crazy enough to table such an offer.

If you were to see a stupid overpayment for Price it would be from the Oilers. Other than that the only realistic trades for Price would have another top 5 goalie coming back, but trading for Price makes no sense for teams like TB, NJ, or WASH.

Without an extension this if probably fair. IF he was signed a year or two longer i think he could fetch atleast a better young defensemen. But as you said no team will send MTL their star player for Price. Will never happen.
